Firstly: I am a big fan of the warship gunner and the ops series and I was totally happy to find a new try on a remake / successor of those games. To some extent *Waves of Steel* has managed to capture the nuances of its predecessors. Unfortunately, the developers haven’t quite managed to meet the already high standards set by them. I bought it for a regular price - and I'm ok with that.. The missions are nicely designed. There aren’t that many of them, so I would have liked to see a DLC or an editor. The ship editor is clear and easy to use, though it’s kept very basic. The music fits the game quite well and the soundeffects are fine too. I would have really liked the ship graphics to be closer to those in Warship Gunner or Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought, which was probably not the developers’ goal (more of an arcade style) or a greater leverage in the editor. In terms of gameplay, it reminds me a lot of the Warship Gunner series—which I think is really great. I found the characters implementation on the ship crew side to be very weak. On the other hand, I found the “villains” a bit cooler. I really liked the ability to use mods, which are conveniently available in the Workshop. This brings the game even closer to the Warship Gunner series feeling. Kudos to the developers and especially to the modders. Replayability is somewhat limited by the small number of missions, the lack of difficulty levels, and the short-lived hunt for better items. The Warship Gunner series handled this better in my opinion (items, money, etc.)—though that was likely not the developers’ focus. In my opinion, real-world political considerations don’t belong in games, at least not the way they were implemented here (BLM, LGBTQ). So I took advantage of the modding options and removed all the distracting/nasty elements (all ship crew characters, background images), replacing them with cool graphics that are closer to the Warship Gunner series. I am not an artist, so thanks to an ai helper. Since I don't have much time to play, it's perfect for me to quickly play a round of Waves of Steel. One last thing I should mention is, that this game runs perfectly on linux. No crashes in v1.03,
Honestly, a surprisingly little gem It may looked graphically very subpar, a little half cooked on many aspects, but it is just fun You wanna design the most sick or improbable vessel to ever set sail? You can, the ship editor is quite simple (even too much, forget about symmetry, some hull and parts have weird little issues), a couple of modder created a few pack to add some variety (I was tired to have the classic US double 5inch on every ship) Maybe the progression and parts unlock needed a couple of minute in the oven, but it's fine. Maybe some weapons are a little too weird.... but wait to look a the boss.. I just loved how the creator just went more and more bananas going on in the late levels! Plus work great on the Deck, perfect if you wanna kill 10 minutes mindless
I have had so much fun with this game. It does a great job of setting out to just be fun and not take itself too seriously, and absolutely nails it. I really appreciate how customisable the experience for adjusting difficulty level too. In addition to the fun combat though, I have lost so many hours to shipbuilding, loving the experience of building each new ship and seeing how many new big guns and support weapons I could fit on it without going over the weight limit. The game doesn't force you to refit or make a new ship nearly as often as I did, but I ended up doing it very often just because I enjoyed it so much. The shipbuilder also gives you the option of unlocking all technologies or removing the weight limit if you want to just go crazy - something I opted to not take advantage of while I was still playing the main plot, but now that I'm through it I'm looking forward to building some truly ridiculous things. It's a super fun game with a lot of heart, and the inclusion of various pride flags as default options you can fly from your ship if you wish is something that really warmed my heart to see, with the world being such a hostile place lately.
Graphics: 7/10 It's fair for a small studio (which TMA Games is). No reflections or stand-out effects but it also runs on a potato. Sound: 6/10 There are independent volume leveling options and the music is nice, but the sounds didn't pack the oomph I'm used to from naval combat games. It doesn't measure up to Warship Gunner, but it's also cheaper and actually available. Gameplay and Design: 8/10 For a game which clearly shot for nostalgia and a vibe like Warship Gunner, it stuck the landing where it counts. The tech tree is smaller (though I'm thinking back to Warship Gunner 2) and some of the levels - especially the level you have to sail inside, and the second stage of the Nidhoggr boss fight - felt like they hadn't been properly playtested and I had to knock down the difficulty and try several ship redesigns. Reworking your ship is just a part of the slightly more arcady take on naval combat this and Warship Gunner both have, though. Good tactics can't make up the difference between your starter destroyer and endgame fleets. Fans of Warship Gunner will like it, but for others be aware it's a small development studio making a spiritual successor and while it's not as good, it leans more into its own simple, arcady fun. It could have used a slower difficulty ramp-up over a longer, more serious campaign, but the action with customizable ships is there. Recommended if you like customizable vehicles and naval action but aren't looking for a strict simulator. Best on discount.
