I was positively surprised by how fun this game is! Three things I think are important when deciding on playing it: - It is more focused on the narrative than on the gameplay. There's a lot of dialogue. The split between base-building and talking isn't huge though, something like 40/60. - This isn't an "infinite" survival base-building game. You essentially have "levels" where you build stuff as best as you can, and then when the story moves on you move on to a different "level" as well, leaving almost all of your previous structures behind. - The "levels" have limited in-game days, so you will be on a timer. I'd say playing on normal/mid difficulty it felt fairly generous, I was tense but never felt punished for small mistakes/lack of optimization. If you can bear with these aspects, I'd certainly recommend the game. The story is really interesting, and while I'm not going to say it gave me a new perspective on life, it did give me stuff to think about. I didn't think I would care about the Alters as much as I did! Each of them has something specific to deal with which makes them feel very unique, and they also contribute in different ways to the overarching story. Great job on the VA's part for voicing a bunch of versions of the same character in a convincing, charming way. Great music, scenery is cool, the base-building bit is fun. All around great time for me.
This is, by far, one of the most interesting games I think I've ever played. I've been playing video games for almost 30 years, and I've never come across any quite like this. What first turned me on to this studio. 11 Bit, was "This War Of Mine" and "Frostpunk", so I thought I'd give this one a go considering how much I liked their other games. I was NOT disappointed. It's not a very long game, but it'll stick with me for a very long time. I also plan on going back and doing multiple playthroughs to trigger as many different scenarios and endings as I can. I HIGHLY recommend you play this game if you're a fan of stimulating, cerebral games that also happen to be quite fun. Doubt they'll ever see this, but I'd really like to thank 11 Bit Studios for giving me this masterpiece.
To be honest, I had a massive problem with reviewing The Alters. The game itself is quite original and interesting; it touches on intriguing issues and almost philosophical questions about consciousness and existence, but I still feel as if it was never given the chance to fully spread its wings. Personally, I get the impression that the subject matter itself was a bit too much for the developers, and despite their best efforts, they failed to fully exploit its potential. Nonetheless, I still think that game is an interesting albeit little bit pricey experience. ✅ [*] Graphics is quite beautiful. Game itself looks good and some sceneries are superb (lava river), despite world itself being a barren rock. [*] The soundtrack contributes to a constant sense of melancholy and tension. Sound effects, especially ambient and mechanical ones, are also well-crafted and add to the immersion. [*] Planet is barren, lifeless world. It’s openly hostile environment mixed with slew of dangers creates a wonderful setting for a survival game. [*] Story is quite good but little bit uneven. I would distinguish two independent parts of the story: what is happening on the planet, and contacts with the corporation that sent our ship and its employees. Planetside story is quite good (solve mystery about planet and our crash) mixed with our alters real-but-not stories and memories. Unfortunately corporate part tends to be a little bit stereotypical. [*] The game does a pretty good job of showing how the same people can be completely different as a result of different life choices. Different education, experiences and completely separate and distinctive personalities. [*] Research tree. It has been well designed, as each researched technology seems like a real breakthrough and significantly helps us in the game. In addition, some research requires so-called “planetary samples.” Their constant shortage forces us to choose the research that is most important (to us) and should be carried out. [*] Difficulty is well balanced. Normal provides sufficient challenge, while hard is for fans of true survival. [*] Rapidium anomalies and alt-reality seeping. [*] Since each auto-save begins in the morning, the game reflects your choices in dialogues. In my opinion, this is a great solution – I can make the same decision or, knowing that it is a poor choice, decide on a different one. [*] Base building is a constant game of balance and optimalization. Due to the base's unusual shape and mobility, two interesting limitations have been introduced: shape—we must adjust individual rooms to best utilize the available space; and weight—because each additional room, resource or item directly impacts the amount of fuel needed to move the base. 😐 [*] Why they called that mineral a “rapidium”… Ultra-low effort here. [*] Shader compilation every time I launch the game. Subsequent are faster than first one but still… ❌ [*] Endings are disappointing. [*] Not all Jan’s are equally useful. Jan Scientist is a must have for every playthrough, while Jan Shrink is nearly useless. [*] In terms of emotion or behavior alters are a bit too one-dimensional. It is usually easy to identify the personality trait that drives them, and then choose dialogue options to maximize the benefits. They are also too stereotypical, and present a distorted image of their professions. [*] Hard-coded event that is unavoidable no matter what you do. [*] Anomaly removal is simplified and can be broken down to: “point torch at it and wait till it implodes”. [*] Act 2 is too clustered and frankly, the weakest part of the game. Way too many expensive projects and too little time. That way you’re not really enjoying your game but running 24/7 to make everything works in time. [*] I think the potential of rapidium could have been better exploited. It's a really interesting concept, which unfortunately was only used superficially. We only discover its true potential at the end of Act 3, while it could have been one of the central themes of the game. [*] You cannot independently upgrade base fuel capacity. It’s bound to base size and can only be upgraded alongside it. [*] Price/length ratio isn’t well balanced.
A builder Jan is a sole survivor of a spaceshipwreck. To keep the base going, he needs more hands and thus employs a technology that allows him to clone a version of himself that has made different life choices, like standing up to his abusive father or not going abroad to study. What results are Alters — versions of Jan that are partially him and partially their own people. The following is a game with two main genres: base-building (and resource management) and exploration, with a bunch of mini-games on top of them. It's a kind of game that keeps showing you tutorials on the 20th hour of playing. No gameplay elements of The Alters are of top quality — as in, I've played better tycoons, base-building games, and exploration games — but they blend together well and tell a very coherent story. The story itself could have also been deeper. Meeting different versions of himself, Jan has epiphanies, but they're a bit shallow — and honestly, most Alters feel like completely different people rather than the same guy with a different tint. Even the Shrink (whose whole issue is that it would be unprofessional of him to provide therapy to himself!) kind of just shrugs it off. I feel that the whole "bunch of version of yourself" aspect is woefully underexplored here. But in the end, The Alters plays like a good narrative game where you make choices through both dialogue and gameplay, and it's a nice grounded sci-fi story that would have worked even if all Jans were simply a normal crew. The exploration is also limited, but decent, and I had fun figuring pylon placement in the 3rd act where it seemed impossible at first. I had a good time with this game and would easily recommend it.
Easily the best written game I have ever played. Hands down. I love Silksong, Clair Obscur, and Hades II, but this is 100% my game of the year. If you like amazing sci-fi stories with interesting characters and loads of difficult choices, there is no better game/movie/anything than The Alters. The gameplay isn't perfect, sometimes running around and collecting certain resources can be tedious and the combat is not very fun. But overall, exciting and challenging base management is merged seamlessly with a story that will sit with you for a long time. Steam says I beat this game ~2 months ago and I've thought about it everyday since. I cannot recommend this game enough.
