The Occultist is a psychological horror walking simulator with many puzzles and several minor stealth sections with vengeful ghosts. The story involves your character arriving to an eerie desolate Island, in search of your lost father. Places of exploration include a various houses, a hospital, an orphanage, a cemetary, a circus, and a huge manor. Primary gameplay involves exploration and using an occult "Pendulum" that can perform four occult mechanics. Your "Pendulum" can see items from another dimension, reverse time, send a magical bird to collect items in the far distance, and move swarms of rats for various purposes. The game took me approximately 7 hours to complete. + The atmosphere and visuals are gorgeous. + Excellent music and sound design in general. + The voice acting is superb. The main character is voiced by Doug Cockle, aka "The Witcher". + The story is original and interesting. +/- The enemies in the game are a mixed bag. Several of the ghosts are very creepy, while others are goofy and poorly designed. - A few of the puzzles are annoying, without proper direction. - Long stretches of the game are tedious and dare I say, borderline boring at times. - In dire need of a chapter select after beating the game to mop up achievements and collectibles. - Nitpick: There should be a way to put your pendulum hand up and down. This hand is always up in the game, and this is not realistic. No person would every walk around 100% of the time with their hand up in the air like that. Visually annoying. Especially when you want to take screenshots of the environment, or just walk around with a nice unobstructed view. - Despite the environments looking stellar, the character models, enemy models, and bosses look poor as if they are from the PS3 era. This game shoots for the stars with a big budget approach to the genre. However, the lack of "fun" interesting gameplay, or exceptional puzzles, holds the game back from greatness. Overall: 7/10

When the tutorial told me I could press spacebar to look back whilst running, I knew this game wasn't for me and uninstalled it immedietly cause why do I wanna see what is chasing me??? KIDDING (but kinda not, I am never pressing that button >.>) I would best describe this game as an investigative horror walking sim due to it's very linear gameplay. That being said, it is by no means boring. You do just follow set paths but the eerie environments are very immersive, encouraging you to really take your time as you gather clues and solve puzzles. Pay attention to your pendulum. There are so many hidden things to discover that thicken the plot and keep your interest piqued, despite the perhaps slower paced gameplay. The crescendoing music has me on my toes and the voice acting is well done. This is one that horror junkies and chickens like myself can ease into and enjoy. Anyways, godspeed and don't press spacebar!!

I got to say, I enjoyed playing this game a lot more than I thought I would. I have never been one to be too fond of puzzles, games just have a habit of throwing you into a puzzle wishing you good luck. However this game actually makes the puzzles not too hard, however not too simple. I love how they have a way to not completely leave you in the dark, you have your handy dandy book to always remind you what you've found, and hint what you need to do with it. I'm not finished quite yet however I'm close to the end and up until this moment It's been a lot of fun. Great scares, great story, great music, great graphics, and puzzles that feel so rewarding once completed. 10/10 !

Delicious dread, doom and gloom! SUPERB atmosphere with the one and only Doug Cockle (the only man together with Henry Cavill who can say HE IS GERALT OF RIVIA) voicing the main character/narrator......For little more than 20 bucks?.....A fair and proper deal!. Oh....The Occultist is a "adventurous" history driven walking simulator......Im pointing out this because a lot of PsEuDo-InTeLlLeCTuals actually complained about the lack of "action"......Are you even aware not every game under the sun has to be a FPS? Right?.....
