This is one of the classics ! I highly recommend to people that are new to Stronghold, to start playing from the first sequel, Stronghold ( I ), than move to Stronghold Crusader ( I ). Really good for kids also because it just forces you to think more.

After pirating this game countless times, I finally decided to pay for it. The entire series was on sale super cheap. Wait for the entire series to go on sale and buy it.

A very nice castle management strategy game, featuring a war campaign, peace campaign, kingmaker (skirmish), freebuild and custom scenarios made in the game's map editor. I replay it every few years. The peace campaign is my favourite. The story in the war campaign is kinda cliché, but still fun. The typical, the country has fallen apart while the rightful king is away and it is up to you to defeat the greedy lords. Or join them. (There are no characters from Stronghold 1 or Crusader.) Freebuild is good for just building, but you can't get achievements in that mode. Once you are done with official stuff, you can download custom scenarios from Stronghold 2 Haven or something. I called it a castle sim. You need to uphold your popularity so that your people keep supporting you. Minimize negative things: gong (literal shit in the streets), rats and crime. Maximize the positives: religion, entertainment, ale and food. Then hike up the taxes to extra cruel for the money. There's also Honour, which is an important resource for recruiting troops. My favourite unit is the swordsman. I know knights are stronger, but swordsmen just have the right aesthetic, ya know? ALSO, don't bother with anything Firefly released after Stronghold 2. It's all crap.

Nostalgia. I remember stronghold 2 was the first game i installed on my PC when i bought it and first place and its the best among the series in my opinion although I haven't played stronghold 1 & warlord but among those I played stronghold 2 shines with magical brightness. The game gives many options to build your castle and combined with incredible amount of details the game contains; stronghold 2 presents itself as one of the best castle sims have been ever made. You have to take care of gongs and rats by yourself; Watch for crimes and criminals and control them by putting buildings that are related to controlling crime or crime will overrun your castle and people will leave for a place with less criminals; These are only few of stronghold 2's endless details and its a shame many of them were removed from later strongholds. Although stronghold 2 doesn't have some of QoL that was introduced by stronghold legends and later games it has its own fun and worth to play if you look for a castle sim to build and manage your own castle.
