Oct. 2025
I hate this game, because it makes me feel guilty for being angry at it. There are quite a few negative reviews of this game - and a lot of them are completely right in their assessment on where the game is lacking. Even though, I still think Trek to Yomi does not deserve a thumb down. Overall it is a really good product on every field. The story is simple, but told competently. A protagonist who needs to find balance by going to hell and back, and defeat his mortal enemy. Very samurai-esque, it has everything it needs, and even supernatural elements are implemented really well. The aestethics are an obvious call-back to Akira Kurosawa movies, with no color, special "old timey" filter, period music, and even a similar banner to the one from ,,Seven Samurai" (or at least I think it's a reference to it). Very great and cinematic camera angles are the icing on the cake. Atop of it all - the game is short, so just to my liking. There is nothing to hate about any of that, unless it's simply not your preference. From mechanical standpoint, the game is simple. You go from one corner of the screen to another, you fight enemies, sometimes you look for collectibles. Nothing else. That side of the game is done well. It's playable. With a right mindset (which for the most part isn't mine) it can be enjoyable. The game isn't hard. I wouldn't get all achievments if it was. The hardest encounters may have taken me ten tries, but those tries took less than 20 minutes, so you can have a feel for how fast the game is. But there are some problems with fighting mechanic which artifically raise the difficulty. The timing for *everything* is jsut bad. Not horrible - it's playable - but it's bad. Whether it's combos, parry, counter, or rolling, it's just bad. Do you know that feeling where at one point you make a combo perfectly ten times in a row, and then suddenly you can't do it even once? Do you know that feeling when you are absolutely sure you pushed the right button, and you feel like the game just ignored you? Yeah, prepare for that, if you want to play this game. Furthermore, there is a type of enemy which teleports before your stunning attack. Sometimes they teleport before your *every* stunning attack, and sometimes they just forget they can do that, and you can easily kill ten of them in a row. I have no idea what contributes to it, but it's super frustraiting. *Furthermore* some enemies have attacks with no indicator. They just hit you. So, you know, good luck parrying that. There is also a problem with difficulty levels, and achievments tied to it. If you beat the hardest level (which unlocks when you beat the game once on any level), you do not get achievments for lower levels. Which is bad, because... Ronin (second-hardest) difficulty is just an annoying drag. Yeah, you heard me. Second-hardest level is worse, than the hardest one. It's not harder - it's just an annoying drag. The hardest level (Kensei) allows you to kill enemies with one cut, but you also die that way. And to be honest? It's pretty fun. I would honestly prefer if this mode was avaiable from the begining, because it's super satisfying to cut through a group of enemies one-cut each. I did swear couple of times, I did repeat the same fight couple of times, but in the end it was my favorite playthrough. In this mode it's good to experiment with different strikes, since stunning strike - which is the go-to strike on lower levels - becomes mostly unusable. In Kensei mode, your sword feels like an actual sword. In Ronin, it feels like a metal bat. Your enemies can survive being sliced five times, while you get cut-down after three. The gameplay itself isn't harder at all, so all you need to beat Ronin is patience. A lot, a lot of patience... If not for my crippling addiction to gaining achievments, I would never beat the game on Ronin - so I would really like if the game gave me that achievment for beating Kensei. *But* achievments are not an integral part of the game, so you can scratch that as a "me" problem. The last major problem - no level selection. I have no idea what stands behind this reasoning, but I am sure it isn't reasonable. Overall? Good game. I don't regret beating it three times (fourth was on Ronin...).

This game is truly one of a kind, and it is so obscure I truly am surprised I was even able to find it. The Kurasawa theme, the combat style, the dialogue, voice acting, cinematic scenes, the story, everything. The path i chose in the game too was essentially a personal mirror of my own life, the resonance was part of the reason I liked this game so much, despite that I would say it is an objectively good and also short game. Personal Opinion Overall 10/10.

Trek to Yomi is a visually striking, cinematic side-scroller that pays homage to classic samurai films in the most artistic way possible. Presented entirely in black and white with film grain and dramatic camera angles, every frame feels like a moving Kurosawa scene. The combat is simple but deliberate, emphasizing timing and precision over button-mashing. While the gameplay isn't overly complex, the atmosphere, story, and emotional weight more than make up for it. The narrative explores themes of honor, duty, and the afterlife, pulling players through a beautifully haunting journey. It’s a short but memorable experience, perfect for those who appreciate storytelling, art direction, and samurai lore over complex mechanics. I'd give it a rating of 8/10

Trek to Yomi is a solid and well-executed trip to a black-and-white tale of swords and souls, where a simple but satisfying gameplay is paired with a charming narrative that offers three different endings. Enemy and setting variety could be better, but overall this is a game worthy of your time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3473399494 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3472881794

A game solely carried by it's vibes. The black and white samurai aesthetic is enjoyable throughout. What's not as enjoyable is the combat. It's serviceable and there's a lot of cool moves and ranged weapons to use but it didn't feel as responsive as it needed to be. Still overall a good time with a story that's not entirely unique but was entertaining to follow.
