Used to play this on my ipod as a kid, and it was the closest to an open world rpg you could get on IOS at the time. So I have a LOT of nostalgia for this game. I think it stands up to time, it's a very charming game made by only a couple people and its suprisingly expansive. I remember many of the quests off by heart.
Every now and then I get the urge to pick up an old school first-person grid RPG. A lot of them are what's ignominiously known as 'blobbers' - that is, a party of characters who all move as one first-person 'blob'. Think of something like Might & Magic or Wizardry. The Quest isn't a blobber, but it does feel resolutely old school. If anything, it's a little how I'd imagine an Elder Scrolls game if it was on a grid and made in 1993. It's not turn-based, so enemies will come at you and attack you in real time, but you move by stepping along distinct chunks of a grid. The gameplay is relatively open world - not a huge, sprawling landscape, but more of the Paradise Killer situation of being open within reasonably compact parameters. I don't remember all that much about the plot - the game is called The Quest; if there's nothing notable enough in the story to yield a title, it's not a huge surprise if it's not very memorable - but I was invested enough in what I was doing to see it all through to the end. If you miss that distinctive feeling of old RPGs where you would be handed a vague objective and then sent on your way, or if the idea of a more modest-sized Elder Scrolls: Arena with grid movement appeals, then The Quest is for you. I enjoyed it. It's (say it with me, regular readers) a bit too long for my tastes, but it absolutely did scratch that old school RPG itch.
This is a mobile-ported dungeon crawler, bringing with it the cons you'd expect from such a port - namely very simple combat (it's essentially *click* *click* *click* to attack with your weapon of choice, and then *gulp* health potions) and a UI with large icons generally used for touchscreens. Nevertheless, it's a short dungeon romp and the game shines in its quests, generally offering a twist and having more than one solution, even if it's just a choice between A and B dialogue option or between Kill X or Y. The story was interesting enough to keep me engaged for 16 hours. Given its low price and being a short game, I recommend this if you're looking for a "coffee break" turn based dungeon crawler.
