A fun RTS TD game. I've glanced through a lot of negative reviews and most of the points they brought up have since been fixed. They added mid-run saving, (limited) rerolls for buildings and artifacts, options to banish certain rewards from being offered, they rebalanced some of the units & advisors etc.
This is a defense roguelike game, where you build up an economy that also produces units to defend your town from waves of enemies. The gimmick is that despite having a 5x5 grid to build structures on, only the ones in your "gaze" actually function. Since most resource producing buildings are temporary, you'll be constantly changing the layout of your town, changing with what you need and unlock and use up. Individual runs can take up to an hour. The game does a great job of constantly having you change up your grid of buildings, and that is where most of the fun comes from. On low to mid levels of the game it is actually very easy to shuffle things around, so you get to experiment a lot. The actually combat is very simple, but you do get more and more control over your unit composition. Runs are unfortunately pretty long so can feel like quite a commitment, but on the positive end there is plenty of meta upgrades and variety to keep you playing. The maps all have their own unique mechanics to spice things up, and some of the advisors you pick completely change your playstyle. Overall there is plenty of reason to play again and again. The art is pretty unique and interesting... sometimes. The splash screens in the game and some of the character portraits are really stand out, hinting at a weird and whimsical world. However you don't really see or feel that during the game. You'll mostly be playing with generic pixel art peasants and wheat fields. The music is pretty good but there is not much in the way of sound effects or sound design. Overall the game is solid. I actually wish there was more reason to grind, maybe a campaign or story to push you forward, because as is, even if you are into the game you'll just keep escalating until you are kind of done. It takes a bit to fully understand the game, so onboarding may take some time, but that is more of a testament to its uniqueness than a criticism. Bottomline, if you enjoy economy, management style games you'll like this.
I have 100% Completion on this game including the DLC. If that isn't enough of a recommendation then let me say this: This game has a fun and unique spin on tower defense. No one strategy is the key, but there are extremely strong strategies. I will say Meta-Progression really lends itself to more success. All the various Kings and their powers are neat and make them all fun in their own right (I am a Saladin and Xerxes enjoyer) Thanks so much for a true delight Hypnohead!
In one life, I was a ruthless leader, leading a civilization of drunk madmen whipped into submission — my assassins hiding amongst them. Then I was a powerful necromancer, turning the corpses of my enemies into loyal allies. I've been a merry peaceful king, with a magical army of unicorns, bees, and geese. I have so much respect for The King is Watching, being a bite-sized game that took a very simple idea and elaborated on it with interesting mechanics and emergent storytelling. What I admire most is how the design decisions relate to the storytelling; the king's powers, the cost of each unit, their abilities... it was really thoughtfully put together. The range in difficulty is great; it can be easy and relaxing, or extremely tactical and challenging, depending on what you prefer. I also really enjoy the skill tree, although as I approach end-game I find myself longing for more. The pixel art is beautiful, and I love the animations. The only thing I find myself longing for is better music and even more levels and progression. Definitely worth checking out, and I hope the developers continue to expand on this further.
This game is not easy. This game is not for people looking to chill while watching a show or to relax. Its frustrating. It will make you mad. I have put almost 25 hours in and am still no better then when I started it. Once you invest so much time into it, you feel you must keep doing it to try and show it who is boss. It is...it is the boss. You will die a lot. That being said, it is a fun game and well made. I play a round or 2 a day as each round takes about an hour. Its fun leveling up and getting stuff unlocked, but so far nothing has helped me get much better. lol. Great game to waste some hours on. If you don't mind losing 90% of the time, check it out.
