Do not play this game unless you play with the GWX Knight's Cross Edition megamod, which makes the game playable on modern systems and widescreen monitors. I've owned this game since its original release back in 2005, before steam existed. So let's just say Steam's estimate on my hours played is woefully inaccurate. I also play with the aforementioned (free) megamod and SH3 Commander which makes it playable outside of the Steam Client. My real playtime must run into a few thousand hours. When SH3 first game out in 2005 it was a fairly mediocre U-boat sim upgraded from its predecessor. But the vanilla game felt like an empty world, with empty ports, and although more immersive than its earlier renditions, it needed a lot of work. Then from the Subsim modding community came the Grey Wolves Expansion (GWX) which turned the game into far and away the best submarine simulator game ever made, if you don't mind playing the German side in the Battle of the Atlantic during WW2. SH4 shifted focus to the American side in the Pacific War, which just wasn't as interesting, and then SH5 went back to its roots giving us much better graphics, but a much crappier game that was more or less abandoned by the developers as soon as it was released. Even with megamods such as The Wolves of Steel (TWOS) keeping SH5 alive, it just wasn't the same. Never mind, we still had SH3 and the GWX expansion, right? But as time went on, computer systems got better, operating systems changed, monitors went widescreen, and SH3 even with GWX began to get old and not as functional on modern computers without an awful lot of work. For quite a few years it had slipped by the wayside and became all but a distant memory of how good things had once been. Fast forward to 2026 and thanks to the Subsim modding community's passion and dedication, the full glory of SH3 with GWX is perfectly playable again, and fully upgraded to widescreen monitors with the GWX Knight's Cross Edition megamod. SH3 is back on top! Do not play this game without it.

Without a doubt, this game is the best entry in the Silent Hunter series. In my humble opinion, no other installment captures the atmosphere of the third one. It’s a perfect blend of music, ambient sounds, crew voices, and the constant pressure from destroyers — a combination that keeps me coming back again and again. Like fine wine, this game only gets better with age. It reminds me of the days when Ubisoft still knew how to make truly great games. Thanks for my childhood — the best subsim ever!

9.0 /10 That rating is only for those of you that can understand what gaming was like from 1995 - 2005. If you're under 30 you won't like this game (Most likely). You see this game isn't about having the best graphics or non stop action and or FPS. This game is a simulation. It requires you to think and to use your brain in ways that some of you just have not experienced. That being said, if you have a good imagination and don't mind some mid-level graphics, what you will find here may just blow you away. You see this game (as I told my 30 year old son) has 10x more depth than anything modern they are putting out. The kids these days (for the most part) just don't have the attention span to learn how to play something like this let alone actually get immersed in it. If the idea of being a submarine Captain in WWII, hunting and stalking your prey and then running deep to escape into the black depths -before circling back and striking again- has any interest to you, then perhaps you may have just found a hidden gem that some of us old timers recall quite fondly.
