July 2025
Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is a Dynasty Warriors 7 + Samurai Warriors 3 cross-over hack and slash game. Pro: - A huge amount of content. There are 8 story mode chapters + a lot of bonus content. Some battles scenarios are variations of the same map, but they all have something that makes them stand out. You'll be busy for a long time even if you only want to beat every scenario once on the lowest difficulty. It took me 30 hours just to clear the first 4 story chapters. - An enormous roster of 144 characters. Each character has a unique combat moveset, is fully voice acted, etc. - Fun local 2-player split-screen coop. A big selling point if you have someone to play with in person. - Fun gameplay challenges. I actually lost some story mode battles on normal difficulty for a change. Hard and Chaos high rank levels are tough, even foot soldiers will deal good damage to you. Hardest are the battles where you have the objective to keep multiple allies alive (they die = you lose). - The majority of the soundtrack is great. It features music from the original games (including older titles). In "Free Mode" you get to pick which track you want to listen to during the battle. - Fun interactions between characters of different franchises. - Downloadable player-edited scenarios. The tool is relatively limited, but you can do things like editing voice lines, replacing officers and their portraits, turning all enemy soldiers into tigers, changing the battle time limit, etc. - It uses the same weapon fusion system as Warriors Orochi 2, which is neat. Adds some combat customization and steady power progression. - Samurai and Dynasty Warriors characters share equal screen time. The older games strongly favored the Dynasty Warriors cast, which probably upset the Samurai Warriors fans. Props to the Koei devs for paying attention. - You can skip all the cutscenes and dialogue segments. It is relevant since you'll replay scenarios. - Gallery mode has a lot of stuff. Individual character battle animations, artworks, cutscene records and even text summaries of the old Warriors Orochi 1-2 story. The only thing missing is a summary of the original character stories, but they want you to play DW7 and SW3 instead of just reading a wiki, which is fair I guess. - Lots of unlockable costumes, including some outlandish or goofy looking things that you wouldn't expect and outfits that the characters wore in the older games. Con: - It is a Playstation 3 port at heart. Alt+tab causes the game to crash in fullscreen mode and using a monitor with high refresh rate makes special effects glitch out (you have to set your monitor to 60hz to fix it). - The game crashes every couple of hours in general. I think you can prevent it by closing and restarting the game every ~60 minutes or so, but I'm not sure. - Using the team attack skill while on a horse can get you stuck in terrain, which makes it a self-defeat button. - Warriors Orochi 3 assumes you know the story of Warriors Orochi 2, Dynasty Warriors 7 and Samurai Warriors 3. You'll have no idea what's going on if you didn't play any of those (but only DW7 is available on Steam). - Most characters don't get a fleshed out storyline. - It is Dynasty Warriors 7 combat. I much prefer Warriors Orochi 1-2 combat (=Dynasty Warriors 5). DW7 is too crowded and chaotic. You often lose track of your character in the masses and your invulnerable Musou attack oneshots everything. Hardly anything can kill you on normal difficulty, except for the Musou attacks of enemy officers, which may oneshot you. - Somewhat grindy. It's not so bad if you always stick to the same characters, but the game encourages you to switch characters often and EXP sharing is greatly limited. - No English voice acting. Samurai Warriors 3, D.W.7 and W.O.2 all had English voices available. It is relevant because you can't always pay attention to the text in the middle of combat. - Audio for mid-battle cutscenes is tied to "SFX Volume" instead of "Voice volume", while all other dialogue is tied to "Voice volume". Meaning if you lower the SFX Volume to be able to hear the music over the death screams of foot soldiers and whatnot, then the mid-battle cutscenes are barely audible. - The game doesn't autosave your battle preparation and hub progress on departure. You have to save manually via the options menu. - It takes ages for the game to open the "Musou Battlefields" menu (where you download scenarios edited by other players). Neutral: - Gauntlet Mode can range from "fun" all the way to "completely miserable". Most importantly, it depends on whether or not you paid attention in the tutorial. Your goal is to unlock "formations" by recruiting characters via the "Mystic" npc. Some formations reveal the escape portal from the start (by pressing R3). Without those, Gauntlet Mode isn't enjoyable. - In general, I have mixed feelings about Gauntlet Mode as endgame content. It feels more like an overblown minigame. Much of the Gauntlet Mode combat is about cheesing enemies that will just oneshot you if you fight them the normal way. - Well implemented guest characters, in terms of gameplay, but I don't like the map additions like modern day office buildings. Feels out of place. - The original release of Warriors Orochi 3 had issues. It took them years to polish it up with a plethora of updates and DLC. That's all included here however, it really is the "Ultimate Definitive Edition". - The game is more complicated than older Warriors games, but not so much that I'd call it a problem. - The game looks good... for a game that originally released on Playstation 3. - The menu controls for confirm and cancel are in reverse, which is odd especially because they knew it would irritate people, since they put an option in the controls menu to switch it back to normal. - There is a pvp mode, but I didn't try it, so I can't comment on it. I only know that Warriors Orochi 2 pvp was a mess. It's not a game that you buy for the pvp. Verdict: Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is a real treat for the fans. I highly recommend it if you liked one of the Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors games. You'll be out of the loop as a newcomer, but that doesn't have to stop you. It may even be the best Koei Musou Warriors game available on Steam, although the technical issues of the PC port put a damper on it.

If you've ever dreamed of seeing 145 legendary warriors from ancient China, feudal Japan, and mythic realms clash against hordes of enemies—and win—Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate Definitive Edition is your battlefield. This isn’t a subtle game. It’s a wild, ridiculous, and endlessly satisfying musou experience that’s equal parts fan service and action overload. But underneath the absurd numbers and explosions is a surprisingly deep system, a massive content pool, and an earnest love letter to fans of Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and everything in between. The plot is pure anime-level chaos: after the world is ravaged by a giant hydra, the last remaining warriors team up with a time-traveling mystic to rewrite history and save their fallen allies. It’s convoluted but fun, acting as an excuse to mash together heroes from multiple timelines and universes—including guest stars like Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) and Sophitia (Soulcalibur). Don’t expect serious drama. Expect gods, demons, and samurai slicing through legions of soldiers while discussing the fate of reality between combo chains. The core gameplay is classic musou: pick your favorite warrior (or three—you can switch on the fly), dive into the battlefield, and defeat thousands of enemies in glorious style. Every character has unique combos, specials, and ultimate Musou attacks, and the game rewards experimentation and mastery. What Ultimate Definitive Edition does well is layering this with depth: -Character customization through skill trees, weapon fusion, and leveling. -Team mechanics, letting you build synergistic trios with unique tag-team moves. -DLC content baked in, adding dozens of new scenarios, costumes, weapons, and challenge modes. -Gauntlet Mode, where you command a team of five in a survival-style battle system. It’s a lot—but in a good way. The game never runs out of things to do. Originally released over a decade ago, WO3 Ultimate isn’t going to blow you away with modern graphics—but this Definitive Edition runs beautifully on modern hardware. The framerate is stable (even with hundreds of enemies on-screen), the textures are cleaned up, and load times are fast. It’s not a visual marvel, but it’s smooth and functional, which is all it needs to be for the carnage to flow. You can tackle most of the game solo or in co-op, both locally and online. Playing with a friend amps up the fun and strategy, especially in the more chaotic stages or challenge missions. And with the sheer number of characters, side stories, unlocks, and modes, replayability is virtually endless. For all its content and charm, Warriors Orochi 3 won’t convert people who dislike the musou formula. The gameplay loop is repetitive by nature: move to an area, wipe out enemies, defeat an officer, repeat. The narrative is campy, and the UI can feel overwhelming at times with its dozens of menus and submenus. But fans know exactly what they're signing up for—and this version delivers it better than ever. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate Definitive Edition is the biggest, boldest, and most refined entry in the Warriors franchise to date. It’s a perfect celebration of Koei Tecmo’s hack-and-slash legacy, with enough content to last for dozens—if not hundreds—of hours. It's not subtle, it's not balanced, and it's definitely not quiet. But it is a blast. Unapologetically over-the-top, endlessly replayable, and the ultimate musou playground. Rating: 8/10

First thing you should know about is that this game has an annoying issue when your monitor's refresh rate is not set to 60hz or lower many effects from the characters you play will look wrong & "blacked out." So remember to switch your refresh rate to 60hz right before starting the game and switching it back after playing! ------------ Often considered the best game out of the Warriors Orochi series and for good reason. Warriors Orochi 3 finally comes to PC as "Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate Definitive Edition" It probably won't bother you but despite the previous Warriors Orochi games, WO3 only has Japanese voice acting. This version of the game contains most of the content & DLC from "Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate" game where it includes multiple new characters like Xu Shu from Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires and crossover characters like Sophitia from Soulcalibur as well as new storylines regarding the origins of Orochi and the schemes of Tamamo which continues the story from one of the endings of Warriors Orochi 3. The gameplay is typical of Musou games but features a 3-man team you can tag-in and control. Enabling you to switch characters on the fly, even during attacks allowing you to perform a large variety of combos and cover weaknesses of certain characters with other characters' strengths. You can even have all of your team out at the same time to fight. As this game came out before Dynasty Warriors 8, Samurai Warriors 4, and Warriors Orochi 4, it does not feature Aerial Musou/ultimate attacks and the like but Special Aerial attacks are here. The story is this game's main strength in my honest opinion. Following the events of Warriors Orochi 2, the unstoppable 8-headed Hydra appears several years later with a newly formed Demon army and nearly destroys the DW & SW heroes but the remaining heroes are saved by the Mystic, Kaguya, and with her time travel ability the heroes are able to go back in time and slowly work towards saving their future. There are over 145 characters and each character is categorized in 4 types: Power, Speed, Technique, and Wonder. Each having their own passive or active skill that further differentiate their capabilities but due to the mindless hack-n-slash nature of the game, you'll likely just brute force everything anyways. There's also a Weapon Ranking system where you replace your weapons with better weapons up to 5-stars and modify them with extra effects like increased attack range or having a chance to instantly kill lower health enemies. Characters cannot switch weapon types/movesets like in DW7. Character interactions are mainly done through scripted combat encounters and Bond conversations for specific combination of characters back at camp. Since there are over 145 characters, it can take some serious time and investment to get through all the dialogue. Personally, I don't really know much about the Samurai Warrior characters so much of the dialogue and references about them went over my head and at the time of the game's release there has not been a Samurai Warriors game in some time which is very apparent when you compare the models and textures between the Dynasty Warriors with the Samurai Warriors. It's especially noticeable with the majority of the alternate and DLC costumes favoring DW characters. There's a "Musou Battlefield" mode where you can edit existing stages/missions and replace characters with other characters or change sound effects or add combat conditions but it's really limited and honestly a waste of time even for the most hardcore. "Duel Mode" was introduced in "Warriors Orochi 3: Hyper" where you can do 3v3 battles against the AI or another local player. It also features a Strategy Card system that you can utilize during the battles much like strategems from the other musou games but the gameplay is incredibly unbalanced and pretty infuriating if you ever sink your teeth into it. "Gauntlet Mode" was introduced in "Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate" which features a gauntlet of stages you go through with a 5-man team instead of the usual 3-man team. It's intended for end-game players and recommended for those who have multiple max-level characters to do as you wade through enormous amounts of enemies with increasing difficulty while exploring the map to find the exit onto the next stage using formations that grant passive and/or active effects. I did not understand the mechanics of Gauntlet mode nor did I find "running around looking for an objective" fun to play and I only played it as it is required to unlock the final character. A small gripe but despite the small variety of mounts offered in the game, one mount is clearly the best by far and you'll never not use it. Anyone who is familiar with Dynasty Warriors will already know what I'm talking about. Despite the kind of pointless game modes that were added on over the years and my rose-tinted glasses for the original release back on the Xbox 360, I still think this game's story and the expanded story holds up to this day and are worth experiencing. If this game is $20 USD or less, I don't think you'll regret buying it.

This is by far in my opinion one of the best Koei Warriors games ever. There's over 100 characters to choose from and a lot of stages in Story Mode. To add onto that there's Gauntlet Mode which is a survival mode that gets harder the more enemies you defeat. Plus this has most of the DLC costumes, stages and music and for it's price is definitely worth it.
