There is a reason when Steam promotes a "May the 4th" sale, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 are at the top of the list. They are classics that should be experienced by you, gamer. Two choice saturated games that run on "real-time" turn based combat. Dated in numerous ways, yet each with golden cores that make it absolutely worth digging through the calcified crust of age. Be wary, this game runs off of a 3.x D&D Star Wars system, which can add a lot of "game knowledge" overhead that some of us absolute degenerates live to ingest and process. If you are not a dyed-in-the-wool TTRPG nerd and for some reason dislike having 30+ feats to choose through, don't fret too much. KotoR1 & 2 are not especially difficult games, especially because they rewards power for combat through exploration and roleplaying. The stuff you'll be doing the other 2/3rds of the time, besides combat. The recommended build paths in game are... o-kay, so auto-leveling and equipping bigger numbers will see you through normal difficulty. Alternatively, you can destroy the game. Breaking open the carapace, then spine of 3.x numbers bloat to become a living God. Laughing condescendingly as you dissolve the game's final boss in a tide of Force Lightnings. Both games are thoughtful examinations of the Star Wars universe. To me, that's the main appeal. If you've watched a Star Wars film and wished for more substantive exploration of the themes, KotoR 1 is here for you. There is war, there is philosophy, there is pazaak. You will experience the highs and lows of force-hood and a great hero's journey. With KotoR 2 DOWNLOAD THE MOD THAT IMPLEMENTS VAST QUANTITIES OF CUT CONTENT. The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification (TSLRCM) is a 15-year in the making restoration. Today, it is available in the steam workshop as a one button fix. KotoR 2 is the interesting deconstruction of Star Wars, period. An examination of the jedi, their sibling sith, and how the galaxy contorts around these powers into twisted paradigms. A uniquely bitter experience, like hot coffee. Deeply satisfying and wakening. I wrote this review once and applied it to both games.

This is the most frustrating game I've ever played and that's because it hates modern hardware. First I booted the game and everything was stuck in 800x600 and I couldn't go to windowed mode. Okay cool, found out there's a patcher so I installed that and replaced my .exe and now I can play in 1920x1080 windowed, awesome! Then I make my character, get into combat, and as soon as it ends I can't move my character. Do some searching, find out any framerate above 72FPS causes your traversal script to break. Okay, download rivatuner and set the FPS cap to 72FPS. Awesome, seems to be going great, I play for 6 hours straight with no issues and beat Taris. Oh no, in the undercity there's black textures streaking across my screen and preventing progress. Okay, let's google, oh apparently having grass of all things enabled causes the bug. Disabled grass, all works fine. Get to the Ebon Hawk. Pause and save my game, I'll play tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, try loading my game from the main menu, every single save crashes on load. Search around, the only fix is to delete everything in the "currentgame" and "futuregame" folders, start a new game then load your game from the in-game pause menu. I do that, and it works, but now I have to do that every single time I play the game because the fix for disabling pause buffer and soft shadows doesn't work on it. Now I'm on Kashyyyk and loading into exteriors crashes the game, look online, you need to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. Do that, works fine now. Waiting on the next inevitable issue. And another issue cropped up a day later, I quicksaved and the game crashed at the same time, corrupting my quicksave entirely. Fortunately, I had a manual save from 20 mins before, but man that took the wind out of my sails. Another thing that likes to happen is sometimes your ally and player AI breaks: you can start a fight, but your two companions stand still and are locked onto the enemies but wont do anything. You can solve this with quicksaving then quickloading, but it got me killed a few times. I feel like I've worked 4 hours doing tech support just to play this thing but I loved this game. I beat it on the Xbox years ago but only remember the plot twist. Despite my headaches, I do recommend this game, but be prepared for some major headaches ironing out all the compatibility issues you'll face. Even if you're not a Star Wars fan, which I don't consider myself either, this game as an RPG is one of the best and you can see a lot of the DNA that carried over into Mass Effect. All in all, if we judged this game as a product of its time, it's easily a 10/10 and likely worked out of the box back then. Judging it by modern hardware standards, it's an 8/10 due to the tedium of getting everything to cooperate, but once it does, you get one of the best Star Wars games and RPGs ever made. I never felt restricted to one path, I played light at first, then I turned to the Dark Side on Korribaan but the game allowed me to redeem myself which I chose to do after Juhani gave me a speaking to. That kind of flexibility is absent in a lot of modern games, even BioWare's own. KotoR really lives up to its reputation of being one of the best games ever made. I hope Steam gives it the same treatment KotoR 2 got so it works better for future players.

When I played this game in 2003 it was one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. 20 years later I still remember the story like it was yesterday. Clearly the game is very old now, but Kotor 1 and 2 are top 5 Star Wars game ever made. No need to say anything else.

More than 20 years have passed since its initial release yet the critically acclaimed Star Wars: KOTOR remains one of the best Star Wars games ever made. With Bioware at the helm, already veterans of several previous RPG's, KOTOR is a role-playing game with a turn based combat system. Set 4000 years before the events of the movies, after the conclusion of the Mandalorian War, the Sith and Jedi are embroiled in conflict. We begin as a lowly soldier, with no memory of previous events, but one who we soon discover has force potential. Not only is this an exceptional story, one that could have easily made one of the greatest Star Wars films, but the freedom of choice truly augments the essence of this tale with incredible twists and turns. Choices matter and will shape the direction that the story unfolds as well as influence the fate of the galaxy. Players can choose to follow the light or dark paths, which heavily determines relationships with our companions and even our appearance. Said companions come from varied backgrounds but hold many attributes of classic Star Wars characters. Most of them are distinct and quite memorable. The various worlds, likewise, are unique in setting and feature their own challenges and quests. The music flawlessly captures the Star Wars feel, with sweeping orchestral themes. The voice acting is solid as well. Although impressive at launch, the graphics are now quite dated and animations can seem stiff. For those that enjoy RPG's and/or Star Wars, as well as anyone who enjoys narrative driven games, KOTOR is a must-play. It remains a classic, and one that has been influential in future games of its genre.

Kids, let me tell you a story about a game company made up of passionate gamers called BIOWARE, that once, were not EA slaves, and used to make artistic masterpieces. This game is one of those. A must play for any self-respecting rpg enjoyer. There are also mods out there - graphics, gameplay enchantments, widescreen fixes and more. KotOR is still kicking strong. Get it! Play it! Profit!
