March 2026
Steins Gate 0 is a diamond in the rough. Some of the best moments in the series are shining through uncut, unpolished edges, but it’s not perfect. It’s not ideal. Hell, it’s not even good half of the time. Steins Gate 0 has massive pacing issues, the art style changes are questionable and ruin the unique aesthetic the original novel used to have. There’s such a frustrating amount of incredibly contrived plot twists - it may even rival the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. A lot of the plot points never reach satisfying conclusions and navigating through a maze of branches and endings to reach the finale is a pain in the ass, especially when you learn something in one ending, but then the game has to reiterate the exact same thing in the main branch once again. The fact that one of the major villains of the story is probably a textbook example of how not to write villains also doesn’t help. Steins Gate 0 never fully commits to any of the themes it tries to establish whether it’s a story about a revolutionary AI, journey to reach the Steins Gate Worldline and save Kurisu, or simply a tale of Okabe trying to come to terms with his fate - the themes are established, dashed aside only to be picked up many, many hours later, leaving you confused and devoid of any context you’ve already forgotten by that point. Steins Gate 0 is a frustrating novel to read. It hasn't lived up to my lofty expectations after the original one. But still I enjoyed it. The biggest mistake SG0 commits is its shift from a first person narration to an episodic structure with multiple POVs. I mean sure, sometimes it’s interesting to see all the different perspectives on the unfolding events, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say about it. The downsides are plenty however. Firstly, the original SG novel was predominantly a character-driven story and there weren’t many instances of overly long internal monologues, Okabe just did stuff and others reacted to it. SG0 however shifts to a third-person narration for everyone other than Okabe, which means that a lot of the time we learn things not from actions, but from their thoughts - an infinitely less exciting way. Secondly, the episodic structure by its very nature simply kills a lot of the tension in the story. Remember the twist about Kurisu's father? We see it from Okabe’s perspective in SG - which means that we don’t know a lot about it before it happens. We still can piece things together and guess it way in advance, but we won’t have a confirmation until the very end. The way SG0 does it however is that it shows exactly what happens from a POV of a relevant character. We know everything in advance now, but Okabe doesn’t - this creates a stark dissonance between what we know as a reader and what Okabe knows as a character, thus making certain moments which are supposed to have a certain gravity feel extremely bland instead. How the hell SG0 makes all these amateurish writing mistakes despite having the exact writing team as the original SG - that I for the life of me can’t understand. But still I enjoyed it. I don’t know why, maybe it’s fully irrational or something. Despite the fact that I can probably spend all day listing all the failings of SG0, I still can’t bring myself to really hate it for some reason. Maybe I just can’t accept the fact that SG0 is so infinitely inferior to SG, maybe I just chose to cherish all the few great moments it had rather than focusing on the negative stuff. Maybe I’m at a point of such delusion, I’ll read anything SG-related and say it’s peak cinema. Who knows? In the end of the day, it all boils down to the fact whether I can recommend this novel to anyone or not. And the answer is simple really - I do. Because despite all the downsides, SG0 still is a Steins Gate novel in its DNA. It’s still a story about the same character we know and love. It’s still a story which is relevant to the overarching narrative. It’s still a story that answers a lot of lingering questions left after SG. And it’s not like SG0 is completely devoid of any positive sides whatsoever. There’re certain themes in the story which were really ahead of its time in 2015 and still feel relevant to this day. There’re still plenty of emotional moments to be had in SG0, there’s still a large narrative puzzle to piece together and unfold. So, if you happen to know and love SG - SG0 is a no brainer for you. But on its own SG0 is definitely not among my favorite novels, not even close. It had a lot of potential, but never really realised it. And it’s a damn shame.

I reviewed the first game & talked about how I played S;G and S;G0 in chronological order [tldr; got to almost the end of the first vn, paused it right before the true ending, then read the entirety of S;G0 before going back to finish S;G] ... so leaving a positive review here is needed, too. Doing it this way was awkward at first having to adjust switching back & forth between the games but after like 5 mins I stopped noticing. It was like a mind blowing experience playing them this way. I went in blind knowing nothing about either story and came out of it stunlocked, unsure how to ever replicate the feelings I had playing this story. My biggest take away from S;G0 was honestly the character growth Okabe goes through. Going back to S;G and experiencing the true ending FINALLY after witnessing his journey in S;G0 was so satisfying. Idk what to say man, I wish I could bleach it from my memory and do it blind all over again. El Psy Kongroo </3

This game made me realize I want an AI girlfriend Delivers some of the most emotional and memorable moments in the series. The story dives deep into Okabe’s grief and trauma, turning him from mad scientist to sad scientist in a way that adds real depth to his character. I was hooked the entire time. It’s a darker, more introspective experience, and in the end, it feels like an essential companion to the original Where? Where are the Japanese Shaman Girls, Lintahlo?

As much as I have no words for the first game, I have even less for this one. The sheer amount and weight of the emotions I have felt throughout playing this game can only be compared to certain periods in my real life, nothing else comes even close. This game is truly remarkable, truly. 12.5/10
