as a megaman fan (i played only megaman 11 on my xbox), its a really simple platformer, but it has nice difficulty and takes time to learn. the levels are made in a way where you need to learn the gimmicks first then get to the boss. there isnt alot gameplay wise besides classic run and gun gameplay with a bit of speed focus is pretty fun. its worth the cheap price.

UDONGEIN X is a compact yet remarkably confident action platformer developed and published by Bar Holographic Otaku in collaboration with 东游鉴, and it stands as an impressive example of how a fan-inspired project can feel polished, focused, and creatively self-assured. Drawing clear inspiration from the Touhou universe while avoiding the pitfalls of overreliance on lore, the game centers on Reisen Udongein Inaba and places her into a side-scrolling action framework that blends classic platforming sensibilities with dense bullet-hell pressure. Rather than attempting to retell an elaborate story, UDONGEIN X opts for a light narrative setup that provides motivation without interrupting the pacing, allowing gameplay to remain the central focus. This restraint works in the game’s favor, making it approachable even for players who are not deeply familiar with Touhou while still feeling respectful to longtime fans. From a mechanical standpoint, UDONGEIN X excels through precision and clarity. Movement is fast, responsive, and deliberately tuned to encourage aggressive play, with dashing, jumping, and wall interactions forming the backbone of both traversal and combat. Stages are carefully constructed to test reflexes and spatial awareness, often combining environmental hazards with enemy placements that force players to think on the move. The bullet patterns, while clearly inspired by traditional shoot-’em-ups, are adapted intelligently to a platforming context, ensuring that dodging never feels unfair or visually overwhelming. Boss encounters are a standout element, each designed around distinctive attack patterns that reward observation and learning rather than brute force, making victories feel earned rather than accidental. Progression in UDONGEIN X is understated but meaningful, offering a steady sense of growth without overwhelming the player with systems. As stages are completed and enemies defeated, players gain access to upgrades that enhance Reisen’s survivability and offensive capabilities, subtly shaping how challenges are approached. These upgrades do not trivialize the difficulty but instead provide small margins of forgiveness and strategic flexibility, particularly valuable on higher difficulty settings. The inclusion of multiple difficulty modes ensures that the game remains accessible to newcomers while still offering a demanding experience for seasoned action game enthusiasts. On harder modes, the balance between precision movement and bullet management becomes especially pronounced, turning each level into a test of consistency and composure. Visually, the game embraces a crisp pixel-art style that prioritizes readability and animation clarity over excess detail. Environments are varied enough to keep the journey visually engaging, while character sprites and effects remain easy to track even during the most hectic encounters. This visual discipline is crucial given the game’s reliance on fast reaction times, and it reflects a strong understanding of how aesthetic choices directly impact gameplay. The soundtrack complements this approach with energetic tracks that reinforce momentum without becoming distracting, helping each stage and boss encounter establish its own identity within the overall experience. What ultimately sets UDONGEIN X apart is how complete and intentional it feels despite its relatively modest scope. The game does not attempt to inflate its length with filler content or unnecessary mechanics, instead delivering a tightly curated sequence of challenges that respect the player’s time. Community reception has reflected this focus, with many players praising the game’s tight controls, fair difficulty curve, and clear inspiration from classic action platformers without descending into imitation. Even those unfamiliar with its source material often find themselves engaged by its mechanical polish and satisfying challenge loop. In the end, UDONGEIN X succeeds by understanding exactly what it wants to be: a fast, challenging, and highly replayable 2D action platformer that blends bullet-hell intensity with classic side-scrolling design. Its strengths lie not in grand storytelling or sprawling systems, but in moment-to-moment gameplay that consistently feels responsive, demanding, and rewarding. Whether approached as a fan homage or simply as a standalone indie action title, UDONGEIN X delivers a focused and memorable experience that showcases how thoughtful design and mechanical discipline can elevate even a relatively small-scale project into something genuinely compelling. If you like Touhou and Mega Man X, then chances are you will like this. Even if you don't care about Touhou, this is still a fun rift on Mega Man X that is worth the $0.99 it regularly goes on sale for. Some stages are more unique than others, but every stage generally has at least one unique enemy and a visually distinct setting. There are only a handful of stages that are completely built around their gimmick (e.g., flipping the level), but they are standouts. Similarly, the bosses have distinct attack patterns that are pretty fun to figure out. Reisen (the main character) controls great with snappy controls, a generous dash, and Mega Man X's wall-jump, but the first thing you'll probably want to do is remap your controls. The defaults are weird (U to shoot and O to dash). I got used to it by the time I stopped being an idiot and found the control options, but, again, that default is weird and will likely mess you up at first. The main hang-ups I see people potentially having with this game are its difficulty and the "lack" of upgrades. The game is difficult-but-doable, just like classic Mega Man and Mega Man X. Also like those games, there are a few frustrating areas that require precise jumps over insta-kill spikes. Level checkpoints and infinite retries help, but, if that's not something you want to deal with, play on Normal so the spikes at least don't insta-kill you. As for the "lack" of upgrades, there actually are upgrades, but you don't get the subweapons from bosses like you do in Mega Man X. Instead, bosses and a secret hidden in each level give you a currency you can spend on upgrades in a shop. I like the upgrades (in particular, the ability to curve your shots) and they do meaningfully impact how you play, but, if you like Mega Man for its subweapons, you'll be disappointed. As a Touhou game, this is great. There's a good variety to the characters in it and it makes fun references without getting annoying. It also doesn't require a deep knowledge of Touhou to enjoy. If you know Reisen is from the moon, you'll be able to follow things. If not, you'll feel some dialogue go over your head, but the sparse writing in the game generally does a good job sneaking in the required context. TL;DR - It's "Touhou Mega Man X", if that sounds like your thing, definitely pick it up when it is on sale.

Fun bosses, Lackluster stage design. Regardless, a good game that's definitely worth the 5 dollar asking price
