Sword art online - Lost song is part visual novel, part action game. In the action parts you are supposed to play as Kirito. I sad supposed, because by the second island nothing prevents you to switch out the party leader to any of the characters, or indeed make a new character of your preference. Still, the events are centered around Kirito, and if he isn’t the party leader, or at least in the party, he won’t gain the levels required to progress through level gated fights. While not immediately apparent, a lot of the mobs will be reused at various stages. Notably the winged orb things will be present in a lot of places, just at different level and with a slight change in texture. And not just mobs, a lot of mid-level, and even high level bosses will be reused later. Their skillset might be different, but the appearance will be largely the same. Eventually, (literally) higher level places will be unlocked in the first 3 islands. At that stage you have to return to these previously unreachable parts of these maps to continue with the main quest, but it still feels as yet another reuse of the assets. The voice acting in the game is excellent, but the sound file quality feels compressed. Not surprising, the game has tons of voice acting, and it was released for Playstation Vita too, where size should matter. Still, higher quality sound files would have been nice for the PC version. All the visual novel parts will be fully voiced by the original voice actors, including high profile ones, like the one for Kirito. In case you wonder, the 2 songs licensed were “Cynthia no hikari” form Eir Aoi, and “Yoru no niji wo koete” from Luna Haruna, both high profile singers. Too bad those song voices didn’t blend well with the voice actor in the visual novel parts. A core game feature is flying. And not just as a means of travel, you will be fighting enemies in the air. Even if you want to avoid the air fight parts, some of the mandatory boss fights will take place there – and it wasn’t easy for me to control the combat in the air. Free flying as a method of travel is fun. Hover fighting was clunky for me. I played the game with the controller. It didn’t help that ascending was A, descending was double pressed A, which I messed up regularly. Honestly, LT should have been a direction toggle instead of multiplayer messaging – in a single player game I had literally no use for that. But by holding it down before pressing A for descend would have helped. In dungeons the flying / hovering is disabled, but still there are floating enemies. You are supposed to jump / double jump to reach them, then by keeping attacking them you sorta kinda maintain your floating. All in all it was an annoying mechanism. The game has auto save, it will save after important events, whatever those might be. There is no feedback whatsoever when an autosave has happened. So I just always returned to the bed in the inn, and saved there, to have a controlled hard save. That is the only place where a manual save is possible. There are a few slots to save into, though I only recycled the first 3. The skills are unlocked as you level up. The same is true for all members of the party. Using a skill will level them up, making them more potent. Merely swinging your weapon is a skill in itself, which will level up too – for the weapon type equipped. It feels right to manage Kirito’s, and perhaps the custom created character’s skills. But you will have to manage the skill tree of all the rest of the roster – they won’t equip newly acquired skills, and as such, won’t gather proficiency in them either. Theoretically the levels and skill levels go up all till 1000, though on a normal playthrough I reached only levels in the low 400s. To reach up till the hard limit, a new game plus should be started, the enemies there will be higher levels. You will start the new game plus with the state at the end of your normal playthrough. Early on I intended to level up the full roster. Eventually, around the middle of the second island I gave up. From then on, I just focused on my main party : Kirito, Asuna, Rain. This way I had access to a high level party for the boss fights. In the visual novel parts supposedly the rest of the roster is present too, but during the fights, only your party will participate. There is a store, where you can buy weapons and accessories. As you progress in the story, higher rank weapons will become available, though they will be plain weapons. The ones from drops / chests will have bonus properties. Some of them will be even of higher attack power. The weapons can be upgraded, but requires materials to be grinded. No point in leveling them up beyond a few levels, new tiers will appear soon, and a new rank weapon is on par with a +10 (i.e. max) leveled up weapon of the previous rank, making higher level upgrades not worth it. The accessories help a bit, but they are not that important. Later in the game their cost won’t be a problem. The drops from the field are unidentified, you will have to identify them in the store, to reveal their properties. It can be done in bulk. This mechanism makes it impossible to equip a (potentially) better weapon just found in the field, on the run. The game is a bit grindy. If in a dungeon, I cleared it all the way to the boss room, and on the way out too, and still didn’t match the level of enemies on the higher maps. Early on I even tried to level up each possible party members, but after reaching level 160 with them I just gave up. It took a lot of pointless grinding to level up everyone. True, Kirito gained some extra levels in the process, but those were rendered moot, as the experience gain tappers out. By the end of the normal playtrough I was still below level 500. By default each character is equipped with the skills for only one weapon, but are capable of equipping a few types of weapons, depending on their race. If you want to change their weapon type, do it so right at the beginning of the character acquisition, and stick to that weapon for the rest of the game. Notably, there won’t be any spear users by default. If you want one, you will have to switch a compatible character to that weapon type, or make the custom character of a race able to use it. Once you reach the second island, you will be able to make a custom character. It will look like one of the people wondering around in the town. Though the protagonist of the game will be still Kirito. He will have to fight some duels to progress the story, so he should always be included into the party, to level him up for those mandatory fights for progress. The most annoying duel was with Sumeragi. His special attack had a wide range, and can easily cause a damage more than a third of the healthbar. There are a few side character storyline achievements. You don’t have to level or bond specially with those characters, their story will be experienced as you progress with the events. You just have to interact with the exclamation mark characters in the town. It is a bit confusing, but some of those side stories finishes only after the end credits rolled. It means the game doesn’t end with that final fight. There are a few hours of more content, mostly visual novel stuff. But those are gated behind yet another duel, though not so hard as the Sumeragi one. Also, only after the credits is the arena unlocked. There you can duel with your party members. Their AI will be upgraded in this part, each character having a different playstyle. I only fought a few of those, and eventually got a dagger, which when identified turned out to be a rank 10 one, my only such high level weapon. Before and after the fight there will be a visual novel part, though not sure if that is repeated for each duel, I didn’t fight the same character twice. The game was stable, it didn’t crash for me.

The camera is a little choppy, but if you get past that little annoyance the game is really enjoyable. I love Sword Art Online and have always wanted to play something close to it and this is that game. The flying element from ALO is pretty cool too. This game is great for fans of the series and people who have never heard of it. You should definitely check it out.
