I'm going to start this review by stating I have no understanding of the Touhou series as a whole. This is the only ever Touhou game I have ever played. Where do I begin? This game is HARD. I'm serious. If you have never played a mystery dungeon game before, you will be in for a rude awakening if you play this game. So while I enjoy the difficulty of the game a lot, I would steer clear and maybe try a pokemon mystery dungeon game first if you have no experience with mystery dungeon games, or at the very least a traditional roguelike. The story for me was somewhat nonsensical, but also funny. I get the impression there are a good number of references that I just have no context for as a newcomer to the series, and they do give EACH character a LOT of screentime early on. It hurt the pacing a bit in the early game, but it is also humorous enough to still to keep me paying attention. You most likely will have a better experience if you have familiarity with the story, but if you just want a hardcore dungeon crawler, the game makes skipping through and reviewing old story in case you change your mind easy. Going more in depth into the gameplay itself, it involves fighting enemies with VERY varied abilities. It's almost overwhelming in fact, once they are high enough level to use said abilities. I've somehow only filled out about a third of the enemy dex, and already there are over 100 enemies in there. A lot of the game once you get the credits (which took about 20 hours for me) will involve dying to some BS you didn't realize could happen, looking up in your dex what killed you, and trying to avoid the same fate next time. However, I really respect it. I just did the final sage trial to unlock my third character, and it took me like 5 tries, many of which I died in the 40s on a 50 floor dungeon. It made accomplishing it feel that much better because it was so difficult. That is the true fun of this game, so just know what you are getting into if you decide to buy it. TL;DR Don't be tricked by the cute aesthetic, it's like playing the dark souls or cuphead of the mystery dungeon genre. It's fun if you are familiar with the genre and want a major challenge, but don't make it your first roguelike game.

Pretty good game, I love how creative and practical all the mechanics are with the items. The main issue I have with this game is that they for some reason like to depict my beloved wife Sanae Kochiya as a complete dick head for no reason and it feels like they're trying to make the Hakurei Shrine look better in comparison. Justice for my girl Sanae.
