The Evil Within is a horror survival game that is about an investigation of what seems to be mass homocide at Beacon Mental Hospital in Krimson City, but things turn out to be much more deep and sinister than what all of this comes across at the beginning. First off, the protagonist of this game, Detective Sebastian Castellanos is a very emotionless, stale and boring person who doesn't seem to get affected by anything, even though he had endure things that would drive a normal person to madness i.e. fighting monsters countless times, waking up inside a nightmare world that he would go on to visit lots of times via a portal and so on. Not even a single time he seem like he was on the brink of completely losing it, which doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Lots of interiors in this game are very grimy, full of looming shadows, artistically designed buildings and ominous escape routes. All of that combined created a frightening mood of expectation. Sometimes you even confused your own shadow with the one of an enemy, all of which created a massively immersive and compelling experience. When it comes to the antagonists, bosses and villains you come across, it has to be poined out that they are just so unpredictable, smart and hard-to-trick. They would eventually get weirder the more you progress, but still are inventive creations. Their names are as follows: Ruvik, a brilliant neuroscientist who created the STEM system to achieve his goal of rebuilding the world to bring back his deceased sister. The Kepper, a big, masked figure with a safe, with wrapped barbed around it with, on his head, who loves to wield a large hammer and keeps respawning after dying. Laura, who is an extremely fast and powerful creature, who can only be hurt and killed with fire. The Sadist, a chainsaw-wielding lunatic who serves as a recurring antagonist. Valerio Jimenez, a deranged hospital orderly acting as an antagonist aand various sections of the game. Shigyo, a grotesque, multi-limbed creature The weaponry you receive are modest and well-balanced - a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, greande and a crossbow, which caters to a variety of special attacks (freeze, electrocute, harpoon, explosive etc.) Managing the usage of your arsenal is crucial, as there's only little available and to be found, very similar to the Resident Evil Games. Sebastian runs out of stamina so quickly, tho. Yes you can actually upgrade that along with other abilities, the stock, your weapons and so on, but at the very beginning his lack of stamina is frustrating as hell. Checkpoints are scarce, so surviving and not dying repeatedly and stupidly is very, very important, which makes for such an exhilarating expierience no matter whether you decide to flee from an enemy or fight it. Making extremely calculated moves is absolutely key. Playing the stealth route is possible and not a bad decision, but still it somehow feels like that, whether you plan on throwing a bottle at an enemy or sneak up behind it, they somehow still manage to detect you shortly before you could go for it. That playstyle was, for me at least, not the most accessible gameplay style to adopt. You're not entirely powerless tho, One of EW's most enjoyable mechanics is its very simple upgrade system. "Green gel" is the resource you need to use in order to improve your attributes in the nightmare world accessible via a portal in the form of a broken mirror, which partially breaks as soon as you approach it and can be heard with a very distinct music. It is spread across the entire map, which make it worth to explore every possible inch and corner. Cashing in the points you obtain by collecting the green gel allows you to shape your own gameplay style. For instance, if you're more like an aggressive player, it makes sense to value upgrading the damage, accuracy and reload time of your weapons, rather than the ability to run for longer. And if you're a player preferring the stealth playstyle, the other way around makes the most sense. Conclusion: The Evil Within is a vicious, barbaric, challenging and overall very fun game. Its eerie world and imaginative, creative and unique enemies are genuinely frightening and smart. The lack of resources you got makes it even more challenging than already to defeat them. All of which makes it seem like the odds are against you, whilst they're not as soon as you keep a cool head and don't start panicking.

A Decade Later, Still a Masterpiece – The Evil Within Series I remember playing The Evil Within back when it first launched on PlayStation. Hard to believe that was 11 years ago! Time really flies. I was instantly hooked by the intense gameplay and incredible storytelling. It wasn’t just another horror game—it had depth, atmosphere, and a psychological edge that stuck with me long after I put down the controller. Recently, I bought both The Evil Within 1 and 2 again, and diving back into Sebastian’s journey has been an absolute thrill. The tension, the twisted world design, and the emotional weight of the story still hold up so well. Tango Gameworks created something truly special. Experiencing the psychological horror all over again feels like reconnecting with a long-lost favorite movie or book, only better because you're right there in the middle of it. I'm so happy to be playing these games again and I really hope they continue the series. A third game exploring more of Sebastian’s world or even a new character in the same universe would be a dream come true. Fingers crossed we get more from this chilling and brilliant franchise!

When The Evil Within was first announced, it was impossible not to be excited—a survival horror game directed by Shinji Mikami, the mastermind behind Resident Evil 4? Sign me up! What we got was a terrifying, mind-bending experience that felt like a spiritual successor to Resident Evil, but with a psychological horror twist that made it stand out. That being said, this game does not hold your hand. If you jump in expecting a straightforward horror story, think again. The narrative is cryptic, fragmented, and deliberately confusing. You won’t fully grasp what’s happening on your first playthrough, and even by the end, you’ll still be left with questions. The DLCs, which were released later, provide the missing pieces of the puzzle. So, if you love intense horror, a slow-burning story, and classic survival horror mechanics, The Evil Within is a game that will haunt your mind long after the credits roll. A Survival Horror Experience Rooted in Resident Evil Right from the start, you can feel the Resident Evil DNA in The Evil Within. The over-the-shoulder camera, limited ammo, inventory management, tense enemy encounters, this game feels like a darker, more psychological take on Resident Evil 4. But unlike Resident Evil, where the story is usually easy to follow, The Evil Within throws you into a nightmare without context. You play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos, investigating a gruesome crime scene at Beacon Mental Hospital. Within minutes, reality twists into a hellish nightmare, and you are fighting for survival against grotesque monsters, surreal environments, and a villain who seems to control reality itself. The game masterfully blends psychological horror with classic survival horror gameplay, forcing you to adapt, conserve resources, and never feel truly safe. A Story That Unfolds in Chaos Let’s be real: you will not understand the story at first. The Evil Within’s narrative is intentionally fragmented. One moment, you’re running through a mental hospital, the next, you’re in a twisted village that feels ripped straight from Resident Evil 4, and suddenly, you’re in a burning cityscape. It feels like a fever dream, and progression only brings more questions rather than answers. The game throws hints and clues throughout, but you won’t get the full story even after finishing it. This might frustrate some players, but for those who love unraveling a deep mystery, it’s an engaging experience. The real story explanations come in the DLCs, particularly The Assignment and The Consequence, which shift the perspective and finally connect the dots. Gameplay – A Brutal, Unforgiving Horror Experience If you love challenging survival horror, this game delivers. Limited ammo, smart resource management, every bullet counts, and enemies hit hard. If you run in guns blazing, you won’t last long. Stealth is a real option, sneaking past enemies and using traps can save your life (and your precious ammo). A tense upgrade system, You collect Green Gel to upgrade Sebastian’s abilities, making choices feel crucial. Unpredictable environments, One moment, you're in a dark, abandoned house, and the next, you're transported to a nightmare world with no explanation. This unpredictability keeps you on edge the entire game. You never feel safe, which is exactly what great survival horror should do. Pros: [*]Pure survival horror at its best – If you miss the old-school Resident Evil experience, this is for you. [*]Brilliant enemy and level design – The creatures are horrifying, and the shifting environments add to the unease. [*]A deeply psychological story – Even if you don’t understand everything at first, it will keep you hooked. [*]Challenging and rewarding gameplay – Every fight feels intense, and resource management is crucial. [*]DLCs actually matter – They don’t just add extra content; they complete the story. Cons: [*]Story is too cryptic at first – If you don’t like being left in the dark, this might frustrate you. [*]Some mechanics feel outdated – Stiff movement and awkward camera angles can be frustrating at times. [*]You NEED the DLCs for the full story – The base game alone doesn’t give all the answers. Conclusion: The Evil Within is not for the faint of heart. It’s challenging, bizarre, and doesn’t explain itself easily, but that’s what makes it special. If you push through the confusion and embrace the horror, you’ll find one of the most unique survival horror experiences of the last decade. If you’re a fan of Resident Evil, psychological horror, and games that make you think, this one is a must-play. Just be prepared to feel lost, until the DLCs finally show you the bigger picture.
