the knightling is what i would affectionately describe as a gamecube or ps2 game. vibrant with colors, restrained in its scope but fantastic in its execution and gameplay, with a ton of heart to back it up. don't be too fooled by the open-world tag or how people discuss this game : at its core, the knightling offers a map with the usual suspects (towers, sidequests, collectibles) but it's all very restrained. you aren't going to do 200 sided quests. you aren't going to collect 500 artifacts. you aren't going to activate 75 towers. it offers a concise experience, with a focused narrative and a strong layer of charm to tie it all together, with some fantastic movement and fun platforming. as a weaker point i would highlight the combat - though i had no personal issue with it and found it serviceable (and even enjoyable) - but the average person will expect some epic combat, especially based off the trailers. while you can pull some cool moves, your arsenal is limited even with upgrades, and you are not about to pull combo clips to put in a youtube compilation. it has more in common with something like zelda than devil may cry. with all that said, playing it on steam deck wasn't too great - performance isn't too hot on that front. a strong recommendation if you can temper your expectations and aren't expecting a 200 hours game. a shame it did not seem to get more visiblity than it seemed to...!

It is charming, though uneven, and has a frustrating lack of QOL features but I still liked this game despite significant flaws. The aesthetics and the dialog animations are cute, the writing is pretty good and getting around the world can be fun. In battle, parrying and juggling can be fun. The difficulty is wildly inconsistent, though. Some enemies can be read and parried reliably but other enemies are idle one frame and without any tells and from 15 feet away are suddenly the next frame at you with a hitbox. At least you can just hold the shield to block and wait for an attack then retaliate but that's not fun. The game also decides some enemies are intangible and your hits just clip through them like ghosts (they do make a weak dodge animation) and you're forced to use your special attack or parry. The design idea could be fine but it's really deflating when your hits "connect" but just don't do anything. The map is atrocious. Scrolling on gamepad is excruciatingly slow to the point where it is essentially not viable so I had to keep picking up the mouse. Even then it's pretty pointless because you can buy upgrades that show things like treasure maps, and there's a count for how many you've found and how many remain, but the icons on the map look the same either way. Fast travel is extremely limited and it's unclear when/how the spots unlock. Why can't I fast travel to each watchtower? Lastly, there's a companion you eventually get. I liked the voice acting and most of the writing but for some reason they decided to make them utter worthless nonsense when you're navigating or idling (such as while looking around to figure out a puzzle). The utterances do not add anything, are irrelevant and get annoying quickly. There's other nuisances but I've already detracted so much so I'll just reiterate I still recommend this game as it is charming, has likable characters and decent writing and can be fun to run and slide around in. I hope they make a sequel and address this issues holding this back from a glowing recommendation.

Giving this a thumbs up, but only half-heartedly because I feel like a thumbs down would be too harsh, and I do realise that maybe this game just isn't 100% for me. If you like open world games like Genshin, where you go around, beating stuff up, and collecting stuff, you should enjoy this. The world looks nice, and the shield mobility can make going around feel quite enjoyable. But unfortunately I did feel myself having to force myself through the game's 2nd half. -A lot of the side quests feel incredibly generic and fetch questy, so I ended up just mashing through the dialogue. -The game gives you the mobility to explore in fun ways, and you can have skyrim-like moments of climbing up a mountain that would've seemed impossible. But this game isn't built with sequence breaking in mind, so if you ever go anywhere you aren't supposed to, the game will quickly bring you to a halt and drag you back to where you were supposed to be, which can be a bit of a mood killer. -The game's first act has a really fun zelda-esque dungeon. It introduces a puzzle mechanic, expands on it, and then gives you a boss. It was a pretty good dungeon and I was expecting there to be many more throughout the game, each introducing new puzzle mechanics. But that did not happen. -Getting off a successful parry feels nice, and it gives you a big edge in battle, so you actually feel compelled to do it. But some parry timing can be a bit odd, and from what I understood, if I do perfect timing, every move should be parriable, but I don't think that actually is the case in game, and I don't think there is any way to differentiate which closing red circles can be parried and which can't. This on top of the fact that some hits in the game will just 1 hit you, or leave you stun locked into a combo that will kill you, is a pain. -At a certain point in the story you will reach a new area, but this area feels so damn big and not interesting enough to be deserving of the time it takes to traverse. On top of that, the game is quite stingy with fast travel points. It has the zelda botw towers for expanding your map, but only the major towns become fast travel points. And there aren't many of them. None of this is completely horrible, I am enjoying this game, it's just not as good as I wanted it to be. So if you're looking for an open world game with some fun shield surfing, paragliding, and parrying focused combat, then this is for you.

Charming but lots of issues. Major performance problems, good ol baked in stutter. No keybinding options, dodge locked to Left Alt lmfao Combat is almost good, but they gave enemies parries and you will get oneshot during unstoppable animations. Ripost is forced after parry and takes like 4 seconds lol If you get the stutter to go away, (turning basically all the settings off got rid of it for the most part) its decent enough. some other bugs like map objective progress not tracking, and some bugged quest objective waypoints.

Played the demo during next fest, I knew what I was getting myself into. And that is just an amazing game. Twirlbound has accomplished what very few games nowadays fail to accomplish and it is simple: Make me feel like i'm actually playing a video game for entertainment. Let me have simple fun, make me feel like when I was a child starting up my gamecube. The game's art style makes me feel that sense of wonder you only got when you booted your very first game. The game's soundtrack is whimsical and relaxing, the composer's way of telling you: we're going on an adventure. The game has one major weak point though, its combat. The game shines when you can go around the map, slide and fly around on your shield and do some random quests for NPCs. The moment you start fighting, it becomes a slug. Trying to time your parries and blows to stun people (or randomly zooming in to a red barrel and blowing yourself up when you never meant to be near that barrel), then when they're stunned, you need to manually remove their armor with a series of buttons in the middle of a fight. This is not fun. And as you progress in the game, battles only get worse with more people more frequently. So please Twirlbound.. You so clearly love your game. Do something about this because this fighting is very much the definition of not fun.
