This game gave me one of the most memorable dynasty stories I've ever experienced in a game. I started as a simple blacksmith named August Adler, built a smithy, expanded into a business empire, rose through the nobility to become a Duke, and grew the family wealth to over 1.4 million. The best part? August lived to 112 years old. He outlived his wife, all of his children, multiple heirs, and lived long enough to see his great-great-great-grandchildren. He even had a statue built in his honor while he was still alive. The business, dynasty, inheritance, and family systems combined to create a story that felt completely unique and unscripted. I came to run a blacksmith shop. I stayed to see if Duke August Adler would ever die. RIP Duke August Adler (1385–1497) The Blacksmith Legend.
I absolutely adore this game, despite its very glaring Early Access issues. You’re going to hear me say “but it’s Early Access” a LOT. Played the demo during Next Fest and I was hooked. $20 is a good price for it, especially in its current state. Ill say something a lot of reviewers are saying. If you have a low tolerance for “coming soon!” Features, or glitches, you should look elsewhere. The Guild earns its Early Access tag. It’s almost in alpha state. But despite this, it’s gorgeous (if you have a rig that can handle it) though the shadows and sunlight are still a bit rough around the edges (literally). I get those complaining about the lack of direct control of the character. As someone who never played any of the previous games, but has over 200 hours in Crusader Kings, this doesn’t bother me at all. Ditto on the complaints about automation (in its current state) and the marriage issue is really frustrating. If your heir is not already married when you take over (which is only going to be the case if your heir is 14 when you die) you’re pretty much stuck with older characters for a spouse. The AI is very aggressive about snatching up potential spouses right when they become eligible. It’s early access. I expect that will be tweaked. Taxes are implemented in the game but they don’t go into the city coffers. So if you want to use the city budget for anything, get elected fast and use it early. Adjusting taxes is in the game but doesn’t do anything right now. Again. Early Access. It’s coming. Just not in there yet. A lot of what has me excited for more is what I can see is coming (the dev helpfully marks the feature as coming soon in game) but also what COULD be coming. I know it’s a mistake to think that way with Early Access but I can’t help it as I play. I’ll think “oh I hope they add this”. Overall, the criticism is very fair (except those complaining about lack of direct player control. The devs told people about that from the start). The game is pretty bare bones. But what we have so far is excellent. I’m super addicted and I can’t wait to play more and see the game filled in more. Last Train Home was excellent. This is the same devs, so I have faith in them as long as THQ doesn’t get in their way. Looking forward to the journey!
THQ Nordic is part of Embracer Group. Their Q2 fiscal quarter runs April-September. Just squeezing a few EA sales out for that financial report. It's a good start. But the game is practically in an Alpha stage. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you understand how much work this game needs to be fully-functional. Just get the Demo and save your money for now. What's in the game is in a promising state. For example, you can see inside your workshops again! Praise the Lord. But, core features are missing that will limit your enjoyment. For example, despite their EA release announcement, the feature where you hover over an item and it tells you its selling price at nearby markets -- it was marked as "coming soon" in the tutorial. Also, there's no cart management or automation features. The game is nothing but a click-fest without cart management and simple automation. Will quickly overwhelm you once you have more than one business or cart to handle. Also, this part *is* advertised, but bears a mention: You can't just control your guys in town and go talk to people. They said the focus here is on the businesses now, not on the individuals. You can find your guy in town, but you can't manually move him. Like if you want to court a lady, you can't just find your guy, click him, find a single lady in town, click her and interact. No, you have to click into your portrait, find where your courtship target is listed, click her portrait, and select it thru menus. A lack of direct interaction with the city pulls the player right out of the immersion. If this is the direction that this game develops into, it will not sell. I guarantee it. There's nothing immersive about playing a dynasty head that you can't directly control. At the end of the day, the thumbs up is based on the "Day 1 EA" handicap -- for the state it's currently in, it's not bad. It's promising. But if you're tight on cash, add this to your wishlist and check back in about 6 months. GTA6 is coming out in November anyway. You'll probably be busy.
