I want to leave a review after finishing the game for an overall experience but seeing the hotfix from the dev team with many improvements on QoL then I decided to give them a thumb up now. Some ups and downs but STARDUST really is a solid choice for a SRPG game. Pros: - Very expressive animation. You can already expect it from watching the trailer and yes, they really put details in every animation in battle and the cutscene. You can see Yu scarily hop on the ground when trying to dodge an attack, Leon use his rushing skill with an angry face, even each character has a unique animation on different debuffs. Man, they design more animations on their characters than Riot did on after-2025 League of Legends champions - The gameplay revolves around the counter + combo mechanic, which is kinda fresh and fun. It requires you to calculate the mana resource + skill cooldowns to save for a counter card and strike all-in at the right moment. It also let players to move more freely instead of having to wait for opponents to come as you can counter to dodge an incoming attack. Most battles have a total of 10-12 enemies but they don't come at the same time and instead waves after waves so you don't have to pay attention to too much targets at the same time. - Many cool things start to appear after Chapter 4. Artifacts have unique passive effects. The enchanted cards enable more options to play. Unlocked skill cards also start to have more complicated effects. - Star and Yu are cute and I really love their interactions and characteristics. - Chill BGMs and funny looking monsters evoke me of the old Maplestory game. - You can watch a short cartoon every time a character use his/her ultimate. I'd prefer if the game can have more pieces of cartoon and a library to store them. Cons: - Some QoLs in combat are still needed. A quick right click to cancel the movement instead of having to click on the character again. An outline to show which enemy is being targeted by the skill, and even a preshow of their HP decreasing after the combo can help making decision quicker. Need a better way to distinguish buffs and debuffs and highlight if they are having a counter card ready or not. - Please let me click on the cards below to check their details after taking an action, but can still move. - There is a bug when a character is being covered by an objects (a tree log, a stone) then you cannot click on him/her to take action. Fortunately you can still click on the avatar to do it. - I don't like the camera automatically drag back to the main character while I'm watching the battlefield. - The execution of telling the story is kinda boring. Many unnecessary plots, the camera keep the same position over the cutscene and long text of localization really drag down the story pacing. Many battles in Chapter 2 and 3 are repetitive. The town doesn't have any changes as the story progresses, which is a pity as they have awesome animations. If you prioritize playing a game for the story, it can be a little disappointed. - The quests are also boring, with only the main quest really matters. I want the sub-quests to enable more story branches, or at least need to work with different comps, instead of just a repeat of previous main quest battles. - I know they are working on it so this can be added soon: The game need a manual save or more autosave points instead of only at the end of the day. It is really discouraging when you adjust the character's deck after he leveled up just to realize you cannot save it and quit but having to do another battle. So, if you want to play a classic SRPG game with a little twist in mechanic, and don't mind chilling with a slow pacing story then this game might be appropriate for you.

+ Amazing Pixel Graphics + Cool and unique concepts for SRPG + Characters have a lot of personality and are very likeable + Really good voice acting + Interesting story and decent pacing UNTIL after chapter 4 - my biggest gripe is after chapter 4 things accelerate WAY too fast. Feels like they ran out of money and just needed to end it. Sucks because characters were introduced at a good pace, the game felt like it was opening up and then it was wide open then it just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ended. If I'm being honest the ending and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up pacing at the end left a really bad taste in my mouth. Game has so much potential between the characters and possible world exploration, characters it could add synergies it could polish etc. all of this gets snuffed out way before it's time and it's just depressing - UI is kinda janky sometimes. You end up alternating clicks to figure out how to unstuck your menu -Camera controls also janky. The snap back is so annoying when you scroll ahead to confirm and ability - item crafting and acquisition is kinda irritating because it's not clearly stated who drops what at what rates Overalll super cool skeleton and so much potential ruined by a horrendous later "half" that feels like they ran out of money which is genuinely a shame.

Early but I really like the counter mechanic - if you keep some action points, when enemies attack you there's an option to use a skill to dodge and in some cases attack them instead. Grid SRPGs often ask you to obsess over skirting around enemy attack range so that you don't take the first hit, which is a waiting game that gets old fast. In Stardust, you still don't want to walk into a dogpile, but counters give you some leeway to be proactive without being punished.

So far 3 hours in, the gameplay is really fun and the combat system is really unique with these counters and combo cards that both you and the enemies have. It makes you think strategically when to use your attack to avoid being countered. Spent a couple restart to beat the gnoll leader, I thought it was going to be an optional to beat him but apparently it's just the tutorial chapter ?, These boss fights are pretty fun and challenging. I love the animations of these characters as well, absolutely no regret in buying this game!
