When exploring and discussing games, comparison is inevitable. The phrase “Like Skyrim with guns” has done irreparable damage to the lowest common denominator of gaming discourse. That’s not to say that comparison isn’t a useful tool in criticism and conversation about games, just that comparison alone is both a narrow and shallow lens through which to view any work of art. Trepang² is one of the most “compared to” games I’ve ever seen. Its major inspirations are clear as day: 2005’s monolithic FPS F.E.A.R. and the community-driven horror megafiction of the SCP Foundation Archives are two of the most obvious. Now, if you wanted to be reductive on the internet for fun, you could say that Trepang² is “F.E.A.R. meets SCP”, walk away from the game after rolling credits, and never think about it again. 7/10. Nicely done. However… Trepang² is sneaky. Beneath the surface level comparisons to its inspirations, this game is hiding something. From its core combat loop to its most basic storytelling components, Trepang² is begging you to think that it’s mid. I’m here to tell you it’s not. The core combat, when compared to F.E.A.R.’s slow-mo gunkata, is much more frantic and fast-paced. Point Man plays a bit slower, more methodical, with more emphasis placed on quick bursts of slow-mo action. The guy can’t even sprint. In comparison, Trepang²’s Subject 106 explodes with kinetic energy. Sprints into slides into drop kicks. Pinballing down office corridors and turning scores nondescript PMC’s into strawberry pulp connects more closely with the unique power fantasy of Trepang²; Point Man is a professional, Subject 106 is a people blender. Trepang²’s cloak ability completes the game’s core combat loop. When you’re screaming down hallways, you’re prone to leave yourself overexposed. On higher difficulties, even half a second of being vulnerable is more than enough time to die. The cloak gives you that moment to reset; find some cover, an angle they aren’t watching, and get ready for another dive. It’s a “get out of jail free” card if used correctly, which is why enemies come equipped with flares to flush you out of cloak. In contrast, F.E.A.R. is a game of calculated, careful plays in tight spaces meant to expose flanks and punish mistakes. Unlike F.E.A.R., Trepang² wants you to make bold, possibly disastrous plays, which connects nicely to Subject 106 as a character and the overall frenzied tone of the game. Every element of Trepang²’s combat connects neatly to both its power fantasy and its overall vibe. Holding a guy hostage before sending him sailing through the air, live grenade attached, is a little dumb and hokey and explosively violent, but Trepang² is not trying to be the self serious, tacticool Point Man unofficial sequel. It’s trying to be Trepang²: visceral, kinetic, and more than a little unhinged. One of the most underappreciated elements of Trepang² is its worldbuilding and storytelling. For a game that pulls you along from one bloodbath to another at a breakneck pace, its more interesting bits of storytelling are surprisingly understated and easy to miss. If you slow down and actually look at the places you’re exploring, read the intel logs (god forbid gamers read) there’s good stuff in here. The Syndicate, the organization you’ve been fighting for the whole time, has been hunting krakens to extinction since the mid-19th century? Horizon was using The Mothman to make experimental drugs? It’s the kind of lore that sticks in your memory, if only to wonder about the implications. Unanswered mysteries that leave just enough to get you excited. Good stuff. As is often said, comparison is the thief of joy. Games are a hodgepodge of inspiration, creative liberty, and unintended consequences. Trepang² takes heavy inspiration from other games and works of fiction, but that doesn’t mean Trepang² is “F.E.A.R. meets SCP”. From the barest of combat essentials to the minutiae of its story, this game is a great example of innovating on your inspirations rather than being held back by them. Despite what some will say, Trepang² would not be a better game if it was more like F.E.A.R.; we already have that game, and it rocks. Trepang² is a wild animal of its own, unchained and released upon the world, mincing flesh and shredding kevlar into ribbons. It’s the kind of game that gives me hope for the future of videogames, a future where games are made by people who played something that set their souls on fire. Inspiration is a cycle, one that I hope propels this team and others into Trepang³ and beyond.

a lot of people criticize this game for being a weird, tonally dissonant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mishmash of fear, the scp mythos and random internet creepypasta stuff. i completely agree except i think that makes it awesome

F.e.a.r. on roids. Super smooth gameplay, no hiccups or fps drops. Using UE4, no terrible UE5 isues. That makes me happy. Just buy it if you loved FEAR and it's copycats from way back in the day.
