Sept. 2025
Sunset Routes, developed and published by Renka, is a compact roguelite strategy experience that blends seafaring management with a light narrative framework. At first glance, it appears straightforward, but beneath its minimalist presentation lies a game that requires careful planning, adaptability, and resource balancing. The premise revolves around setting sail with a chosen crew, managing limited space on your ship, and deciding what goods to transport as you move from port to port. Every decision matters, from the destinations you chart to the type of crew you recruit, as each influences your voyage’s stability and profitability. Though modest in scope, the game finds strength in how it turns these simple choices into tense moments of risk and reward. The progression loop is both familiar and satisfying. Each run begins by assembling a crew, with different characters offering unique traits that affect what you can carry, how efficiently you can manage your ship, and the potential events you may encounter. Once underway, you must not only deliver goods but also maintain enough resources to satisfy recurring monetary demands, which appear at fixed intervals. These periodic challenges ensure that players are constantly evaluating their strategy—whether to pursue higher profits through risky ventures or take safer, more reliable routes that may pay less but guarantee progress. Crew management is equally important, as stronger characters can ease your burdens, while weaker or less compatible ones may force you to make sacrifices later. One of the game’s most appealing aspects is how approachable it is without sacrificing strategic depth. The interface is clean and easy to understand, allowing new players to learn quickly while still offering enough nuance to engage veterans of roguelite and management titles. Randomness plays a significant role, particularly in which crew members appear and how voyages unfold, and this unpredictability adds a sense of replay value. Runs rarely feel identical, and the multiple endings based on choices and outcomes give players incentives to return, experimenting with different approaches and strategies to see how far they can push their luck. The presentation leans toward simplicity but works well within the scope of the game. The art style carries a light, cartoonish charm, giving each crew member a bit of personality without overwhelming the screen. Graphics are functional, serving clarity rather than spectacle, and this suits the design, as the focus is always on decision-making rather than visual flair. The music and sound design also fit this philosophy, offering subtle but effective background support that sets the tone without distracting from the core gameplay. It creates an atmosphere that encourages focus, making it easy to lose yourself in a cycle of planning and sailing. However, the limitations of Sunset Routes become more apparent the longer you play. While the random elements and multiple endings provide reasons to replay, the core mechanics can eventually begin to feel repetitive, especially once you settle into familiar strategies. The milestone demands that appear at regular intervals, while effective at raising tension, can also feel punishing when luck is not on your side, sometimes derailing otherwise well-planned runs. Narrative depth is also light, with endings offering variation but not always delivering the kind of storytelling that some players might expect from a game with such a thematic premise. Despite these limitations, Sunset Routes succeeds in what it sets out to achieve. It is an affordable, tightly designed strategy roguelite that turns a small set of mechanics into a series of engaging and meaningful decisions. Its charm lies not in grand storytelling or visual spectacle, but in how it keeps players on edge, constantly weighing risk against reward, and finding satisfaction in even small victories. For those who enjoy resource management games, roguelite decision loops, or simply a compact strategy title that can be enjoyed in short bursts or extended sessions, this is a worthwhile journey to embark upon. I truly hope that someday the dev will release a 50h long visual novel about this world-setting, it's so intriguing lol. I already played Flashback (the sequel of this, sort of) and it was exciting to see some familiar characters and similar aesthetic. I really like Renka's style in general; The art, while only having few CGs, is very pretty and with a unique vibe, the music, despite being one song, is relaxing and catchy. Also the very limited and abrupt storytelling & world-building that somehow manage to shock me every time is something I adore too, altough the lack of content leaves me disappointed and eager for more. The gameplay is quite fun and addicting, there is a vast variety of characters with different skills, different difficulties and achievements with fun challenges. It's generally repetitive, however every playthrough varies due to the random elements and I found it entertaining to experiment with different character constellations. Also I enjoyed the different endings, that are unpredictable and immersive but very brief unfortunately. The gameplay additionally feels less intense compared to Flashback, where are many ways to mess up the game, whereas here the only way to fail is by running out of gold ( and even then you get rewarded with vacation!!! >o< ). Overall I find this game pretty fun, the gameplay itself is rather simple but the different challenges together with story fragments captivated me for quite a while. This game gives me a very pleasant feeling altogether :)

A simple game with deck-building mechanics. Each turn, you can choose one of three characters to add to your ship. Your characters have abilities and synergies that improve your profit. Soon, simply winning by making a profit isn't enough, and you'll find yourself trying to pull off some crazy combos. Worth its price.
