This is a conditional recommendation. While seasoned point-and-click adventure gamers may find a significant percentage of the puzzles and dialogue obnoxious, and I did encounter a few minor glitches, the game is visually and aurally a work of art with a compelling story. You can really see all the love that went into it. Pros: -Definitely a memorable game and story. In its best moments, it is like playing through a wonderful fairytale book. -Gorgeous, incredible, hand-drawn artwork. Some of the scenery is among my favorite in adventure gaming, and I've played this genre for decades. -Beautiful music. I will listen to the soundtrack while doing other things. -Some excellent animations and cutscenes. -Some of the puzzles are good or even great. -Some of the characters and dialogue are legitimately funny, and some interactions between the protagonist and his pet are touching. -The voice acting for MOST characters is actually very good. Cons: -Some glitches. (See the end of this review for troubleshooting notes.) -Some puzzles are nonsense that you will probably need to brute-force. No big deal if you're the type to try everything to experience more dialogue/animations/etc., but annoying if you prioritize logical puzzles. -Other puzzles are reasonable, but their hints are too obvious. -The protagonist's voice is annoying, and it's the one you hear most often. -Voice aside, the self-loathing protagonist took a long time to grow on me. For the first half of the game, I really didn't care for him. -Some animations are quite low in frame rate, which is odd, because others are very smooth. This disparity can be awkward. -A few dialogue branches remain available even after the progression of events makes them out-of-place. -The ending is polarizing. Some will like it, others will not. -Too much unnecessary "flavor" dialogue. Glitches (at least on my modern Windows 11 PC): -I couldn't get the game running in full-screen mode at 4k through the game menu itself, nor the Visionaire configuration tool. I ended up running it in a window and using the program Borderless Gaming to get around this, which worked like a charm. -When unplugging my headphones from the audio jack, all dialogue suddenly started auto-skipping until I restarted the game. -In some areas, the camera view is meant to auto-scrolls when you walk to the edge of the screen. However, in certain areas, the scrolling wouldn't activate until I hit alt+tab. -In one part of chapter four, I activated the solution to a "puzzle," but the game wouldn't process it until I used the same alt+tab trick. Overall: If you prioritize consistently reasonable puzzles with hints that are neither too obscure nor too obvious, and/or consistently meaningful well-written dialogue, you will probably find plenty to be annoyed by here, If you prioritize memorable, artistic gaming experiences like I do, The Whispered World is worthwhile, especially on sale. The hand-crafted beauty is just breathtaking at times, and I really want to play the sequel ("Silence') now.

I've only played the regular version before and it's an enjoyable point n click adventure from the "revival era" of the early 2010's. Art style is easily its strongest point, but animations are a bit to be desired tbh. Story is fine, but Sadwick's voice is a bit anoying though, sounds like Adam Sandler :D This Special Edition, from what I can see only adds voice comentary and achievements. Runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck straight out of the box.

The game has great visuals (for the time) and art style. Great music. However, it is an old-school adventure, and I would highly recommend having the guide walkthrough during the game.

This is a cute and funny puzzle solving game that, in the end, turns out to be a very touching story. All mouse controlled, a plus for me. You just have to learn how to use the mouse in the beginning by holding the left click long enough to bring up the mini-menu on an item. It may seem simple enough to solve the puzzles, but honestly I don't see how anyone can play it without the use of a guide.
