Introduction: The Three Kingdoms: Rebirth – 三国：起死回生 (Sānguó: Qǐsǐhuíshēng) A game set in the pre–Three Kingdoms / late Eastern Han period of Chinese history. You take on the role of a general — a knowledgeable strategist who successfully assassinates Dong Zhuo (however, your true identity will affect an important plot point; it is recommended to play without spoilers). However, afterward, with many branches and different choices, the timeline will become chaotic, making it difficult for you to rely on real history to predict what will happen next. With many different choices, you will be led to historical events that occur at different points. Gameplay: With 6 different female leads to choose from, and a small amount of QTE that is not very significant, each choice can lead to endings such as defeat in battle, capture, etc. There are a great number of story branches tied to your choices. The affection level of each heroine will also affect the path you take, the army you have, and the inevitable ending. Story: At the beginning of your journey, you will take on a mission to infiltrate Cao Cao’s camp. From there, you will rescue Zhen Mi (甄宓) — Cao Cao’s treasure — and then continue your journey to build your hegemony, form alliances, build an army, and compete for control of the world. As mentioned above, depending on your choices and the affection levels of each heroine, you will be led to many different story branches: ruling the world, retiring to the countryside, being defeated and captured, etc. With a story interwoven with schemes, grudges, love and hatred, espionage, relationships with beauties, and traps, every choice will shape your image. Choose carefully — sometimes loyalty, honesty, or not being ruthless enough can also lead to your failure. 6 Female Leads: 1. Zhong Chenyao – 蔡昭姬 (Cai Zhaoji) Your wife, also known as your main wife, the most talented woman of her time — the daughter of Cai Yong. She supports you from the beginning, always waiting for you even while clearly knowing where you are, without resentment or regret, willing to accept other women. She accepts waiting for you in chaotic times, a strong emotional support for you, a confidant who understands all your secrets. Among countless other beauties, will you choose to stay loyal to her? Or follow your heart? 2. Wang Xingchen – 王星辰 – 甄宓 (Zhen Fu) The Luo River Goddess Zhen Mi, one of the most famous beauties of the Three Kingdoms era, later the wife of Cao Pi — the first emperor of Wei, later Empress Wenzhao. In the game, she is rumored to have the fate of an empress; obtaining her means obtaining the world. She is Cao Cao’s treasure, and in reality, what matters most about her is the accumulated wealth of the Zhen family, rich enough to rival a nation. If you cannot win her love, you will not be able to obtain the strongest army (a small spoiler) to conquer the world. Sweet, seductive, but not naive — instead full of schemes and danger. Can you win her love? 3. Zou Jiajia – 邹佳佳 – 小乔 (Xiao Qiao) Xiao Qiao, a young healer you rescue from Cao Cao’s prison. At first, she does not trust you, but after overcoming many hardships together, your kindness and care gradually build a sincere love between you. Will you be willing to abandon the world and wander with her? 4. Da Qiao – 大乔 A new face in the FMV scene (actor name not yet identified, will update later). The beautiful widow of Jiangdong, with an almost fairy-like presence. At first, she does not want to say a word to you. However, after using her divine power to see what kind of person you are — a savior and her destined one — she places her trust in you. Will you risk everything? 5. Sun Shangxiang – 孙尚香 The princess of Eastern Wu: strong personality, powerful, and well-loved. As the daughter of a powerful family, she is well-trained, holds power, has personality, admirable qualities, and strategic thinking. In history, she became Liu Bei’s wife to form an alliance between Shu and Wu. Here, her role is similar — an important link in the plans of both factions. Is her love for you real? Or just political calculation? 6. Zou Su – 邹素 (spoiler warning) The sweet maid you accidentally purchase is actually a spy planted by Cao Cao to sabotage and destroy your alliance and forces. Depending on how you treat her, you will reach different endings. Can your sincerity and kindness influence her? Or is everything just an act without real feelings? 7. HuiNu – 夜奴 (Gray Sleeve) - Ren Hongmin A personal guard, assassin, and death warrior — that is what we know about her. Ordered by Wang Yun, everything she does is loyalty, willing to sacrifice for you. As she says, sacrificing for one’s master is natural. Can we feel sympathy? Is it a lesson — the truth that this is a chaotic and cruel world? Hopefully there will be a DLC where she is rewarded, and we learn who she really is — her name, age, and origin. Graphics / Sound: Perfect audio. Each piece of music is dedicated to each heroine and her story. Each character has their own highlight scenes. The most impressive for me are Cai Zhaoji, Xiao Qiao, and Ye Nu’s sacrifice. Every costume and detail has meaning, highlighting their beauty. Conclusion: If you are looking for a game to explore history, warfare, and beauties of the Three Kingdoms era, this is a game worth trying and experiencing. A worthy payoff after a whole year of waiting — worth every penny spent. Dozens of endings, vast branching paths, hidden stories, and rare achievements — every playthrough is a new experience. Such a fantastic experience! One of my favorite FMVs for this year for sure! English subtitles especially genders can be improved, of course. Loved the acting, the cast, and the expanded routes. Didn't expect so many endings as well. Quality and of course production was really good, and I really enjoyed my time playing!
With such a strong cast and lore, Three Kingdoms: Rebirth should have been so much more. Hamstrung by a muddled story, thin characters, and AI videos, only some genre veteran actresses and a huge final chapter save this game from being a middling experience. The game begins with you getting transported back in time to the Three Kingdoms era where you assume the role of a General. There is not much explanation about the conflict or participants, so players with prior knowledge will have a huge advantage. Those unfamiliar with the period, like me, may find the story hard to latch onto. The plot jumps between characters and locations enough to make you check if your health insurance covers whiplash. Outside the 7 love interests, there are countless bit characters that have nearly meaningless scenes. There are so many that it is impossible to do any of them justice in the game’s short runtime—the first run through will take under 3 hours. In addition to these skin-deep characters, the game is rarely funny. And there are several poor AI videos that depict large battles. The love interests are the biggest drawcard because three are played by actresses that were in the original Love is All Around. This trio are the main romances, since they appear early and remain involved. Zhong Chenyao and Zou Jiajia, as Cai Zhaoji and Xiao Qiao respectively, put together excellent performances and are the best choice for romantics. Wang Xingchen is fine as Zhen Fu too, but the camera spends a comically absurd about of time focusing on her ample cleavage. Most other love interests don’t get enough screen time. You can count the scenes for your death warrior, Huinu, on one mutilated hand. Sun Shanxiang appears more, but her warrior-princess shtick turns her into a love-struck klutz. Da Qiao is devoted but a blank slate. So only the main romances have passable depth; the rest are just there to fill your harem. Chapter 6 saves the game. It is the equivalent of a stay of execution seconds before midnight. This final chapter is massive and makes up more than half the game. There are long branching paths based on choices related to armies, items, and relationships. We love choice and consequence! Even if it creates a messier narrative and the timeline menu lags. There are a few good endings to see, including more appearances by the lesser romance options. It really does alleviate the suffering. Players need to be clear what they’re getting with Three Kingdoms: Rebirth and it is not a cohesive story. Characters are spread thinner than rice-paper and scenes jump around more than a Kangaroo on meth. If you adore the actresses, or are prepared to dance around the timeline like a maniac to unlock a huge final chapter, then the game will earn its pass mark. But, even then, players should temper their expectations if they value characterisation or plot.
choice of english subs and dub (best for first time playthroughs to reduce need to read what they are saying), or stick with original chinese voices (best in following playthroughs for all the different paths and endings). 75gb of very good quality interactive fmv, in a few places the voices (mostly the female ones) can become distressingly weird. If youre a fan of interactive movies / visual novels, this is fantastic.
