The game is a lot easier and on-the-rails than it's predecessor Staffer Case. It's a source of disappointment for me because even though you need to pull miracles before, it's part of the charm that made me fall in love with the series. However, what the sequel lost in difficulty it made up with it's very engaging setting and drama. It's been a pleasure to go through all the cases and I can't wait for the sequel. Case 3 is the best, Case 5's mystery was meh.

Staffer Retro is the long-awaited sequel to Staffer Case and the second game in the trilogy. I just finished the game and have a lot of thoughts on this entry. I read the reviews from the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean community while gathering my thoughts and there are certainly points of agreement and disagreement. Let's dive right into it. First off, the overall quality of presentation has seen a significant upgrade compared to Staffer Case. The overall "feel" of the interface and game feels very satisfying and I'm proud of Team Tetrapod for the leap in quality. The voice acting is solid, there are some strong visual elements at play (I really like the cutscenes we see throughout), and the music is good, although I do think some tracks are a bit overused. I think the structure of the game definitely feels different compared to Staffer Case. As others have pointed out, the back half of Staffer Retro feels less mystery oriented and more of an overall narrative the game wishes to tell. I personally didn't mind this because I was so invested at this point in the story Retro was telling as well as the overall narrative of the series. But I understand why players and fans who are here for the mysteries first may feel underwhelmed by that decision. My favorite cases are Case 3 and the Epilogue, which should be no surprise to readers. I do think they represent the strongest points of the game, Case 3 being the best mystery, and the Epilogue being overall very satisfying in its story telling and narrative. I think the heroine, Verita, is a well written and compelling character. I really sympathized and rooted for her throughout, and seeing her growth is satisfying. I generally like the other characters we see throughout, Votan being a standout favorite. It was really neat seeing events unfold from her perspective from time to time. *SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED** The relationship between Verita and Vering is something that has been consistently mentioned as a polarizing point among the discussions of this game that I've seen. A lot of players interpreted it romantically which didn't quite sit right with me considering the age dynamic between the two. Personally, to me, the connection felt more nuanced, a relationship that is important emotionally but doesn't necessarily need to be labeled as romance. To make a comparison point, I would invoke Phoenix and Maya from the Ace Attorney series. I love these two characters dearly, and while all AA fans have their own head canons and pairings they enjoy, to me, the relationship is about a deeply emotional core, where they are very important to one another. Being each other's rock, overcoming trauma and conflict together. This is something that is deeper and cannot be so easily defined. In the same way, I see Verita and Vering's relationship as an emotional bond between two deeply hurt and flawed individuals. And in that framing, I did personally find the narrative emotionally compelling. Some points of critique I do have with Retro: I feel like some focal points are not satisfactorily concluded. The theme of Verita's family is very important within the narrative. But I don't feel as if I fully understood what happened. Whether this was intentional is unknown to me, but the game reveals that Verita was responsible for selling her mother away. She feels guilty about it afterwards and we know that her mom hated her but the whole family situation is just not fully explored which frustrates me. We didn't really get to see much regarding Verita's mom killing her dad either, the aftermath or how it really affects Verita. We see a few flashbacks of her seeing it, but it feels like it was more for shock value rather than a well thought out narrative decision or useful characterization. Ultimately, the game presents Verita's family trauma as central to understanding her character, but the trauma is not fully explained or explored, which causes dissonance to the player's experience (or at least, it did for me). Compared to Staffer Case, which I felt had a strong and satisfactory ending despite having unresolved threads, I think Retro definitely has more unresolved questions. Besides the family point that I mentioned, the biggest point is definitely the memory box which I thought would be addressed before the game ended. I'm a little concerned on how the third game can resolve every thread in a conclusive and satisfactory manner, but there's nothing to be done on that point until the final game is out. While certainly some unresolved threads are fine in the second game of a trilogy, I just hope the team can land the ending. That's all I can hope for at the end of the day. While we are in the spoiler section, seeing the return of Redfins and Bryan was awesome. I love what the game did with these characters. I was very sad to not see Notrick present in a more concrete fashion or interact with the other David. While Retro is not a perfect game and leaves me with several questions, I genuinely was enthralled by the game. It's not easy for me to finish a piece of media so quickly but I was greatly compelled by the work to devour what it was presenting to me. I am definitely a fan of the Staffer series and am proud of how far Team Tetrapod has come. As a Korean American fan of Ace Attorney and other mystery works, I definitely feel a unique point of view getting to experience this work. I hope Team Tetrapod's efforts and their works can become more well known among mystery game fans and reach a wider audience among video game fans in general. I am greatly looking forward to the third and final Staffer entry, and I really hope to see a happy but more importantly, narratively satisfying and conclusive ending for this series I have come to love.

Simply put, the game is amazing. It certainly is unique compared to its predecessor staffer case, focused more on interpreting maps and timelines akin to an escape room rather than more ace attorney-esque interrogation style murder mystery. The twists are certainly pleasant I find Case 3 among one of my favorites in the series. One caveat though that should be mentioned is that if you played the demo, you would need to replay the first case all over again. Unlike the first game where you would merely need to answer a quiz on the true culprit of Case 1, the game needs to read save data on if you got the true ending, so that is a little frustrating. Otherwise, worth buying, just make sure to be wary of what I mentioned above.

Looking back, I really liked the first game, Staffer Case , and my expectations were pretty high coming into this one. It didn't have the most innovative tricks, but the overall story was well paced and showed that the writers planned ahead to have everything pieced together. While I think Staffer Retro is a good game, I unfortunately don't think it's paced as well as its predecessor, and worse, it doesn't feel as well thought out when it comes to its overarching plot. Case had five chapters, and 4 and 5 were the best, leading to a climactic finale. Retro also has five chapters, but I think 3 is far and away the best, with a lull in terms of story progression at Chapter 4 that kills the pacing. The writing also just seems a little sloppier in the back half, to the point it honestly feels like there were some time/budget constraints that came into play. The ending also didn't tie up as many of the loose ends as I wish it would: where the original answered the big questions and left an open-ended "What will we do next to solve this conundrum?", this game rather ends without direction for the player's curiosity. Still, the characters are wonderful and Chapter 3 is to die for, so I'd recommend anyone who enjoyed the first game to also play this one. The visuals are also a huge upgrade, and I think the voice acting for the main duo especially was a ton of fun to listen to. Not as great as Case imo, but still a good game on its own merits!

I realized this after playing the demo, but it's important to emphasize that this game is quite different from Staffer Case. Rather than solving mysteries as the goal, it's more focused on the adventure narrative, and at the end of the arc you'll find out a simple mystery was occurring in the background in a breezy 10-15 minute resolution. Honestly, I might have rather not had the mystery element at all if it was gonna be treated so superfluously. Act 3 however, is a very strong exception to the rule, as I enjoyed it's mystery quite a bit. Act 4 and onward, I don't think there was a single plot twist I didn't see coming from a mile away, which was incredibly disappointing. The latter half of the game feels like one long arc, which kind of killed the pacing for me and made it feel like less things happened in this game than Case, despite being a little bit longer. Additionally, the "Retro" gimmick, which I was really excited to see utilized more in the latter half of the game, really fell off in terms of importance. Lastly, despite having much, much more melodrama than Case, I was not moved nearly as much by anything in this as I was by the ending in that game. All that said, the passion of this team still bleeds though tremendously, the worldbuilding is still top tier. Despite lacking as cohesive of a ensemble cast, the characters are still great, if not better than Case. It's generally a lot more comedic, but still contains the darker elements the series touches on at times. I liked the music more, although some tracks should have been used more sparingly I think. Despite potentially being a bit of an awkward middle child, my excitement for this series has not been dwindled in the slightest, I greatly look forward to the final entry in the trilogy, and I hope the team takes all the time they need to make sure it's perfect.
