April 2026
Because the gimmick of the game is so punishingly front and center, I wanted to push some positivity about the art and music. The platicpunk aesthetic they've developed for this game is 10/10 dynamite. There's tons of little objects, details and moments that build to an aesthetic that I would love to see in more projects, both in this world and in others. It feels like an opening text that could have inspired tons of other media to take inspiration. The levels are brimming with little details: plasticy record players with twisted plumbing amplifiers, plastic guitars with plastic strings, a wide variety of plastic fashion, and a soundtrack that seemingly makes use of plastic instruments (and has some great synth work to boot). Plastemia, as a concept, is captivating, believable, and terrifying. I really think the folks behind the art and music direction created something groundbreaking in Tides of Tomorrow. I wish it were getting its debut in a more successful game. As others have said, the story and gameplay both feel undercooked. There's neat ideas. Some of the Tidewalker puzzles are fun. Some are like those early 3D movie gimmicks, where they throw junk at the screen just because 3D is in the title, and you already rented the glasses. Consistently, Tides of Tomorrow feels like a game that just needed way more feedback and revision. The foundations are all there. The execution is very lacking. I don't mind a walking simulator personally, and I've been happy to spend time in the game just for the aesthetic. But the gameplay basically only pretends to be more than a walking simulator. You're just doing chores until the next cutscene. And there's definitely scripted moments that have tried my patience, like finding the giant yellow button you know you'll have to press, then waiting 5 minutes for the NPCs to catch up and inevitably tell you to press it. Also, the game is pretty buggy, more than it should be. The systems break sometimes. A major character, early on, completely forgot they'd already met me, I guess because the narrative branch I was on changed for some reason. The boat fights are simple but weirdly fun. I actually quite enjoy them. The boat races are dog water. If this were an open-world plasticpirate RPG, it would be my new favorite game of all time. I recommend TOT on sale. Plasticpunk is, top to bottom, genius. If it had the gameplay of something like Outer Worlds, it would be a landmark success.

Cool idea, unfortunately it lacks the amount of content needed to justify the premise. Gameplay is mostly ok, the walking sim parts are broken up by some exploration, dialogues and sneaking - none of it is great, but it's serviceable enough. Unfortunately, the levels are basically the same no matter what "variation" you end up entering. On top of that, the choices you make don't matter at all most of the time because they just lead you to the same place anyway. Seeing what other people did and dealing with the world influenced by them is, again, a very cool idea, and they do some neat stuff with that (mystics asking for passwords, for example). Unfortunately, the cool stuff is maybe in 10% of content - everything else consists of barely different flavours of responses that lead to the same scenes, and it gets frustrating and random. I recommend it if you're looking for an experimental game while not minding that it ultimately fails to deliver a satisfying narrative. I'm glad it exists, but I quit around 50% completion because the story - the only thing it has going for it - just didn't keep me interested.

It's like Waterworld (1995) and Cyberpunk 2077 had a woke environmentalist love child, and despite some of the characters and writing leaving much to be desired, it's still a great game for some reason. 7604-1807 <--- My seed if you'd like to follow me but fair warning you will be playing the game on hard mode.

I’ve been waiting over a year for this game, and it absolutely delivered. I haven’t finished it yet, but I will update this review once I do. I’ve always enjoyed DigixArt’s games, especially Road 96 and 11-11: Memories Retold, and Tides of Tomorrow lived up to my expectations. The story is already interesting, but the visuals are on another level, absolutely beautiful. The choices you make will not only affect you but also the player who comes after you. You can interact with different characters, search for scraps, and buy ozen, or hope that the previous player has left you some. There are also minigames that influence your story as well. Even without finishing it yet, I can already tell this will be one of my favorite games of the year. Just an amazing experience. Thanks to the team for another masterpiece!
