This game is really good and honestly, I think it's a more worthy sequel to the original No More Heroes than the actual second game in the series. The gameplay is surprisingly good and fluid, I kind of expected to not like the combat as much as the other NMH games but I was pleasantly surprised with how good it felt. The death glove chips that Travis can pick up as collectibles in the stages really widen the different ways you can go about killing enemies and bosses and are all fun to mess around with. Speaking of the enemies and bosses, unfortunately while the bosses aren't bad at all they aren't exactly hard to deal with. For context I played on Bitter difficulty on my very first playthrough and I had more trouble with the common enemies rather than the bosses besides Silver Face. The bosses aren't as challenging as the other bosses in previous and future NMH games and it's kind of disappointing to a certain degree because there were a few instances where I completely mowed down a boss and I went "That's it?" when it ended because I was expecting more of a fight there. This gets remedied with Silver Face who is not only the most challenging boss that I actually died to a fair bit but was also a really fun boss to beat all around. Going back on the enemies being tougher than the bosses though, I actually almost died a lot to them and I had to strategize on what my next move would be at times so I wouldn't perish and it was great, there's a part of me that wishes the bosses were as challenging as the enemies but they make up for it with how well written and designed they are. Jumping into the story now, slight spoilers, but it's really good and I love how each level is an analogue for different parts of Suda's life as a whole from his youth to his disappointments to his inner most feelings about being a game dev. The characters are really well written from Dr. Juvenile to Badman to Travis himself who is portrayed as retired and burnt out from his life as a a famous assassin. The "Strikes Back" scenarios for both Badman and Travis are also really great too and specifically Travis' has multiple references and cameos from other Suda works like Kurayami Dance, The Silver Case, Killer is Dead, etc. I love Badman's scenarios more though because of how interesting they are and how they give us a deeper look into Birkin and even Charlotte. The music like all the other NMH games is peak Suda and is amazing as always with songs like Samata Gohan (Cold Rice) and Silver Face's boss theme being music that I listen to outside of the game due to how great they sound and they add to the atmosphere of the levels perfectly. The levels themselves are mostly good but I feel like some of them have parts that are a bit repetitive and when you're trying to get certain collectibles it can be a bit tedious to backtrack to certain areas to get them but it's not necessarily something that's super awful and hurts the game in a big way. My favorite level in the game is the once DLC, now main game content, Killer Marathon Beyond due to how it makes everything more challenging and a lot more unique since you go through different levels that are each distinct and enjoyable in their own way. It's the best level in the game to me due to how much fun it manages to offer up with it's diversity and how it plays overall. I also love how the game looks overall with it's stylized cel-shaded esque style and how things like the pause menu UI and archive pages you get to read all have this certain aesthetic that I can't really find a specific name for but what I will say is that it's the exact type of thing that appeals to someone like me. While this game may not be for everyone due to it's less challenging difficulty or it's radically different gameplay style compared to all the other NMH games in the series, I do suggest that you should at least give it a try because in my opinion this game is fantastic and underrated. It is a certified Suda51 classic.
Mixed feelings on this one. Hard to thumbs down a Suda51 game, but it's, like, kind of exactly what you'd expect from him, by now. Gameplay's just not as good as the usual No More Heroes games, the antagonists, which are a large part of why these games work, are boring; but, the levels themselves have a fair bit of charm, it's still made with that strange, pouty yet wonderful joie de vivre, and, as an experience, I don't regret playing through it; it's ultimately a spin-off, and it performs as a spin-off typically does. Unremarkable but worth checking if you're a big sudahead.
Suda51 becomes broke and homeless after making the atrocity that is NMH2 and then wakes up in a cold sweat one night realizing that he can make good games and TSA is created. Definitely not an amazing game , given the generally mediocre level design and enemy types that range from nothing more than screen pollution to worse than some bosses, but at least characters and settings are fun unlike NMH2. I really wish Badman got more time to shine, but I understand the limitations this game faced with it's budget and all really hurt the chances of that. If you're a NMH/Suda51 fan and are thinking of skipping TSA for any reason, I would heavily advise against it. It's absolutely worth playing, and unlike NMH2, it has significance to the overall plot of the series. The issues I have with it aren't THAT bad either, I just couldn't bring myself to play more than 1 level a day with how drawn out some can be. Especially the first few and the final base game level. God I hate CIA.
Hm. These games continue to challenge me in a way that makes it hard to summarize my thoughts at first. The writing is stellar. The game takes breaks between missions to make you read through visual novel segments, and these really stand out as being fun to read. The addition of the Death Glove abilities is very welcome, and toying around with them to find new combinations adds a lot of spice to the gameplay. The visual style isn't bad either, and the UI and boss fights stand out as being excellent, as always. I also have to give them credit, this port crashes a lot less than the first two games. That said, some of these levels are way too long, especially for how tanky certain enemies are. They did strike a sweet spot with some of them, but I was almost begging for certain levels to come to a close 15 minutes before they actually did. This was kind of a problem in the second game, but it feels particularly egregious here. I think this one lacks some of the mass appeal of the first games, and I'm sure many of the references to Suda's past work were lost on me, but I appreciate this title for it's ambition and it's unapologetic story.
Great game with great story, visual aesthetic and soundtrack, however the gameplay is experimental and repetitive, for a short game like this it does not grant much demerit to the overall experience but it is not a perfect game and lacks depth. The other minor fault the game has is the sidequests, tracking jeanne and the hidden cheat codes are boring and laborous with a bad reward-effort result.
