Its a great game but probably one of my least favs from the series. as much as i do still love this game its alot of lara not grabbing onto ledges, jumping into holes instead of jumping onto pillars, falling on literally nothing or jumping to her death just cause she wants to and no clear pathing or where to go on most parts. The puzzles are very long and can be very confusing, so you will defo have to search up tutorials for it. Still would recommend tbh cause tomb raider is just peak overall, but instead id say play Legend cause that game is 10x better. its truly peak
In my mind this is the best Tomb Raider game. (though I haven't tried the more recent remake) The first series of six games is too clunky to play these days. The later games switched format to care more about scripted sequences and a little bit of open world gameplay, and are less about tight linear level design. This game has possibly the best exploration puzzles I have seen in any game. They're much more grounded than the later games (e.g. Shadow of the Tomb Raider starts you off with a crazy death-defying climb that just shows that the designers aren't taking things seriously any more) which also makes them more predictable. You can often look at a room and ask yourself "how the heck do I get up to that artifact?" and then actually work out a plan. The earlier games are too clunky for this, and the later games are too scripted. This game came out at a time when modern design had tightened controls, but games had not gone full hollywood yet, they still had a bit of that 90s design of just giving you one self-contained level after another.
Got back into TR franchise with the first remastered collection, beat the 2nd collection and now i'm working on the third trilogy of the series. I beat Legend and now I just beat Anniversary. First thing i'm going to say is if you loved the remastered collections, than this game Anniversary is a no brainer. Its exactly like those games but better and more refined. Idk how this game doesn't have the same exact critical reception as the remastered collection on steam!??? It's legit those games but better in every way, this is legitimately the closest thing to a modern day version of the original TR gameplay, what purists have been asking for decades. This game should have a 90% positive rating. It just doesn't make sense, knowing what ppl liked or disliked about the remastered collection, this game addresses it all. It can't be due to bugs, because I played the game on Steamdeck docked and the game run 100% flawless, not a single bug. Atleast nothing big enough for me to notice. Since this is a TR game mimicking the style of the first 6 games which were all puzzle-platformers, i'm going to compare this directly to them. Imo TR2 is the best installment out of the 6 original games. It has the best balance of everything of what you want from those games. My personal favorite is TR1, simply because its the only one that mixing in horror. TR1 was very much like Metroid, in where you're for the most part a lone protagonist navigating a isolated and dark world. Cause of that the atmosphere sets up alot of horror ambiance and set pieces, while also delivering quite a few jump scares. Later games abandon the horror elements in favor or more action focused narrative and a more blockbuster tone. Angel Of Darkness is a close tie to being my favorite OG TR simply because of its unique narrative that no other TR has done.(dark before the survivor trilogy brought back darker elements) With that said, Anniversary is clearly not only the best one out of all these games, but now also replaces TR1 and AOD as my personal favs. I would rank the games as follows according to best to least best(none are bad). 1. Anniversary 2. TR2 3. TR1/AOD 4. Revelations 5. TR3 6. Chronicles Now for a proper review, letting you know what to look for. Graphics let's get this out the way, graphics are clearly better than the remasters, even AOD. Thankfully this version is based on the HD update, so you still get some modernish polish. Controls. Idk what the reviews are smoking, if you like the modern controls from the remasters, than this game has those controls but WAY better and less jank. Idk how anyone can take issues with the controls, when its such an objective upgrade. I never once missed a jump, or fell off by mistake or anything. The game features an autograb that you can toggle, so maybe thats the issue? They had it off, idk. But walk off a ledge, she saves herself, you jump to an edge, she auto grabs. The other thing I love about Anniversary is the QOL update to her movement speed, holding Y/Triangle button on pad increases the speed of all her actions. She shimmies left/right on ledges too slow? Hold the button down the button and she accelerates and moves faster. Climbing ladder too slow? Hold the button down and she moves faster. This goes for almost everything including swimming. Camera. Not better or worse than remasters. Storytelling. This one got a huge upgrade. While all the TRs have a narrative, for the most part the OG 6 were light on story, while 2 and 3 def put in increase in the amount of storytelling they still for the most part, dialogueless games with a focus on gameplay. Revelations and AOD are the ones with the most focus on narrative, with AOD being the only one to actually give the narrative an equal importance to the gameplay and the only one to have a truly developed story before the 2 sequel trilogies came out. I would say in comparison OG TR1 is storyless in comparison to what this game does. Puzzles. Some of the series best puzzles, and a good reimagining of some of TR1 ones puzzles. Platforming. The series best(from the OG 6), no jank, no weird difficulty spike, just purely creatively and challenging without feeling tedious. Action. Now OG TR aren't action games, they are puzzle/platformers first and foremost. But each game however did increase the action segments and made some minor improvements to it, with AOD being the most action heavy one. Anniversary does a hybrid, it goes back to the less action and more exploration focused nature of TR1 while embracing alot of the QOL updates to the gunplay from later games and improving it even more for the few action encounters the game has. You can now properly change target aim and shoot, guns can be quickswapped, and there's a cool dodge move, that when you land a perfect dodge(similar to RE4R perfect parry) you get rewarded with a better outcome, in this case a free critical shot. Exploration. This game is very similar to RE1R or RE2R, it takes some old areas and adds new twists to it, introduces completely new areas that never existed, while a few get completely reimagined and changed. Content. Quite alot. After beating the game, you can either start over or quick travel to a level via stage selection and complete anything you didn't finish or miss. There 3 sets of collectable items, the usual find all main items score, the usual find the secret object score and a third new third one which is essentially find the even more secret object score. There's the level completion times score and the kill score. There's unlockable bonus content, and 10 unlockable outfits. Lastly there's a time trial mode to sink yourself into. All in all idk how this doesn't have the same positive steam score as the collections, when its better in every way. If you want more TR in the style of the first two OG trilogies with puzzles and not the action focused sequels, this is game is a must buy and a no brainer. Is the game perfect? No, its still has alot of classic TR tediousness, y'know what i'm talking about. Boring backtracking, or tedious check/save points, and some sloggy exploration/navigation for keys/puzzles. Thankfully all very minor. 9/10
This game is a remake of the original Tomb Raider game modernized for the systems at the time of its release with a story that is slightly modified to serve as a middle chapter of a new trilogy. While others criticize it heavily for its reinventions of the previous game I find it to be a refreshing update. The visuals are, obviously, more advanced and the gameplay flows more naturally. The thing that, rightfully, bothers others are the special moves that are needed in boss battles. I can certainly agree with that criticism but they don't take away the fun of this version.
