I've only played the regular version before and it's an enjoyable point n click adventure from the "revival era" of the early 2010's. Art style is easily its strongest point, but animations are a bit to be desired tbh. Story is fine, but Sadwick's voice is a bit anoying though, sounds like Adam Sandler :D This Special Edition, from what I can see only adds voice comentary and achievements. Runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck straight out of the box.

The Whispered World Special Edition, developed and published by Daedalic Entertainment, is a remastered version of the studio’s early point-and-click classic that showcases their trademark approach to narrative-driven adventures. Set in the melancholic fantasy world of Silentia, the game follows the reluctant clown Sadwick and his loyal caterpillar companion Spot as they embark on a journey shaped by dreams, prophecy, and a growing sense of impending doom. From the start, the tone is both whimsical and tragic, presenting a story that is more contemplative than lighthearted, drawing players into a narrative where atmosphere and mood take priority over traditional action. What immediately sets The Whispered World apart is its hand-painted visual style. Every scene is beautifully illustrated, with lush backdrops and layered animations that transform static landscapes into vibrant, living environments. The Special Edition preserves this artistry while adding small refinements that make the world more polished without losing the charm of the original. From the eerie forests to the crumbling ruins, the game’s settings evoke a fairy tale quality, with subtle details that reward careful observation. The parallax effect in scrolling scenes gives a sense of depth that keeps the player immersed, and combined with the expressive character animations, the game’s art direction remains one of its strongest achievements. Spot, Sadwick’s caterpillar sidekick, plays a key role not only in the story but also in the gameplay. Spot can morph into different forms, such as flattening into a bridge or inflating like a balloon, each ability serving as a puzzle-solving tool. This adds variety to the otherwise traditional point-and-click structure, where progression involves combining items, experimenting with inventory objects, and interacting with the world’s strange inhabitants. While some puzzles are inventive and satisfying, others fall into the genre’s infamous “moon logic” category, requiring leaps of reasoning that can frustrate players and stall progress. Even with the Special Edition’s added quality-of-life features like skippable mini-games, the puzzle design remains uneven and at times overly opaque. The audio design enhances the game’s melancholy atmosphere. The orchestral soundtrack ranges from hauntingly beautiful to quietly whimsical, always reinforcing the emotional tone of the narrative. The voice acting, however, is more divisive. Sadwick’s English voice in particular has drawn criticism for being too whiny, which can undercut the character’s sympathetic qualities. While the supporting cast fares better, some lines overlap or feel poorly timed, creating moments that break immersion. The Special Edition doesn’t fully resolve these issues, though the inclusion of developer commentary adds an intriguing layer of behind-the-scenes insight that fans of the genre may find rewarding. Pacing is deliberately slow, giving players time to absorb the atmosphere, explore conversations, and reflect on Sadwick’s situation. This contemplative style is one of the game’s defining qualities, but it may not appeal to those looking for a faster or more dynamic adventure. At around 8 to 12 hours in length, the journey is substantial enough to feel complete, but its rhythm often depends on how quickly players can overcome some of the more challenging or unintuitive puzzles. The Special Edition does at least smooth some rough edges, but the core structure remains rooted in the traditional adventure design of its time. Ultimately, The Whispered World Special Edition is a game that thrives on mood and artistry rather than flawless mechanics. Its story of a clown burdened with prophecy resonates in its quiet sadness, and the visual design is among the most striking of its genre. While uneven puzzle design and inconsistent voice acting prevent it from being a masterpiece, its emotional weight and unique atmosphere make it a memorable experience for fans of thoughtful, slower-paced adventures. For players willing to look past its frustrations, it delivers moments of genuine beauty and poignancy that linger long after the credits roll. Rating: 7/10

This is a cute and funny puzzle solving game that, in the end, turns out to be a very touching story. All mouse controlled, a plus for me. You just have to learn how to use the mouse in the beginning by holding the left click long enough to bring up the mini-menu on an item. It may seem simple enough to solve the puzzles, but honestly I don't see how anyone can play it without the use of a guide.

I absolutely loved the story. There are games with harder puzzles, but the art style and wit of the characters made up for that.
