THQ Nordic is part of Embracer Group. Their Q2 fiscal quarter runs April-September. Just squeezing a few EA sales out for that financial report. It's a good start. But the game is practically in an Alpha stage. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you understand how much work this game needs to be fully-functional. Just get the Demo and save your money for now. What's in the game is in a promising state. For example, you can see inside your workshops again! Praise the Lord. But, core features are missing that will limit your enjoyment. For example, despite their EA release announcement, the feature where you hover over an item and it tells you its selling price at nearby markets -- it was marked as "coming soon" in the tutorial. Also, there's no cart management or automation features. The game is nothing but a click-fest without cart management and simple automation. Will quickly overwhelm you once you have more than one business or cart to handle. Also, this part *is* advertised, but bears a mention: You can't just control your guys in town and go talk to people. They said the focus here is on the businesses now, not on the individuals. You can find your guy in town, but you can't manually move him. Like if you want to court a lady, you can't just find your guy, click him, find a single lady in town, click her and interact. No, you have to click into your portrait, find where your courtship target is listed, click her portrait, and select it thru menus. A lack of direct interaction with the city pulls the player right out of the immersion. If this is the direction that this game develops into, it will not sell. I guarantee it. There's nothing immersive about playing a dynasty head that you can't directly control. At the end of the day, the thumbs up is based on the "Day 1 EA" handicap -- for the state it's currently in, it's not bad. It's promising. But if you're tight on cash, add this to your wishlist and check back in about 6 months. GTA6 is coming out in November anyway. You'll probably be busy.
Disclaimer: I loved the original Guild (1) and played it long before it hit Steam. Just launching this game already hit me with a wave of nostalgia. I love the chill soundtrack, and I love the original German voice acting even more! Sure, I've already run into a few bugs, but I'll give the developers the benefit of the doubt and give this a thumbs up. Keep at it, and this will be great. It's already noticeably more stable and better-performing than The Guild 3 was at launch! ____________________________________________ Edit: After another 12 hours of playtime, I can say this is very much Early Access, but enjoyable, and the foundation is very solid. Compared to The Guild 3's release, the game is much more stable, and I've only run into a few minor graphical bugs and no crashes at all. The market, opponent AI, and events still need work, but that was to be expected at this stage. I'm still confident this will capture even more of the spirit of The Guild 1 and will entertain me for some time!
It runs well and looks decent. My biggest issue is the AI automation, for example when I assign a family member as master of a shop and they start selling things that are required for other things, using ALL my carts for the 1 shop and the list goes on. I would at least like an option to turn it off but ideally I want full control of how the AI does the automation.
I don't understand negative comments that complain it's not a different game from the original. They say very clearly it's a remake, a homage to the original; and that's exactly what it is. I suppose it's fine to leave negative reviews if you didn't enjoy it so I guess that's fair, but don't complain about it when they have a free demo here and state its Guild 1 Remake.. That being said, I actually wrote an in-depth review for Guild 1 here on steam back in 2014 and I think a lot of it stands up for this game as well! I am looking forward to seeing how this game shapes out, because the devs seem keen to listen to feedback and shape the game to what the players want. I am happy if they keep everything pretty much the same as the original, and would be stoked if they increased the depth of this already brilliant game.
If you have ever played The Guild series, this is shaping up to be one of the best entries yet. It already captures a lot of what made the older games so enjoyable, while adding enough improvements to make it feel fresh. There is still work to be done. Some of the day-to-day tasks can become tedious and really need better automation, especially as your business and family grow. A few quality-of-life improvements would go a long way toward letting you focus more on strategy and less on repetitive management. That said, the foundation is very strong. The atmosphere, progression, economy, and overall Guild experience are all here, and I have really enjoyed my time with it so far. With continued development and some attention to automation and quality-of-life features, this could easily become one of the best games in the series. Definitely recommended for fans of The Guild.
