Really scratched that itch for a WW2-style action-focused naval battle game, although the game does have fantasy craft like flying battleships, etc. Game has a decent length, the ship customization is accessible and fun too (do you add more armour to your cruiser or another 8-inch gun?), lightweight system requirements, and runs very well on Steam Deck. In addition to story missions, there is an extra mode that lets you create levels, allowing you to adjust the number and type of craft etc. Either way, there's nothing quite like unleashing a spread of torpedoes and taking out several ships at once. TL;DR if you like the idea of playing World of Warships or WarThunder's naval battles, but aren't fussed about the realism, this should pique your interest.
**"If Warship Gunner and Ace Combat had a child with an arcade cabinet, it would be Waves of Steel."** Waves of Steel ended up being one of those hidden gems that completely surprised me. At first glance it looks like a simple indie naval combat game, but after spending time with it, I realized there's a ridiculous amount of depth packed into it. If you've ever wanted to command a battleship loaded with enough firepower to make physics question its own existence, this game absolutely delivers. The gameplay strikes a fantastic balance between accessibility and depth. It's easy enough to jump in and start blasting enemy fleets within minutes, but the more you play, the more the customization systems open up. Building your own warship is easily the star of the show. You're constantly unlocking new hulls, weapons, utilities, and experimental technology, letting you create anything from a nimble destroyer covered in torpedoes to an absurd floating fortress armed with railguns, lasers, missile batteries, and enough anti-aircraft guns to erase the sky. What impressed me most is that experimentation is actually rewarded. Instead of forcing one "correct" build, the game encourages you to try weird combinations and discover strategies that fit your playstyle. Every new unlock feels meaningful. The campaign is also much better than I expected. Rather than endless random battles, you get a series of varied missions that constantly introduce new objectives, enemy types, and memorable boss encounters. One mission you're escorting allies through dangerous waters, the next you're fighting giant superweapons that feel straight out of an over-the-top anime. The game embraces its alternate-history setting and never takes itself too seriously, which gives it a ton of personality. Enemy variety deserves special praise. You're dealing with destroyers, cruisers, battleships, submarines, aircraft carriers, aircraft, missile platforms, and some truly ridiculous late-game creations. Every mission requires adapting your loadout instead of simply bringing the biggest guns. The combat itself is incredibly satisfying. Landing a perfectly timed broadside, watching enemy ships explode into debris, weaving between torpedoes, and unleashing every weapon system simultaneously never gets old. The controls feel responsive, and battles have just the right balance between arcade action and tactical positioning. Performance has been excellent throughout my time playing. Loading times are quick, the art style is colorful and readable, and despite the chaos on screen—with dozens of shells, missiles, explosions, aircraft, and ships everywhere—the game remains surprisingly smooth. Another thing I really appreciate is how much care clearly went into quality-of-life features. Difficulty options are flexible, controls are customizable, and there are plenty of accessibility settings that let players enjoy the game at their own pace. It feels like a game designed by people who genuinely wanted everyone to have fun. Is it perfect? No. The graphics won't compete with AAA naval simulators, and if you're looking for hardcore realism, this isn't that kind of game. This is unapologetically an arcade naval action game where fun always comes first. Once you accept that, it's incredibly difficult to put down. For fans of classics like *Naval Ops: Warship Gunner*, or anyone who enjoys building ridiculous vehicles and testing them in increasingly insane battles, Waves of Steel is an easy recommendation. It's creative, charming, surprisingly content-rich, and offers dozens of hours of satisfying progression. **Pros:** * Excellent ship customization system * Addictive arcade naval combat * Creative missions and memorable boss fights * Huge variety of weapons and equipment * Great sense of progression * Smooth performance * Plenty of replay value **Cons:** * Story isn't the main attraction * Graphics are modest compared to bigger-budget games * Can become delightfully chaotic during late-game battles **Final Verdict: 9.5/10** One of the most underrated indie games on Steam. If you've ever dreamed of building the most absurd battleship imaginable and sailing it into impossible odds, don't sleep on this one.
ITS PEAK, the shipbuilding is verry well done, and fun, so is the gameplay. my only complaint is that there are no bigger battleships in the game than the battlemaran. Game is fun, and works well, but can stress test ur pc if u are going into a custom game with 840 ships in it. 10/10
Firstly: I am a big fan of the warship gunner and the ops series and I was totally happy to find a new try on a remake / successor of those games. To some extent *Waves of Steel* has managed to capture the nuances of its predecessors. Unfortunately, the developers haven’t quite managed to meet the already high standards set by them. I bought it for a regular price - and I'm ok with that.. The missions are nicely designed. There aren’t that many of them, so I would have liked to see a DLC or an editor. The ship editor is clear and easy to use, though it’s kept very basic. The music fits the game quite well and the soundeffects are fine too. I would have really liked the ship graphics to be closer to those in Warship Gunner or Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought, which was probably not the developers’ goal (more of an arcade style) or a greater leverage in the editor. In terms of gameplay, it reminds me a lot of the Warship Gunner series—which I think is really great. I found the characters implementation on the ship crew side to be very weak. On the other hand, I found the “villains” a bit cooler. I really liked the ability to use mods, which are conveniently available in the Workshop. This brings the game even closer to the Warship Gunner series feeling. Kudos to the developers and especially to the modders. Replayability is somewhat limited by the small number of missions, the lack of difficulty levels, and the short-lived hunt for better items. The Warship Gunner series handled this better in my opinion (items, money, etc.)—though that was likely not the developers’ focus. In my opinion, real-world political considerations don’t belong in games, at least not the way they were implemented here (BLM, LGBTQ). So I took advantage of the modding options and removed all the distracting/nasty elements (all ship crew characters, background images), replacing them with cool graphics that are closer to the Warship Gunner series. I am not an artist, so thanks to an ai helper. Since I don't have much time to play, it's perfect for me to quickly play a round of Waves of Steel. One last thing I should mention is, that this game runs perfectly on linux. No crashes in v1.03,
