June 2025
it isn't a masterpiece industry changing game, but it IS something that fills a hole from the saturdays i spent as a kid in an arcade playing TMNT/X-Men/Simpsons cabinets. i am not very sentimental about stuff like this, but at around hour two it all really hit me. this is exactly what i was feeling, and this is exactly what it is. i bought the platinum edition and for $54 (on sale) the price tag dwarfs what i spent on tokens for arcade cabinets JUST like it in 1990s money lol. the game has very functional online play so far, the overworld map is very cool and interactive in terms of seeing what other people are up to and what they are farming. the hub is very fleshed out as well and feels alive, even when it's not at its busiest with players. i could probably chill and run around in the hub by myself and hardly realize i was the only one there. it's really cool. monetization is as you would expect. you pay for currency and buy cosmetics. cosmetic stuff is the only sort of MTX there is as far as i can tell at the moment. sign me up. i do not care even a little bit if they want to monetize this way. if they create things to sell me that i want to buy, i will buy. it's that simple. the game is apparently going f2p at full launch anyways, so really it would be crazy for anyone to complain about this system. i am one of those PoE players with 100 stash tabs and pretty much every supporter pack. challenge accepted. the game has 4 classes that are actually all very unique and fun in their own right. they are leveled separately from each other, and each class has a level separate from your CHARACTER level overall. sounds sort of convoluted, it's not. FFXIV players will catch on right away. personally i am a sword/shield + punching gloves dude, but i've given each of them a go and they are all serviceable and fun and effective. at lower levels they do not feel lacking, which is surprising because generally you gotta dump skill points into these things before stuff starts coming together, but that isn't the case here. and it's not for lack of options. this game has a LOT of skill point unlocks available to every class to change the way they play both in a group setting and solo. i'm not sure about end game yet, but i will update if i get there and find issues, but so far everything feels good. the stages themselves are either procedurally generated or there is a MASSIVE pool of them. i don't think i have run the same one twice, and the general game play loop is you run a single node on the map repeatedly until you either get the loot you're looking for or the level you want to achieve etc etc. it isn't repetitive outside of the game play itself which is pretty much the point. this is typical ARPG type of game where you just grind the shit out of content, reap the rewards, push further, rinse, repeat. character customization is actually bonkers. i was excited to play so i put together probably the most basic character i could have just to get to the smashing, but believe me when i tell you that even for someone like me who generally doesn't care, it wouldn't be hard to dump a good portion of an afternoon into messing with it. my gf takes HOURS on this sort of thing. she was happy with her options, that is high praise lol. this game isn't one of those "fun with friends" types of games. it's an "AMAZING with friends" type of game with solo play being awesome in its own right. while playing solo i never have an urge to play multiplayer, but knowing i can easily find others to smash with is a very nice feeling. aside from the game itself making grouping very easy and convenient, the discord server is also very active. also worth noting the supporter packs get some pretty cool monthly bonus rewards that you can retroactively claim from previous months. those cap out at gold and each month has a silver + a gold reward to collect, the only difference between Gold into Platinum is more in game currency + the 3 curio things which tbh i have no idea how to use lol. just wanted to support the devs. they unlock special cosmetics of some sort i think that might be a premium above the normal belfry bucks currency. i've noticed i can get a 4th one in a cosmetic pack for belfry bucks, so i am guessing they are legitimately pretty special for FOMO releases of something. all in all if you're like me and don't ever really want to dive into something super lore deep or attention critical this game is awesome. you can be at the menu, then into a stage, then back at base to chill for a few minutes in a matter of ten minutes. feels good. CURIO CORES: okay so i found out they are used to basically unlock themed battlepass types of cosmetics and stuff, just like they run it in Helldivers 2. I approve. this is cool. i got a free one for doing a quest and they are offered for Belfry Bucks in packs of 1 and 3 (at a slight discount). 480 for a single, it seems fair. this game gets my full approval.

Amazing game! Love the side scroller brawler, combat is fluid and well thought. Love the ambiance music and style. Some ideas: -A way to interact with people in the map, if you want to group up on a tile other than having to make a group and hope someone of your level joins. -Healer class. -Range class.

Its just nice to have a good beat'em up with persistent RPG elements (classes, gearing up, leveling up, etc.) and great combo system. Solid 8/10 game for me and look to put many hours into the game after the final progress reset coming 4/29/25.

The reason anyone gives this game bad reviews, hasn't put in the time. They say it is a repeat game. Once you get to the later levels the minions get a lot harder to fight. Their moves are a lot faster and the amount of enemies doubles. Knowing what class you are good at will really allow you to accomplish what you need to do and the combos you can pull off before you get over whelmed. As someone who at one point thought the same thing, until i got farther into the game. Even the bosses that you fought before, when going back to replay them at higher levels. You need to be a pro with your class or have the right armor set to fight them. Which makes the game very interesting, especially when i unlock more of the map. Excited to see more bosses and different enemies. So far i have 113 hours into this game and still have most of the map to unlock. It has been my go to game when i want to game for 30 mins - 1 hour and still feel like I did a lot. Then game is a perfect side scrolling game that allows me to pickup a quick game for i do have a busy schedule. On my days off I will even find myself playing at least for 1 hour - 2 hours. I also love a game that lets me do full cosmetics. Making spend most the time trying to make my self look good lol. I just reached MAX level for the Pyro class after 113 hours but i can assume others can get it done faster. I cant wait to try out the others, and possibly see what this new weapon they will bring into the game. I 100% think if you like side scrolling games, grab this or wait until it becomes free. But if you wait you'll miss out on all the cosmetics that you wont be able to obtain when the game drops. Either or feel free to leave comments or questions and ill answer them. I want more people to play this game and not leave negative reviews on a game that they only but in 20 hours or less in.

For those of us mid 30s gamers, Towerborne brings back the feeling of beat em ups like turtles in time, meshes it nicely with loot elements, and so far has been a joy to play. I've actually wanted something like this for a very long time and truly glad I came across this game! Hoping for more classes in the future, it would be great to have a ton of different character types, builds, etc.
