Touhou: Artificial Dreams in Arcadia is a blobber (that is, a party-based grid-based dungeon crawler) with some classic SMT elements, a JRPG overworld, and a bullet-hell-based capture mechanic. And it's absolutely amazing. Just looking at the store page and screenshots I was still a bit skeptical, but honestly, the first impression doesn't do the overall quality of this justice. This type of game, in my opinion, lives and dies based on a large number of things coming together, and here, everything does: [*]The old school dungeon crawling and mapping, with good variety, interesting (but not too prevalent) gimmicks, and with a nice little acknowledgment reward for fully mapping out floors [*]The SMT aspect works, if anything, better than it ever did in SMT, at least for me. Because every single character is a Touhou character, and so has their own quirks, expected affinities, and so on, which makes them interesting to encounter/discover/use. The game really benefits from decades of franchise building in that sense. [*]There are some really smart tradeoff decisions when it comes to resource management, which is always important in a good blobber. It has a lore justification for basically having a (soft) exploration timer, but you can decide the tradeoff between longer exploration and a more powerful party. [*]The battle system, while rather basic overall, has some emphasis on buffing/debuffing in boss battles, with stackable buffs. It also has an additional party-wide resource (SP, in addition to each character's traditional HP/MP), which can be used for more and more interesting effects as the game progresses. Party composition and placement also becomes more important, as does the specialization of your own player character. [*]Even the writing fits the setting to a T. Touhou stories have this special and rather somewhat unique quality, where the characters are just so matter-of-fact about even outlandish incidents, and the game captures that perfectly. Interacting with the various characters, although it's just a few sentences each, is fun. [*]Finally, the game developer understands and implements pacing better than a lot of huge projects manage to do. For example, when the game world opens up a lot more, I thought that this could get a bit annoying to traverse, and this is where the game unlocked a new mechanic (even with an intriguing in-universe event) exactly to cover that. And similar things happen later on when dungeons become longer and the save points more sparse. Oh, and you also get something absurd like 9 hours of gameplay on a charge with this on Steam Deck. Overall, if you like either traditional dungeon crawlers or Touhou I highly recommend this game. If you like both, you should have already bought it.

It's got great dungeon design, phenomenal sprite work, clever writing, an interesting premise, and a soundtrack that can go toe-to-toe with Atlus's best 16-bit bangers. The fusion mechanics bring you all the fun of teambuilding without any of the frustration, and there's even respecs.

Read the other reviews for information about the game proper. Workshop support was just added, as was an extremely in-depth campaign creation program. I've poked around with it and it's genuinely amazing how much there is to it, it even supports custom assets. This was an update that was (from my perspective) out of nowhere, and it's one of the largest I've seen added to a game. As for the game itself, I couldn't recommend it more, even before this. It's one of the few games I've spent the time to 100%, and it was a great time.

Probably the best entry level way to get into 2hu. Coincidentally, one of the best ways to get your nuts crushed SMT style.

The Short Version: Artificial Dream is a shining tribute to old-school first-person dungeon crawler RPGs. The core gameplay loop is fun, the graphics are beautiful, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. No knowledge of Touhou Project, Shin Megami Tensei, or DRPGs is necessary for your enjoyment, just a love of good games and classic, turn-based RPGs. Get it, now. You won't regret it. Highly Recommended. The Long Version: Artificial Dream in Arcadia is a first-person dungeon crawler RPG, in the style of the Super Famicom Shin Megami Tensei (SMT) games. Drawing from the long-running Touhou Project series of video games, the story takes place in the hidden land of Gensokyo. You take control of Sumireko, a young psychic who has, putting it simply, a long and fairly complex relationship with the people of this place. One day, a mysterious Monolith appears, and Gensokyo is invaded by clones of its residents. Silent and unresponsive to outside input, they are dubbed Sleepers, and Sumireko is charged with resolving this incident. She must travel the land, go to various places (each one from the official Touhou works), and try to figure out where the Sleepers came from, and, more importantly, how to stop them. This is broken down into a series of (usually) moderately-sized dungeons, all of which are first-person, in the style of the SMT games. Navigation starts out a little slow, but you get better tools later on as the game progresses. When you meet enemies, you can "Hijack" them to force them to join you. Rather than speaking to them, as you would in the SMT franchise, you instead must play a short shooting minigame with them. Yes, every recruitable enemy has a unique one of these. Yes, this means there are some 150 of them. Yes, some of them get utterly insane. Believe it or not, It's pretty fun, most of the time. Good alternative to the old-school "Negotiation," and it's a brilliant callback to the fact that Touhou is a shmup, first and foremost. Each enemy is a character from the Touhou Project series, be it one of the video games, the manga, or other side works. Even characters from the older PC98 era (pre-Windows) are here. It is simply wild how many are included. If there are any downsides to this, it's that you will be changing equipped Sleepers (almost) every time new ones show up. This is because new ones have better stats and stat growth, so you are (somewhat) discouraged from sticking with your favorites. It isn't a big deal, however. You are given a lot of freedom as to how you can equip yourself, as well. Sumireko can learn any skill, and you can even transfer skills onto your other Sleepers, allowing you to optimize your loadout. The gameplay is simple, but fun. Combat is fast and strategic. Exploration is the hard part, where Artificial Dream turns into a resource management game, and I'm here for this. The presentation is also top shelf, with a fantastic soundtrack, first of all. The graphics are a little simplistic, but this is a stylistic choice to better reflect the older SMT games. There are even amusing touches, like enemies either not animating, or having two-frame animations, similar to the older SMT games. Every sprite is distinctive, if nothing else, and the portraits and ending slates are all gorgeous. The only actual flaw I can level at this game is the fact that the difficulty goes a bit crazy in its last leg. It gets downright unfair, in fact, with enemies capable of killing you in one or two shots if you're not prepared, and sometimes, even if you are. This motif continues into its lengthy postgame, as well. The game is manageable, but it has some unreasonable portions throughout. It's not a deal breaker, but I feel it needs to be said. Even with that, this is a near-perfect game. Knowledge of Touhou Project and SMT, while they certainly HELP, are not necessary to enjoy this game. All you need is love of classic RPGs. Get it. You won't regret your time in Gensokyo.
