I don't like it. ...but I'm not going to review it negatively because I can tell that the game developer put alot of effort and passion into this fan-game and I found myself listening to the OST a bunch of times because it scratched my brain well. I just do not like this type of game at all but it doesn't warrant a negative review at all because it just isn't fair and I really appreciate the effort put into this game. This is coming from a guy who's never really played this type of genre before so do bear with me. I wanted to like this game, I really did. So much that I tried this game four different times for half an hour, hoping that something would change my mind about it which ended up with me not really enjoying it because clearly this type of game genre is not my thing. I don't like the maze-like gameplay, I don't like how the stats are explained and I don't like how repetitive or annoying it can be most of the time. The only thing I found really nice about this game is the OST because I just really like music. The pixel art in this game is also really really pleasing to look at alongside it's steam page art, workshop art and those backgrounds you can put on your steam profile. These are mostly MY issues and I don't think that anyone has any issues except for the repetitive nature of T:ADIA. I found myself really enjoying the music and I do still listen to it alot and I plan to purchase it. I really love how the characters in this game are portrayed as how they are in the original game's lore (Mainline Touhou and it's lore). I just find it really a bummer that I cannot get into this type of game without feeling frustrated about it's lack-luster boring gameplay to me. 90% of this game was mostly just frustration and nothing positive. I can tell that this gameplay is solid to the many people out their into this type of thing but it's just not for me. So for anyone passing by to find a good Touhou fangame then I will say that if you're into this type of gameplay then you should 100% play this for yourself and you will enjoy every moment of it and everything it has to offer. Just because I do not find this fun dosen't mean that you shouldn't try this for yourself so I suggest you to forget about my own opinions on T:ADIA, go buy and go into the game and see if you'll love it. I recommend this game despite me not liking it myself.

Touhou: Artificial Dreams in Arcadia is a blobber (that is, a party-based grid-based dungeon crawler) with some classic SMT elements, a JRPG overworld, and a bullet-hell-based capture mechanic. And it's absolutely amazing. Just looking at the store page and screenshots I was still a bit skeptical, but honestly, the first impression doesn't do the overall quality of this justice. This type of game, in my opinion, lives and dies based on a large number of things coming together, and here, everything does: [*]The old school dungeon crawling and mapping, with good variety, interesting (but not too prevalent) gimmicks, and with a nice little acknowledgment reward for fully mapping out floors [*]The SMT aspect works, if anything, better than it ever did in SMT, at least for me. Because every single character is a Touhou character, and so has their own quirks, expected affinities, and so on, which makes them interesting to encounter/discover/use. The game really benefits from decades of franchise building in that sense. [*]There are some really smart tradeoff decisions when it comes to resource management, which is always important in a good blobber. It has a lore justification for basically having a (soft) exploration timer, but you can decide the tradeoff between longer exploration and a more powerful party. [*]The battle system, while rather basic overall, has some emphasis on buffing/debuffing in boss battles, with stackable buffs. It also has an additional party-wide resource (SP, in addition to each character's traditional HP/MP), which can be used for more and more interesting effects as the game progresses. Party composition and placement also becomes more important, as does the specialization of your own player character. [*]Even the writing fits the setting to a T. Touhou stories have this special and rather somewhat unique quality, where the characters are just so matter-of-fact about even outlandish incidents, and the game captures that perfectly. Interacting with the various characters, although it's just a few sentences each, is fun. [*]Finally, the game developer understands and implements pacing better than a lot of huge projects manage to do. For example, when the game world opens up a lot more, I thought that this could get a bit annoying to traverse, and this is where the game unlocked a new mechanic (even with an intriguing in-universe event) exactly to cover that. And similar things happen later on when dungeons become longer and the save points more sparse. Oh, and you also get something absurd like 9 hours of gameplay on a charge with this on Steam Deck. Overall, if you like either traditional dungeon crawlers or Touhou I highly recommend this game. If you like both, you should have already bought it.

I begun playing this game with only incredibly basic knowledge of the Touhou franchise. I knew some characters, I knew what it was about but never have I played a Touhou game. However, I deeply adore classic SMT games and similar Atlus dungeon crawlers. So, this game caught my eye. The game and the steam page is a pretty cover so to speak, game was on sale so I decided to pick it up. Upon playing and completing I can confidently tell you that this game is as pretty inside as the cover on the outside. I went from knowing more or less nothing of Touhou to becoming quite interested in it thanks to the visible love the creators have put in, pulling from so many sources and making the world so much bigger than I can have imagined Touhou to be showing me interesting characters who I would like to learn more of. Below are my thoughts on the game, without spoilers for the most part, but if you want the short answer then yes this game is worth it. Visually and audibly the game is very appealing and never had moments of ugliness or ear-bleeding effects or music. I was actually rather impressed with how well the classic SMT style was adapted to fit the world of Gensokyo. The art style is the near identical, but the colors are more vibrant to match the wonder and mysticism in the world in contrast to the apocalyptic nature of SMT. The UI is great and intuitive, though I wish in the "Skill Transfer" section of fusion that the skills were visible as you scrolled through so I don't have to check them one by one while I weigh my options. The game's difficulty is pretty low overall, I'd say. I only struggled in two parts. The area called "Animal Realm" or something like that. It was an absolutely brutal gauntlet of strong enemies, no healing, and powerful wardens (even stronger enemies that patrol the map and fight you if you collide with them.) The second area I struggled in was the true final boss. Makes sense, right? The boss had a really OP gimmick but it was a gimmick to test your strategy, team building, and endurance. On paper what would be annoying became something that was incredibly fun and rewarding to overcome because of good design. These two parts I struggled in I look back on with fondness opposed to despair. My least favorite parts were dungeons were near every tile was a poison tile (a tile that has a chance to inflict poison on your party when you step on it.) I found these tiles to provide very little challenge thanks to the ability to fill your backup party with healers who can heal you while outside of battle. It was just annoying instead to have to constantly cure the low impact poison. Even if it makes sense in lore, I felt it could be handled better if shortcuts were composed of poison tiles while the long roads only had the scattered about. There were other special tiles too and dungeons that focused around them, but they were par for the course for a game like this. The battery mechanic to summon your "Sleepers" and use the map was actually really well thought out and added depth to such a short game. If the battery ran out, you kind of have to go up the creek without a paddle, so it's a constant resource you have to be wary of. In SMT the Magnetite is used, kind of like a secondary money that you can just stack up. The battery is a set amount (for the most part) so it'll always be a worry throughout the game which is nice. A lot of the permanent upgrades and some of the gameplay altering "grimoires" are related to the battery, giving you ways to work around it's downsides without neglecting it's challenge. Excellent system. The progression makes good use of the smaller map by utilizing key items and abilities to maintain the flow. I never was lost for too long. The story, even for someone who didn't understand Touhou lore was pretty fun and easy to understand. I think the ending (For ending A and B) was rather anti-climatic and would have wished for another fight after the final boss. If you have beat the game, you would know who I am referring to. Regardless, I 100% this game (with joy and not an excess amount of difficulty) and I would highly recommend it. I bought it on sale which is lovely, but I can assure you, this game is well worth the $10 USD.

Pretty good SMT-alike. I would say its big weakness is if you don't know about Touhou (or maybe even if you do) it's lacking the ability to "educated guess" weaknesses like a skull is probably weak to holy, a bird is probably weak to bullet, etc. How am I supposed to remember what this anime girl is weak to ADDENDUM: I do feel like the game reeeeally starts to drag on 20 hours in. The "plot" has stretched past its limit, every encounter is a pretty annoying composition of 3 or 4 tough enemies, dungeons are getting more and more obnoxious... actually finishing this is for hardcore sicko crawlers

An absolute must play if you love dungeon crawler especially if you had played the older SMT titles before. Soundtrack is godlike but the gameplay can be quite cumbersome at time if you don't prepare with items to help you explore. Still overall great with post-game content as well. and if you can't get enough, there's even steam workshop for custom created levels. I already liked Sumireko but she was accurately well-written with her lines so I love her even more. There were many times I laughed out loud from her responses.
