13 games worth of investments starting to payoff in the Horizon I usually play Trails games first in Japanese and then replay them in English when they release, and have played all the games twice but this is the first game that I actually waited for the English PC release to play because I didn't have my PS4 anymore. It was 3 long years of wait, but here it is finally and it was worth it. Trails beyond the Horizon is a great Trails game that finally moves the story forward after the disappointment that Daybreak 2 was. This time we start to see the payoff that we've been waiting for in the story with many surprising and unexpected events and several improvements in many areas, especially in the animations. Horizon left me satisfied with how it developed its story overall and made me even more thirsty for the next game. I was honestly very worried about the series after Daybreak 2 because that game did not move the story forward at all and everything we did was basically negated by the time leaping stuff. Now in Horizon, everything starts to make sense, the story moves forward, a lot of connections to past games happen and a lot of new secrets of the continent is revealed. It is a game that starts really slow, but then develops a lot near the end. Kevin's route was the most interesting and where the biggest reveals happened. It was great to see him back as the Heretic Hunter, working together with the picnic gang and they had the best sense or humor but also seriousness and a darker tone, great pacing and reveals about more of the background stuff happening in the story. Rean's route was the least interesting of all in my opinion but it was much better than just an excuse to have a fan-favorite character in the game; in his route he explores more about the surface stuff related to the rocket launch and also gets to finally have his fateful encounter with his master that has been teased for long. Van's route takes the majority of the game time. In the beginning it is very slow paced, but after the middle it starts to develop with interesting reveals and then towards the end it is where the game is all about and we get all the lore that we've always wanted, big reveals, big surprises, unexpected events, and is also where all the dots connect. The final developments of the game were peak Trails experience with a lot of things and I believe this is the game that will make us think the most about what's happening in Zemuria, what's going to happen in the next games and do a lot of theory crafting because even though a lot has been revealed, almost nothing was actually explained and the biggest reveals happened in the last chapter, which leaves everything for the next game. Horizon also saw big improvements in a lot of areas and the animations are the true stars of the show both in cutscenes and in combat. It was incredibly enjoyable to watch the scenes and in combat it made everything dramatically more dynamic and fun compared to previous games even though the core attacks are the same, showing how much the extra camera work and effects can make a huge difference. On top of this, a lot of new mechanics have been added to the combat system making it very complex which is awesome, but I think they did not balance the difficulty well to compensate these additions as there are many unbalanced battles with spongy enemies and annoying mechanics but at the same time there are battles that are very easy. There is again the grind dungeon named Grim Garten. I am not a big fan of these type of dungeons, but it is much improved, interesting, faster to complete and the reward at the end for completing it is well worth it as it is actually main story content with one of the big reveals of the series despite being optional. PC port is perfect and made by the legendary Durante. Runs flawlessly and has incredibly sharp graphics thanks to the latest DLSS4.5 technology already implemented in the game on top of tons of graphics improvements and features that are exclusive to the PC version. It's a beautiful game with excellent graphical quality and optimization as expected from Durante. Trails beyond the Horizon is a high point in the series in my opinion and the story that took me 75 hours to beat is where is shines. It starts very very slow, but at around the middle things start to unfold in a great pace and at the end we get a lot of lore developments that left me amazed and I need some time to organize my thoughts to both understand what has been revealed and try to think what's going to happen in the next game as Horizon left me with more questions than answers. The story is unfolding in an amazing direction and we are finally starting to understand all the secrets about the world and is where we are getting the payoff for having invested our time in 13 games so far. There's absolutely nothing like Trails and what Falcom is doing in the industry, it is certainly an unique experience that cannot be described in a few words and only those who had the dedication to play through all the games will know and we are finally getting all the payoff for that investment. Horizon also includes several improvements with more gameplay mechanics making it more dynamic, the Grim Garten is more interesting and the animations is really where Falcom seems to have put most of their work because they are really good. There are a few areas in which I think they could improve like the gameplay system itself and the balancing of sponge enemies, a few nonsense moments here and there in the story that could've been better or implemented in another way, the beginning of the game being incredibly slow and of course, the soundtrack. Music is good and I liked it, but there's only 1 or 2 tracks that are really bangers and the rest felt normal. Even then, none of these really impacted the overall experience in a significant way, and the developments in the story towards the end are so great that these minor flaws can be easily ignored because the highs are so great. Horizon is not a perfect game and not the best of the series, but is definitely one of the highs and the one containing the most reveals, one that we feel the payoff of having invested in the series for so long, and also the one that left us wanting for even more. Starting 2026 with Trails beyond the Horizon was incredible and I'm sure what's yet to come will be amazing. Even though I wrote this review completely spoiler free, I am now ready to spend days theory crafting and discussing the lore of the game with full spoilers.
