If this game isn’t for you it will infuriate you. If however this game is for you, it wall also infuriate you, but you will still bang your face into its solid edifice anyways, and keep pushing on, concussed and infuriated, but also determined. And it will be worth every second and every penny of its cost. I really wish I could say definitely whether this game is for someone or not but you genuinely don’t know until you try. And you really need to try it regardless, it’s deserving even if you ultimately realize you are not in fact, an insane person. 10/10 would pace around room shouting nonsense about what could be the next thing to do while my wife laughs at my frustration. And I will never look at a black statue and staircase the same ever again, certainly not without the most extreme level of distrust for sure…
if you're the right kind of person for this game, i'm forever jealous of you. puzzle games aren't my thing, but i make exceptions for real gems (outer wilds, portal, etc). make no mistake, this is a GEM. and genuinely up there with my previous examples as absolutely genre pushing and important. I also had an awful time with it. this is the only game I can think of that actually defeated me. maybe i just don't like sokoban, maybe im kinda dumb, but i had zero fun here. the steam page tells you to take breaks or look up hints if you get stuck on something, and boy did i take breaks. and boy did i look up hints. i started having even less fun with the game. eventually i cracked and watched the super eyepatch wolf video essay on this game, spoiling everything for myself and eradicating any potential fun and interest i could've had for the foreseeable future with void stranger. utter, hopeless defeat for a niche gamer like me. void stranger made me feel so bad i almost made this a negative review, i feel like i was a happier person before it. but in a weird way, i feel like this experience was still something so unique and special that it was worth the 12 bucks. take this review as a warning that you are getting into something unlike anything else, and you might have a reaction not too different from mine. but you HAVE to take the red pill and find out, even if ignorance is bliss
Void Stranger is incredible, BUT I highly recommend following one of the steam spoiler free walkthroughs, otherwise your playthrough may be painful... if you don't find the deeper parts of this game on your own. The comparisons to Outer Wilds, Tunic, Blue Prince, etc. are pretty accurate, as the puzzles are more than what is before your eyes. Look for secrets, solve puzzles, and learn more about this world. If you stick with it, you'll have a fantastic time. Don't ask how I know.
Play this game however feels best for you; JUST play it. When you hit a wall, and you will hit a wall, use a guide or talk to people about it. If you are scared of the genre, or not a puzzle person, try it anyway. I was, too. It is well worth seeing as much of this game as one possibly can; don't give up and don't be afraid of help. Blind is better for this, but the journey is what matters.
