Though I was turned away from the game due to being locked into 6key from Hard onwards at first (skill issue hah), this has been resolved ever since separate modes for 4key and 6key were implemented. Love the devs for that ๐Ÿ™‡ However, there are still some things that are kind of missing/lacking in my opinion: [*]The gap in difficulty from Hard to Lunatic feels way too wide. You go from patterns that often don't even utilise the full beats/melody of a song in (especially lower level) Hard songs to being required to have insane finger control with a bunch of 2-4 finger slider patterns in Lunatic songs. This could be resolved by bringing back Extra difficulty, like the one the mobile version used to have, where Hard and Lunatic charting meets somewhere in the middle with the intensity of Lunatic, but the charting style being more similar to Hard. This is probably very unrealistic to execute though since they would have to do this for about 200 songs (times two for 4key and 6key mode). [*]The difficulty ratings feel inconsistent. Using Lunatic levels as an example, there are level 24s that are low BPM and don't feel that complex to play, while there are level 22s that have these sudden bursts of intensity that make it hard to hold combo or sight read, so I wonder what these ratings are based on. This system could be improved by adding graphs that show different "beatmap attributes" (not sure what it's called) that each have a 1-10 rating, for things like note density (for long spam parts, like there are in Marasy's songs), technique (for slider-heavy maps), reading (for complex patterns or changing note speed) etc. [*]At the moment, favouriting Mitama cards is kind of pointless when using the touchscreen layout because they are not displayed during gameplay, unlike with the standard interface, so the only time you see them is when viewing your stats or while scrolling through your collection. This could be solved by displaying them the way that the mobile version did, either as a static image or with their animations/effects. [*]Lastly, this doesn't concern the game directly and is more related to Steam, but content for Steam's point shop and badges would be really cool! This is just a personal wish of mine and doesn't affect my experience with the game though haha. And that's about it. I don't know if the devs will even read this, but I just wanted to put this out there anyways. Thanks to everyone who read this review in its entirety, and thank you UnknownX for making such a large-scale Touhou rhythm game!

Edit: As of version 1.9, I have spent a bit more time and found some other problems that were fixed and only realized it once the patch was up. What's more, my biggest complain about the game, the way 4 and 6 keys worked, is now fixed. You can play every stage in every difficulty in either 4 or 6 keys. The new DLCs are also nice, if a bit pricey, but not by much. Because of this, I've increased the rating by one (8 -> 9). This is a fun rhythm game in a Touhou style. The game has two gameplay styles: The "Normal" stages and the "Danmaku" stages. The gameplay for the "Normal" is a nice 4 to 6 key rhythm game, though I must say it's a bit annoying when the 4 keys are the easy and normal difficulties and the 6 keys are the hard and lunatic difficulties. Meaning if you're someone more used to 4 key like me, you will need to learn 6 keys if you don't want to get bored by the difficulty of the 4 key stages . As for the "Danmaku" stages, it's fun, but I'm not going out of my way to play those after I completed the campaign. You have a bullet hell game with some notes falling from the side of the screen and you need to keep track of both gameplay to nab a better score. Track selection is also pretty good with a good variety of styles and difficulties. Same thing for the DLCs. This game campaign has a story and... I got bored of it pretty quickly. It's presented in a VN style, where we follow either Reimu or Marisa and stuff happens. Most of it felt like filler and by the 1/4 of the campaign I zoned out of the story and just read the pages fast to get the gist and go back to the good part. At least the campaign wasn't very long (took me 10h I think) and by the end you will have unlocked almost all tracks besides a few that are optional and well hidden. Beside that less than interesting story that goes almost nowhere, the campaign still is fun for the challenges presented in the levels (Like fog in the level, the notes look distorted, etc.) I'd recommend the game especially if you like Touhou music or you're a big rhythm game fan. I'd say that this is the best 6 lane traditional rhythm game on Steam right now, the vast majority of the charts feel really good (I only play on lunatic aside from the X songs for reference) and frankly I just like the majority of the music. My biggest and only real gripe with the game is that there are a number of songs that I really like where their chart does the visual gimmick of slow down/speed up/stop and go stuff which is just something I hate in any rhythm game. Lastly, I've only played in freeplay mode as I have no care for a story mode in a traditional rhythm game. Overall I love the game and all the song packs, along with some free updates, have added more and more songs that I love playing so I hope to keep seeing more, and I hope they add a gimmick free 30 song sometime. Also if you're finding the note timings to be far too easy/generous just enable "expert mode" which was originally the only mode in the day 1 version of the game which feels much better imo.

The free play mode is very good; it's a solid, if fairly typical, rhythm game, with a broad genre selection from hard rock to light memes. The core of this game is very, very good. The surrounding aspects are where it falters. The tutorials (especially for Danmaku mode) just dump a ton of pages of info on you. The keys for UI navigation feel often arbitrary. And most notably the story mode suffers for multiple reasons: Repetition of tracks across multiple stages (despite the wide track list), unclear progression, and the RPG aspect in the Mitama cards... which can and do effect your score, resulting in "I got All Brilliant and the game still gave me a C rank" nonsense that doesn't feel right for a rhythm game at all. And Danmaku mode is cute but, without difficulty settings, feels like it's tuned only for players who've never touched a shmup before. Again, none of these issues tarnish a great core rhythm gameplay and its free play mode. It's just all the stuff outside of that which is lacking, but that's not so important to a rhythm game to say this is bad.

Good game if you appreciate the touhou soundtrack and fanworks. Though the danmaku sections leave a lot to be desired, the actual kagura sections have very few problems. I rate it a 7/โ‘จ for introducing me to a few artists I had never heard of before and providing a fun and imaginative gameplay experience.
