if you're the right kind of person for this game, i'm forever jealous of you. puzzle games aren't my thing, but i make exceptions for real gems (outer wilds, portal, etc). make no mistake, this is a GEM. and genuinely up there with my previous examples as absolutely genre pushing and important. I also had an awful time with it. this is the only game I can think of that actually defeated me. maybe i just don't like sokoban, maybe im kinda dumb, but i had zero fun here. the steam page tells you to take breaks or look up hints if you get stuck on something, and boy did i take breaks. and boy did i look up hints. i started having even less fun with the game. eventually i cracked and watched the super eyepatch wolf video essay on this game, spoiling everything for myself and eradicating any potential fun and interest i could've had for the foreseeable future with void stranger. utter, hopeless defeat for a niche gamer like me. void stranger made me feel so bad i almost made this a negative review, i feel like i was a happier person before it. but in a weird way, i feel like this experience was still something so unique and special that it was worth the 12 bucks. take this review as a warning that you are getting into something unlike anything else, and you might have a reaction not too different from mine. but you HAVE to take the red pill and find out, even if ignorance is bliss
There are those that play Outer Wilds, the Blue Prince and Tunic. And then there's you, the weirdo, that plays Void Stranger. This isn't an indictment against your tastes or the aversion to the mainstream. Instead, it's a welcome into the obscure, the esoteric, and the punishing. Please allow me to introduce one of my favorite games and why you should play it, even if that recommendation comes with a heavy asterisk. The Comparisons: The best way that I can describe Void Stranger, is that it's weirdly specific and obtuse like a Lucas Pope game, while having a lot of charms like an old Treasure title. It is filled with the mentally masochistic layers of detail like an in-depth escape room, all while it's delivered in a distinct monochromatic artstyle that makes the entire experience feel like a forbidden, cursed Game Boy cartridge. The Warnings: This is a game that's unabashedly honest about what it is: It's a sokoban game, which will already filter a good 95% of Steam players. It isn't a simplistic novelty Sokoban like Helltaker, so don't let the cute girls fool you. (But don't let them deter you, either!) This is a long-form game like old Nintendo titles. You WILL get filtered. You WILL get mad. You WILL put it down at some point for one of those two reasons, and that's okay. Don't be afraid to embrace your inner schizophrenic and write down your chicken-scratches of codes, symbols, puzzles and theories. In fact, this game encourages and rewards that behavior, all the way down to a lore standpoint. The Advice: If for some reason, you get hardwalled to the point of being seemingly stuck and you need guidance, spoiler-free walkthroughs do exist, but make that a final option because exploration, ah-ha moments of clarity, and story exposition are directly tied to the discovery of mechanics. It's an Outer Wilds scenario where literally the entire game is based on knowledge and learning, where even the most oblique details can alter your entire perception. If you rob yourself of that, then you've stripped yourself of an epiphany that you're entirely capable of reaching, only to be cursed with knowledge that wasn't your own to gain. You can absolutely do this. It may take you three solid months like it did for me, but don't give up. After all was said and done, this has become one of the hardest recommendations that I could ever make for my friends, while also becoming one of the hardest recommendations that I could ever make for my friends. void stranger is the game design expression of using every part of the animal. mechanical depth is built not through high-complexity interlocking systems but through the process of taking a simple action and zooming in, and zooming in, and zooming in , until you've learned the shape of every atom and know how they feel between your fingers. the precise distance your character moves when changing tiles is important. the empty space to the left of where you solved a puzzle is important. the animation for opening a treasure chest is important. the background art just outside of the playable area is important. the exact spacing of the numbers on the UI is important. pausing the game and exiting the game are both mechanically important, and both for different reasons. in this game i replayed a large section after turning the music volume all the way down in the options menu because i thought doing that might reveal something. it didn't. but it could've . why not? this game can do anything. the intense examination and re-examination of everything void stranger presented to me inspired a kind of wonder of the possibility of video games i didn't think i could feel anymore. i am still thinking about void stranger two years later.
