DLC edit: The DLC is a great time! So far it seems to be about as long as the base game. I am 10 hours in and I still have more to go. I am enjoying the gameplay more than the base game, though the base game's alters had more depth. That said, the four new scientist Jans are interesting and run the gambit in terms of personality. They get along better with each other than the base game alters but they're each a bit much to deal with as individuals lol. Their character arcs are very brief which I think is why they don't feel deep as characters. But I just play the people pleaser and have been rewarded for my efforts. Overall the DLC is more gameplay heavy and the base game is more narrative heavy. I ended up finishing in 15 hours on normal difficulty. Overall it is a very cool story with a couple of very tough decisions. The story has a thoughtful message and the concept of teaming up with "alters" is unlike anything else out there, so the developers deserve big props just for that. However, I never understood why Earth NEEDED rapidium (I understood why another character wanted it) which made me not take its collection seriously. I was just told it was "important" over and over. There was some mention of using it to grow crops, but it all seemed like a money making venture for a luxury and its importance to the company was shareholder value. I needed more info to feel like it was worth prioritizing it over stuff more relevant to my immediate survival. It is an easy game even though I am not a veteran of resource management games. I found Acts 1 and 2 had very generous time limits but the 3rd act was a very close call and I had no time to dally. The resource management part of the game is pretty simple and it started to feel a bit boring in Act 3, but that was also when the game was ending so I think that's actually perfect. I still plan to get the DLC, though.
I was positively surprised by how fun this game is! Three things I think are important when deciding on playing it: - It is more focused on the narrative than on the gameplay. There's a lot of dialogue. The split between base-building and talking isn't huge though, something like 40/60. - This isn't an "infinite" survival base-building game. You essentially have "levels" where you build stuff as best as you can, and then when the story moves on you move on to a different "level" as well, leaving almost all of your previous structures behind. - The "levels" have limited in-game days, so you will be on a timer. I'd say playing on normal/mid difficulty it felt fairly generous, I was tense but never felt punished for small mistakes/lack of optimization. If you can bear with these aspects, I'd certainly recommend the game. The story is really interesting, and while I'm not going to say it gave me a new perspective on life, it did give me stuff to think about. I didn't think I would care about the Alters as much as I did! Each of them has something specific to deal with which makes them feel very unique, and they also contribute in different ways to the overarching story. Great job on the VA's part for voicing a bunch of versions of the same character in a convincing, charming way. Great music, scenery is cool, the base-building bit is fun. All around great time for me.
One of the best games of 2025. A must-have experience for Science Fiction/Space Opera fans. Alex Jordan did a titanic work by giving life to all the distinct versions of the main character Jan Dolski. Definitely will replay the game 2nd time later. IMO, The Alters reached the highs of Frostpunk and War of Mine. Games that raised a lot of tough questions and decisions that most people may face in their real lives.
First, I want to give my honest rating for this game while considering the most important factors for me: that it’s a single-player experience, the price, and the amount of playable content. As of writing this review, I’ve completed the game once with 38 hours played, and I can confidently say it was absolutely worth the price. One of the strongest parts of the game is the characters. Every Alter has their own personality, background, struggles, goals, and opinions, which made interacting with them genuinely interesting throughout the entire playthrough. The story kept me hooked every step of the way, and the gameplay stayed engaging without becoming frustrating. I played on Medium difficulty, and it felt well balanced overall. There were a few tasks that weren’t very clear at first, and sometimes the game could do a better job explaining certain objectives. However, after experimenting a bit, I was usually able to figure out what the game wanted me to do. I can already see myself playing through the game at least two more times to unlock everyone’s stories and complete all the achievements. That said, I really wish the game included a New Game+ feature. Keeping research progress between playthroughs would make repeat runs even more enjoyable, especially since the Scientist ends up spending most of the game researching instead of contributing to other tasks. Visually, the game looks fantastic. The graphics add a lot to the mystery and atmosphere, and the music at both the beginning and end of the game made everything feel even more epic. I really appreciate games that know how to set the stage like a movie before the adventure even begins. Overall, I’d give The Alters a 7.9/10. I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone interested in a strong story-driven sci-fi experience, especially at $45 or less.
This is, by far, one of the most interesting games I think I've ever played. I've been playing video games for almost 30 years, and I've never come across any quite like this. What first turned me on to this studio. 11 Bit, was "This War Of Mine" and "Frostpunk", so I thought I'd give this one a go considering how much I liked their other games. I was NOT disappointed. It's not a very long game, but it'll stick with me for a very long time. I also plan on going back and doing multiple playthroughs to trigger as many different scenarios and endings as I can. I HIGHLY recommend you play this game if you're a fan of stimulating, cerebral games that also happen to be quite fun. Doubt they'll ever see this, but I'd really like to thank 11 Bit Studios for giving me this masterpiece.
