—Tomb Raider review— Rating: 10/10 The 1996 original that started it all. I normally keep my reviews short and simple to give a basic idea of what the game has to offer, but this deserves an ultimate review. Tomb Raider revolutionized gaming by introducing Lara Croft—one of the most iconic characters ever—and blending action-adventure, precise platforming, and puzzles into a groundbreaking 3D experience that inspired countless successors. Even nearly 30 years later, it remains genuinely fun and addictive. You get to pull off stylish acrobatic flips, blast wolves and mercenaries, and tackle deeply satisfying, often hours-long puzzles that deliver a huge sense of accomplishment when cracked. The exploration has you wandering vast, mysterious tombs, uncovering hidden relics and artifacts, and soaking in that pure thrill of discovery in ancient ruins. It has aged in spots—blocky polygons and dated textures look rough today, the infamous tank controls demand patience to master (and feel clunky at first), and it's easy to get lost in the large, maze-like level design—but that's all part of the charm of this game and what makes the experience so uniquely memorable. For me personally, the original Tomb Raider holds a special place: it's not just a great game, but the franchise that grew up with me, offering endless escapism during tough times. Modern players might struggle with the old-school design, so I strongly recommend the remastered version (with updated visuals/controls options) over the raw original—it's the perfect way to experience this classic without the biggest barriers. Still an absolute must-try for any adventure fan!

In the tutorial section there are only voice advice; no explanatory menus. Lara jumps up if you just jump. Press jump and THEN a direction key and Lara jumps toward any direction! Jump during a run to perform a long jump. Press Action button to grab the edge of a cliff, and to climb up or grab during a jump. Press Walk to move slowly and carefully. When you press the look button, the camera goes behind Lara's back, and Lara rotates her head in the camera direction (up, down, left and right). You can climb sideways along a ledge if there is no room to climb up. Press DOWN and ACTION to jump back off a cliff and grab the edge. You can carefully move along a wall using DEL and PGDN. Use direction buttons and jump to swim. Use ROLL to change direction immediately. Press Draw Weapon and then Action to shoot. Lara aims at one of the enemies. There are many enemies: lions, crocodiles, bats, wolves, and people with weapons.

Tomb Raider I is a game that, even decades after its release, still rewards curiosity. I started the game again earlier this year because you can now play it in virtual reality with motion controls, which I definitely wanted to try! (You can play it in VR via this program: https://sidequestvr.com/app/38086/beef-raider-xr-tomb-raider-in-vr https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAeUgiz7XjE&list=PLGsOL4SfL-mMDbmEA3Tz6heVo2f7US594 This is the beginning of the franchise, where you play as Lara Croft, an archaeologist-adventurer who explores ancient ruins, solves environmental puzzles, finds keys and artifacts, and dodges traps to advance, sometimes even animals or enemies. The movements are precise, but sometimes unforgiving; jumping over pits or navigating rough platforms tests your timing and spatial awareness. The combat is simple but satisfying; pistols and shotguns feel powerful when used well, especially in tense moments. The graphics are dated, but that adds to the charm rather than detracts from it. There are also, of course, remastered versions of the classic Tomb Raider games.
