April 2026
The definitive ninja hack and slash has returned, but different than how we expected it. I'll start short by saying the game is good. Fast, brutal and the sound design is just eargasm. Every obliteration is just so satisfying to do. Gameplay: Ninja Gaiden is unique when it comes to its gameplay mechanics. Sure one can compare it to DMC, but even then its is own thing. You really won't find anything that is similar to this in that aspect. This time around, Platinum Games added their own twist to it making it feel more of a MGRR and Bayonetta rather than a traditional NG game. Combat: The series is known for its brutality, so having it is a must no matter what. One of the best combat systems out there. If you are a true masochist, you will never get tired of seeing all the dismemberments, blood, limbs being cut off from the fiends and daemons. A unique pleasure indeed. Story: Has never really been known for it. If you are expecting some deep concepts and heavy emotional moments, then this game is not for you. These types of games you really don't play for the story. I'll say this though, in comparison to NG2 (which is my favorite from the series), it's not as good but still decent. Characters: Everyone loves Ryu. There is no Ninja Gaiden without him. Since Yakumo was the one who PG decided to go the direction with, plenty were disappointed with that and also how Ryu wasn't going to be the main protag in this. I understand that too. I myself was expecting this to be a return to form for Ryu. Unfortunately, its not. I think Yakumo works to some extent, but again, he just doesn't hit the same as The Dragon Ninja. As for the girls, you're introduced to a new one and Ayane makes an appearance. Art direction: Tomoko Nishii is talented. The art is lovely but it can get too cyberpunk esque and neon like after some time. But I think most would manage through it. Personally, would've liked to see some of the old traditional japanese areas again from the series. Either way, it's a job well done on that part. You can check out the rest of her work for NG4 here: https://www.platinumgames.com/official-blog/games/ninjagaiden4/ Voice acting: Japanese everytime with Ninja Gaiden. Don't bother with the English casting. Hideyuki Hori is just the GOAT. TWAAAAH! TWAAAAH! You just love to hear it. Chills always. Now, what could've been better? If Ryu was more present in the game. What I mean by that is Yakumo has 15 chapters and Ryu has a total of 4 . I do understand wanting to introduce a new protag, but they did say Yakumo was not going to take Ryu's spotlight or in other words "replace him". I don't know, it feels like he did to some extent in this. I am a little bothered to say the least. 1 weapon for Ryu and 4 for Yakumo? Plenty anticipated that the former was going to have 1 based on the trailers and it turned out to be true. Now, I have no idea which ones he will get for the future DLC content, but I hope to see the Lunar Staff, Tonfas, Kusari-gama back. I loved those personally. Regardless, having it be behind a paywall when that was not the case with the predecessors makes me believe Xbox had a say in this matter and wanted to profit as much as they could. Bad decision if thats the case. OST was not to my liking exactly and the vocals of Victor Borba does not fit in this game but somewhere in the vicinity of DMC etc. I would've preferred some of the OG like music from NG1/NG2 for ex making a comeback here. Not to say this one is bad, but the idea that some people think this has the best soundtrack from the series is mind boggling. Both NG1 and NG2 still exists... More in depth in Combat aspect: It has been simplified and certain moves from the previous titles has been removed in favor for a much easier and weaker system. One of the biggest flaws in the entire game. No idea why previous moves weren't added or why they didn't make a return of some sort, but it's rather underwhelming. Final thoughts: Seeing Ryu return was great. Sadly he is shoved as a side character for the majority of the game and Yakumo takes the lead instead. It's unfortunate and I can only hope the future DLC does Ryu justice. Combat is smooth and satisfying. Bosses are fun. Purgatory is a decent addition (would've liked trials from NG3 too) and Ayane's tits are heaven. As a hack and slash game, I'll give it a 7/10 and as a Ninja Gaiden game, it’s sitting at 6.5/10. The latter could change depending on how they approach Ryu in the DLC. Post-DLC thoughts: Lackluster in chapters and no gleam form for Ryu's new weapon. Yet again, he is side lined and Yakumo takes the spotlight. I don't know, it feels like Team Ninja in general just didn't care much at all and decided to let PlatinumGames do all the work and barely had any influence on it in general. There is so much MGRR elements to this, it just strips away from the traditional NG atmosphere and vibe the previous titles had. If this was the send off for the series, then I'm frankly underwhelmed. My rating for it will remain unchanged and if maybe NG5 happens by miracle in the distant future, we won't know until later, but if so, make Ryu the focus, have the other central characters appear again and return to the roots of what makes a Ninja Gaiden game.

This game is Platinum at their most completely gluttonous and as a result, it's heaven. but the unyielding sensory overload combined with the lightning fast speed of the game is an inviting combination. I think this might be the fastest/speediest/most overwhelming game I've ever played in my life and I couldn't be more in love with it on account of this. It requires 110% of my attention but it gives just as hard as it gets. After spending 300 hours back in the day with Ninja Gaiden Black and the more rural level settings of that beautiful classic, I loved the oppressive futuristic setting of NG4. It's 90% wet neon cyberbrutalism and 10% jungles and that ratio works really well. The rain soaked future cyber-tokyo with blue neon shining everywhere was always on point. They didn't even try to force a dumb sewer level into the game, which is always a bonus. Nothing says raw creativity like foregoing the sewer level. (Edit: I was considerately reminded that there are definitely sewer levels in this game. I'm not sure how I forgot that. Those missions aren't exactly the highlight of the game but it's still fun to slaughter streams of enemies there, as one would expect). and the Obliteration kills. my god. I've watched a thousand of them by now and my pupils still dilate each time one gets kicked off. This is a mechanic in-game where if you have dismembered a limb from an enemy, you can then hit them with a heavy attack to set off an Obliteration kill and it starts up the most absolutely ridiculous amount of slashy blood spurting weapon flapping I've ever seen committed to a video game screen. It's completely ridiculous and unnecessary and glorious in the best way possible. The camera zooms in tight while Yakumo shoves his sword into every possible angle of the bad guys and rips it out with a crunchy metallic schwing and then you remember that you can do that to the other 24 enemies still standing too. Also guillotine throwing enemies off various edges in large quantities is worth $69.99 on its own. the story itself is so goofy that it doesn't even warrant a discussion of how 'good' it is. It's Ninja Gaiden, it's the same thing every time. The Dark Dragon either a) exists and needs to die or b) has already died but is now resurrected by a villain and once again needs to die (re: option A). Throw in the Team Ninja signature "large-breasted comic relief female lead", a couple of predictable yet no less welcome plot twists, and Act end bosses that scream lines like "STILL ALIVE, ARE WE??" at the protag while rain pours on the arena and you truly have that magical ninja gaiden formula running on all cylinders here. It's no secret at this point that Ryu is not really the main character in this game but anyone that complains about that is missing the point of what makes pure action games so great in the first place. There's more than enough Ryu in there (esp with NG+) to give the die hards what they need. And yeah Yakumo kinda puts out Hot Topic middle manager vibes but it works in the setting and that's all that matters when the gameplay is 90% routinely chopping demons into 7 pieces over the course of 4.5 bloody dismember-y seconds. If someone truly needs to connect with a video game character when something like that is happening onscreen, then they probably cry themselves to sleep on a regular basis. I played this for about 30 mins on gamepass before buying it full price on Steam and it's easily one of my favorites of 2025, if not #1. Platinum + Ninja Gaiden is a dream. The fact that this exists after the general missteps of NG2 and NG3 is nothing short of a miracle. I will be forever grateful that Microsoft decided to greenlight NG4 because it is an absolute gift for anyone that loves overstimulation-induced dopamine hits cranked to 11 (and killer sound design) for hours on end with a high amount of replayability and a mind-melting amount of speed and prerequisite reactivity. It's the perfect action game. Also wanted to quickly mention that NG4 controls like a dream on the Deck. Holds a steady 60 fps and the battery drain is astonishingly slow while looking absolutely beautiful.

Rest in Peace TOMONOBU ITAGAKI-SAN!!!!!!! I will always love and respect you for bringing us such incredible games, without your vision we would not have this today. HERE IS THE REVIEW 4 HOURS INTO THE GAME SO FAR: The game is very good, the combat feels great, and it is challenging but oh so fun to slash through your enemies and the executions look fantastic with a enough variety to each of them to get you jazzed for the next kill. I like the aesthetic, the music is great, I believe they got the same band that did one of the DMC 5(DEVIL MAY CRY) songs to do a song for this game but all the songs have been solid to listen to so far. The new character is very cool, I haven't gotten to play RYU yet but been enjoying this new character which is something I am happy about since it was something I was worried about since you play Ryu in all the other games but i've grown to like this new character "Yakumo". I really been liking this game so far. I think If you are an OG fan of Ninja Gaiden, enjoy ninjas, or enjoy "Metal Gear Rising Revegeance" you'll enjoy this game! I wont know how I fully feel till I complete the game but so far I am loving it.

First of all: the combat feels so good. It feels like a proper Ninja Gaiden game. (I was afraid it would feel more like a Platinum game than NG). It's fast, snappy, and responsive. The enemies aren't spongey, and you can delimb most of the real quick. All you'd expect. Kinda weird you need to buy some basic stuff, like "On Landing UT", "UT level 2", "Absorb Essence for UT charge", etc. But at least these are cheap and you can buy them after 20~30min of gameplay. The graphics, the HUD and the menus are beautiful. It's running flawlessly 1080p/60fps on my system, even while streaming. If you're having performance issues, make sure to leave the "Object Quality" option on medium. I'd rather play as the GOAT Ryu Hayabusa, sure. He's the best! But Yakumo is a good character too, he's got some old moves and a few new tricks, and he's cool. Ryu is in there too, and he's playable on every level after beating the game, but Yakumo is the main character of this game, so that's a bummer.
