Appears to be: Stylish cynical decadent detective pastiche. Turns out to be: A wholesome experience where you get to thanklessly save others in real time without ever letting them know it was you. Given your outfit and complicated relationship with clocks, I have reason to believe you're playing as the Bachelor from Pathologic . Actually, having said that, I would probably like to retract my 'wholesome' point, please.
I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to be greeted by what looked, at least to me, like a miniature version of BioShock’s character design language when I first started the game. In those opening minutes, the aesthetic jump struck me as something like going from Persona 5 to Persona 5 Tactica, and making the same connection between BioShock and The Sexy Brutale amused me enough to occasionally pull my attention away from the game itself. Of course, the resemblance never went quite that far. Had we been injecting the murderous "little staffs" with steroid-laced Plasmids and “rescuing” them before they could butcher the snobs, then perhaps I would have had a case. Thankfully we do no such thing. Anyway, on to the review. I’ve always been very fond of puzzle games, although most of what I’ve played has belonged more squarely to the logic-puzzle side of the genre. I haven’t spent nearly as much time with these deduction games where puzzles and mystery are woven together, but almost every time I play one, I end up wondering why I haven’t played more of them. The Sexy Brutale may well be one of the first games of this kind that I actually carried all the way through to the end, and I’m very glad I did. It takes the time-loop mechanic, folds it neatly into a mixture of detective work and investigation, and then, when I was expecting little more than a clever mechanical exercise, manages to tie its story together in the finale/s with surprising elegance. All it really needed to do was press the right button in my brain. That alone would have been enough. But there is something particularly satisfying about leaving the table after having been served a genuinely good meal as well. Here’s hoping more games like this get made and that I manage to find them.
I absolutely ADORED this game, and its mechanics. I found The Sexy Brutale extremely stylish, fun, and fascinating. The lore within this game is INSANE, I'm the type of person who tends to try to skip over reading anything unnecessary but with the mystery of this game, it drove me to investigate and question everything I found. Some things were necessary for progression, and some were just for flavor and deepening your understand of the place but I enjoyed all of the information they gave me. The gameplay mechanics are also relatively straight forward, and a lot of things you can figure out by trying things but I do remember some moments where I felt very lost. I played the entirety of OG Tomb Raider without using a guide, but I do think I might've consulted one for one or two moments in this game. I'd have to check my VOD, because I'm not 100% sure I did, but I know for the very least it's hard to track what collectibles you do and don't have, and that led to me taking a ton of time consulting a guide on how to figure that out because there's too many to search for them all again. That's the main reason I put the gameplay at 3 stars. You don't NEED all of them, but they unlock an alternative ending so I really wanted to see it, and it was honestly better than the actual ending we see in the mainline game. I loved the story of this game and all of the mystery it built, but the love for the story shattered with its finale. It wasn't completely unexpected but SPOILER ALERT I hate the idea of "it was all a dream" and there's VERY few times that I've seen it well executed. For that reason, I would still recommend playing this game, but I don't see anyone being satisfied by the ending and I find the whole point of a mystery is to find the answers. When the answers are dissatisfying then it can really soil the experience. I think the music alone is actually a reason to play this game, and the visuals are stunning, the gameplay is fun (albeit frustrating with some moments you have to line up and figure out perfectly) but it's not a bad experience in the slightest if you're not trying to 100% and if you don't mind a bad ending. I think it's because it being a dream really detracted from my experience and made me wonder how MUCH of it was real. That's the main reason the ending bothered me was because it took away from the fantasy of The Sexy Brutale.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I must admit, the puzzles left a little to be desired, as sometimes it was overly-simple to solve a murder, and some abilities felt underutilized, but I also recognize that puzzles are incredibly difficult to construct in a narrative like this. The time loop can make the game drag a bit, but I felt for the most part I could spend the time either looking for collectibles, reading on the lore and secrets provided in the game, or looking at bits of dialogue that I hadn't been able to see in previous loops. That being said, I LOVED the world building. With how little time we are able to spend with the characters, there's still lots you can grasp of their personality and small details that link them together. I wish there had been more cross-murder interactions, but I understand why that was avoided. The ending recontextualized the entire game in a way that made me appreciate the game more--though I can understand why it would be disappointing for others. I think of the Sexy Brutale is an acquired taste. It certainly won't please everyone, but if it fits your niche, you will truly love this little gem.
The Sexy Brutale was always sold to me as "one of the best time loop games of all time" and I genuinely do not understand the hype. Like, it's not a bad game, but having played it, I found it incredibly... underwhelming? Maybe I should have played it closer to when it was originally released, before we had games like Outer Wilds, Grunn or Unheard. The Sexy Brutale is a casino with all sorts of other wings and parts to the house, where in one day all guests of the house are murdered over the course of 12 hours. You have to explore the house and prevent these deaths by learning how they died and finding a way to avoid it. On paper I think this can be really interesting - I thought I would get to explore the whole house all at once, where all of these characters interact with each other, and then pick which person I want to observe, and figure out one of multiple ways to save them. And then, I imagined, I would have to play a final perfect run, where I would have to save all of the guests in one go. This is not the case with this game. The game has a linear progression of who you have to save next, with all other areas of the house still closed off. The guests of the different cases BARELY interact with each other, if at all. And there is only one set solution for each puzzle, which never felt clever to me - it's simply a case of "have you looked at all interactable items in the area?" and if yes, you probably already know what to do. (Or if you don't - there is a 90% chance it's because you missed an interactable item somewhere and can now scramble to find it!) The solutions aren't very fun or satisfying, and on top of it they are all really spacey in a way where it always feels like you are just a person accidentally pressing the correct button at the correct time. Generally, the actual gameplay almost feels like an afterthought to the story that the developers had in mind. Except for the ending, nothing about the game struck me as really memorable - the characters are rather one-note, the cases are all rather straightforward, the environments are all kind of same-y, and the time loop is simply there so you can see the events play out once or twice. The artstyle also really wasn't my cup of tea. I still had fun playing through most of it, but I genuinely don't get the praise this game gets. The story drags on a bit towards the end, though I liked some of the later levels in the game. If you want to buy it, it's a solid game, but not very outstanding.
