I remember this game being awesome when it came out. Used my flight stick and throttle for the entire story~ I highly recommend playing this with controller and even more so with flight stick. Now for all of you who bought this and it doesnt launch!!!! i have something for you! !!!(USE AT YOUR OWN RISK as you are messing with cpu cores)!!! each of these should be pasted into LAUNCH OPTIONS Copy the inside of the parenthesis ( cmd /c start "" /affinity FF /wait %command% ) This one is 8 cores [as far as i know this one sucks for vr] ( cmd /c start "" /affinity FFF /wait %command% ) This is 12 ( cmd /c start "" /affinity FFFF /wait %command% ) This is 16 I have not tested 12 and 16 cores with vr but hopefully that helps the game run better in vr~ all of these launch the game btw I also have the game and the launcher set to admin.
The story and characters were compelling enough keep it interesting, and it was great to experience the story from both perspectives. Being able to fly (especially in VR) the iconic Star Wars space craft is a wonderful experience. There's a bit of depth and complexity to the craft, but it was easy to learn and hard to master. The game offered some difficulty but was forgiving enough (Pilot mode) to where it was not necessary to be an expert in all aspects. That was good because I played the game off and on so I would forget the controls. The most difficult parts were getting under the shields of the large craft to take out their shield generators, so after dying repeatedly I did turn down the difficulty on two stages. To be fair the one stage had a bug: it offered the ability to heal/change your ship in the hangar then return to the mission, but due to a bug once I returned to the mission my screen was black until I restarted the game... I find bugs and annoyances are to be expected in EA products. Overall, the single player was an awesome experience, but be warned people complain about it being difficult to find opponents for multiplayer. I haven't tried the multiplayer, I prefer single player storylines and progression.
This game is absolutely amazing. Hands down, especially in VR, this is the most immersive star-wars flight sim that has ever existed. Ship accurate, full of details. The experience is great. This is not meant to be Battlefront. This is a sim, it's more involved than that. But compared to real-world flight sims, it's actually very light. Has it been abandoned? Yes. Is it hard to find folks on multiplayer? Absolutely. It's a damn shame. But even the single player experience is a complete tour-de-force in space sim glory. There has never been another game like this. It is an absolute blast to play.
Alright. This is one of the harder reviews I've had to write. Star Wars: Squadrons is a tale of tragedy. What do we have? An absolutely nuanced and wonderful Star Wars cockpit battle simulator in the vein of X-Wing or Tie Fighter or X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter (my favourite) from the 90s. The space combat is just marvelous. I've played quite a few games in the last couple of years but I have to say, for sheer unabashed joy and fun, this game gave it to me more than any other. I absolutely adored it. The story is not amazing but engaging enough for me to want to see it to the end. Whoever put this game together, I hope they know that they have made an absolute classic video game; something special. And then... The other stuff. This game has been left to wither on the vine as far as its potential. Yes, they added the B-Wing and another ship. We should have gotten a mission editor as well as more huge space battles like XWvsTF. When thinking about how much fun I had with this game, and how much more fun all of us could have had if the developer wished it... Well, there's the tragedy. If you're looking for a great multiplayer experience, you will most likely be frustrated. It's just not there anymore. If you enjoy classic Star Wars and flight sim combat games, Squadrons is the best. Short and sweet. Please MOTIVE. Please EA. You had something special here. There was so much more that could have been made of this game. Who knows, maybe somewhere up the road they might unshackle it and let the fans do something with it. I don't think that's very likely though. In sum. I feel a lot of things when I play this game. Both joy and resignation in equal measure. It's an experience you very well might find yourself having as well.
