I said there was NO universe where I wouldn't recommend this game after playing the demo. I have now beaten the full game. Turns out I somehow undersold the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing. Sprawl Zero is an absolute adrenaline pump of a game. Bhopping had basically replaced walking or running as my primary means of locomotion and every encounter became an excuse to launch myself around the room at Mach 2 with every gun I could get my hands on to see how stylish I can finish the arena. And the guns. With a couple exceptions, damn near EVERYTHING you pick up feels fantastic to use. Combined with the randomized weapon crates, you're constantly being handed new excuses to cause problems instead of settling into one comfortable loadout for the entire game. There are 40 guns in total in the game as of now and it's your job to make it everyone's problem!!! The soundtrack deserves special mention because HOLY ♥♥♥♥. There were stretches where I genuinely had to stop and take things slow because of the goosebumps through encounters. It doesn't merely accompany the action; it makes you want to play even more aggressively just to keep up with it. The Sprawl itself is still one of my favorite parts. It's filthy, oppressive and absolutely dripping with atmosphere. I said in my demo review that you could practically choke on the air, and after seeing the whole thing, I stand by that, except there's now moisture in the rain as well next to the uranium particles. Most importantly, though, Sprawl Zero understands something I desperately miss in games: moving around and shooting things can just be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FUN. It gives you the tools, lets you find your own rhythm, and then throws enough chaos at you to see what you'll do with them. I went into the demo joking that this felt like the kind of mythical “HALO KILLER” you'd read about in a gaming magazine 15 years ago and assume couldn't possibly live up to the hype. Having finished it? Yeah. It ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lived up to the hype. I've got a New Game+ and numerous challenges to attend to now......... 9.5/10 demo. 10/10 full game. GO PLAY SPRAWL ZERO!!!!!!!!!!
The best modern indie linear FPS in my opinion. It takes every single best part of my favorite console shooters, puts in just enough new features to keep it fresh, and does it's own thing entirely in terms of story, presentation, and feel to make sure you feel like you're playing a game from 2006. Right down to the performance, file size, music, textures, and voice acting. It's extremely high quality all around and knows exactly how to do what it wants to do. How did this happen with just 4 developers, console ports, UE5, and a single year of development time? Pure magic. Pure skill. Good god. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥'s everything I've ever wanted. It's everything I've ever needed. And all I want is more.
Had a chance to play through the first 2 missions of the game, and overall, SPRAWL feels like a lovechild of the games from the early 2000s. Back when you could play through a game while listening to an amazing soundtrack blasting some sick tunes, punching a nameless grunt in the face, and freaking out over the game's physics. If you love Killzone, FEAR, Half-Life 2, Haze, etc., you'll find yourself right at home with this game. It flows really well and feels like it takes the best aspects of games from the early 2000s, while adding just enough modern touches to really make the game feel special. The combat mostly revolves around picking up new weapons using your gravity gloves, which pretty much feel like the gravity gun from Half-Life 2, as the game is heavily physics-based. You'll constantly be juggling different guns, which all have a rarity system assigned to them. You can find chests containing random guns, and you'll be constantly cycling through them as you push through each level and deal with whatever enemies the game throws at you. You also have finite ammo and have lost the ability to reload, which means your character most likely takes great joy in throwing inanimate objects directly at enemies' heads. Gunplay feels really smooth and solid. You'll be popping heads and throwing bits of debris at enemies while juggling your abilities and ammo. It feels really fast, and the aiming is extremely snappy, allowing you to feel like a complete badass as you throw a cigarette at an enemy's head before following it up with a charged-up power punch. Graphics and level design are pretty much par for the course. You'll be exploring a variety of unique locations, with secrets scattered around for you to discover and find. The graphics are fairly standard, but they definitely fit the vibe and overall feel that the game is going for. If you enjoy the classic feeling of the early 2000s and wish you could capture that feeling again (why can't we bring back the early 2000s economy as well?), you'll find yourself right at home with SPRAWL. I'm not exactly sure how long the game is, but even after playing it for less than an hour, I can already tell that this game has the potential to be a classic for years to come. It has all the fundamentals of a really solid shooter, and it manages to feel like a classic game from the early 2000s while pushing the FPS genre in a new direction at the same time.
