March 2025
Tails of Iron is a very story-driven game with a simple but effective narrative. Throughout the game, the narrator is always explaining what’s happening, which gives it the feel of a book-like story while making the game more immersive. One of the cooler aspects of the game is that as you progress, the background of the areas change. The world around you evolves, with houses and paths being restored, which makes the journey feel more meaningful. The combat is simple but not too easy. Fights are almost always planned, meaning enemies won’t just endlessly chase you if you run past them, if you’re even able to. However, while the combat starts off fun, it becomes repetitive over time, especially since many boss fights have almost identical movesets. The hitboxes can also feel unfair at times, which adds some frustration. The game has a lot of "side quests", but they tend to be the same over and over again. They don’t feel very creative, making them more of a chore than something exciting. The overall structure is repetitive, with a lot of walking back and forth. That said, there’s a small twist towards the end of the game that adds some freshness to the experience. It’s a short game, and while it’s not worth it at full price, it’s definitely worth picking up on sale. If you’re looking for a story-driven experience with solid combat, Tails of Iron is worth checking out!

Disclaimer - I got this game cheap and payed it on Fairy Tail difficulty as read reviews that some fights were frustrating. Ignoring the fact that I had made the game too easy and there is no way to change difficulty mid-game I really enjoyed my 9 hours going through the story and getting all achievements except one (linked to beating the boss on the hardest mode). As usual I am guessing the difficulty I want is somewhere between easy and normal, a filthy casual who sometimes can git gud. The art style is cute and they have clearly had some fun with the character names and story. People moaned about the block and parry system, but for me I didn't notice any issues. Some other reviewers moaned you have to backtrack a bit, but the map is so small, I can't understand what their issue was, as traversing takes a few minutes in most cases. I probably won't play through again on a harder mode, but the second game will definitely go on the list.

Honestly a really fun game! To me, the only problem with it is how short it can feel after an initial play through, their environmental storytelling sometimes is off the charts! With the big bad looming in the distance, plus combat is still viable regardless of what outfit you pick, it's all down to play style. And I think that's really neat.

I recommend this game... but I also do not like this game... more on this at the bottom. Ridiculously difficult. I played on normal, thinking that would be ample... but this game is really hard. Like, fresh out the gates you have to do a duel with your brother, this duel is very easy. So what's the problem? After that duel, you get into a fight you have to lose. Fair enough, games do this a lot for the plot. But after that, you have no armour and have to do a whole bunch of battles with the odds massively stacked against you. Far as I can tell there's no levelling system, so if you expect to be able to grind your way up to doing the fights, you're sod out of luck I'm afraid. It's possible that I didn't get far enough into the game for it to become more doable. But I just couldn't beat a battle against a ranged enemy and a melee one. Having to block ranged attacks, but also having to deal with the one up close and personal is just too much for me. Sorry dev, you were friendly on twitter, but I just didn't get on with your game I'm afraid. As for my non difficulty related issues. To go borderless windowed you need an additional program that I recommend you download anyway called "Borderless Windowed Gaming". The game by default is full screen, if you want it non full screen, it will not be borderless. The program is great for games that don't do borderless. This game does not, very unfortunate. The dialogue is bewildering, it involves lot's of whistly noises and pictures, sometimes it's a hit or a miss whether or not you'll understand someone. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a puzzle, or just a quirky idea at dialogue. It's amusing, but a subtitle option would be nice for a translation of what they're saying. I'm bad at pictionary. The graphics are adorable, it's a shame the plushy didn't sell (Damn you makeship!) because that plushy is how I found out about this game. Even not having tried this game before, I had to get that plushy... Unfortunately, no. So buy the game, get those sales numbers up, and maybe the plushy will sell if the dev tries again. (Alternatively, find a better way to sell a plushy) There's tonnes of little details in the background to look at and love as well as unique appearances for equipable items. Of course I'm choosing the spatula! Finally we come to the point at the start. I am critical of the game, I did not enjoy my time playing. I found it too difficult to get very far. Maybe I am just bad at this type of game, the combat felt like there were just too many buttons to remember all at once. I didn't expect the game to start off hard, most games ease you into hard. But I know fine well that a lot of people love games that start off hard. So for those people, I recommend this game. You're going to love it, you'll hate frogs, but you'll like this game. But if you're anything like me, the type of person who primarily dodges in games because blocking requires more work, then this game is not for you. For this game, you need to know to block and to dodge, you cannot be really good at one or the other, you have to be somewhat good at them both. So for me, I had a bad time trying to do the combat. I know I didn't give it long, but I hate games where I die frequently fresh out the gate. With Dark Souls, you can get through quite a lot of the game before it starts to give you trouble. You can feasibly get through the game without having to parry once. If ever it's hard, you can grind levels. But this game? Those aren't options. You have to block as well, you have to rely on your gear, you cannot just out level the content. If you buy the game, I hope you enjoy it more than I did. If my review made you choose not to buy the game, I hope you find something more fitting for you. Regardless, I recommend looking up a playthrough, the game truly is adorable... Even the pictionary. Much love, thank you for reading.

The game is good, but it's not a metroidvania. It's more of a 2D souls-like. The first battles are hard and frustrating, but once you get used to the pace of combat and to how the defences, rolls and windows of opportunity for attack work, you can go all the way to the end boss with no issues. There is one aspect that I didn't like: holy backtracking Batman, you spend so much time walking back from the boss fight to the starting point, just to discover another quest that makes you go back AGAIN. I recommend the game still. It's not perfect (and it could use some better support for 32:9 ultrawide as well), but the combat is solid, the art style is great, the music and sounds effect are very on point, the story is nothing special but it's entertaining and keeps you going. I have 15h with the game, half of it was for the main story, and the other half was completing side content.
