"Do you know the name Adol Christin?" (Note, a lot of the negativity around this game is the fact that shortly after the US got YS X, an enhanced version was announced. While shitty, below is based purely on the game itself.) For those who are not familiar, the YS series chronicles the adventures of Adol Christin, a wandering swordsman who's sole purpose in life is to explore the world. After his adventures were complete he recorded his thoughts in nearly 100 journals called "Travelouges" that were found years after he died. Each game in the series is framed as someone reading out of one of these "Travelouges". Ys X takes place early on in Adol's days. Having just finished his first adventure, he departs for his intended destination of Celceta only to be flung into an unexpected adventure in the area of Obelia Gulf. This being the 10th entry in the series, it's often asked if this can be a good starting point for newcomers, and my answer is yes. The only major references to past Ys games are mentions of the first two games, since timeline wise that's the only adventure Adol has been on. You wont be missing much if you jump right into this. As for the game itself, I quite liked it. Gameplay wise it's very similar to Ys VIII and IX, where you have basic attacks and skills to use, with some of Adol's being similar to skills used in previous games. The combat is fast, frantic and feels really good to play, just like the games before it. Here though there is a little twist. You get to play as Adol and one other character, Karja. She and Adol work in tandem to fight their foes, and I found that switching between them on the fly was really fluid and kept the combat's tempo going constantly. Compared to VII, VIII, and IX that had multiple party members. With those games I felt like I didn't make use of every character because there were simply too many. Here with only two characters to manage and use I found using them equally which was a plus for me. There is a skill tree of sorts. You collect or create gems to allot in nodes in a skill tree that can boost stats and give various passives. Here though I found that it didn't matter whatsoever in terms of giving you an edge in battle. I just threw whatever gems I had into the nodes and moved on and beat the game on Hard without any issues. Maybe I didn't give the time it needed to fully realize the potential. Oh well. You also spend some time sailing a ship, your main means of transportation through the world. If you find the ship traveling tedious, I did too at first. As you play on and upgrade the ship traveling gets a lot faster and more enjoyable. It doesn't take too long before you stop going slow as shit. Ship combat is also present and it was... fine. I don't have much to say about it other than it was there and it was passable. I didn't hate it but it could be a lot better. The final thing I'll say is that the later Ys games really do a good job at developing Adol as a protagonist and even though he is silent, I find myself connecting with him as a character more and more with every installment. The series does great at showing what he is thinking, what his past was like, and who he is as an individual. The places he goes and the people he meets always leaves a lasting impression one me, and makes me sad to see him leave everyone behind to go on his next adventure. It's hard to put into words, but if you jump into Adol's adventures yourself you will see what I mean. With the release of Proud Nordics coming up, there isn't word on when it will hit the US. To me it was worth the full investment but that's coming from a long time fan of the franchise. If you want to wait to see if Proud Nordics comes here before buying that's perfectly fine.

Just finished this game a few minutes ago. This game is EXTREMELY fun to play through and has a great soundtrack. There is a lot of sailing, sidequests, and interesting character. Even the ship battles don't really get boring. If you want a great RPG to play through pick this one up. Here's hoping Nihon Falcom makes a sequel after the events of Ys 9 or make a remake of Ys 5.

Great game, I personally enjoy it even more than 8. Great combat, good exploration, and an engaging story. A great YS game, a great action game, a great JRPG. Easy recommendation for me.

Ys X is a breath of fresh air in the franchise. Gone is the party system and damage types in favor of straight-up combat with two characters. The duo combat mode is advertised as being slower than solo, but honestly, it feels faster than solo. If you've never played an Ys game, this would be a good starting point.

I've been playing Ys (and Trails) for decades now, and it's easily one of my favorite JRPG series alongside Trails and Persona. It’s still surprising to me that Ys isn’t more popular in the West, but that’s a rant for another day. With Ys X, the series continues its tradition of smooth, fluid combat, a colorful cast, and epic, heart-pounding music. A heads-up, though: Chapter 1 is a bit of a slow burn, mainly serving as a tutorial. But once you unlock your full combat kit, the game really opens up. I’m a fan of the new Duo party system; it’s a refreshing shift from the old three-member setup. It feels like Falcom streamlined some of the previous complexities, keeping it distinctively Ys but giving it a fresh twist. On nightmare difficulty, the combat is tough without turning enemies into damage sponges, almost like an arcade-style souls-like, where dodging and blocking are emphasized differently from past games. The potion system is intriguing too. As you explore, you find bottles that you can fill with various potions, adding a bit of tension since your healing items are limited. Skills also return as Mana-driven attacks, and executing Duo skills is incredibly satisfying. So far, I’ve just finished Chapter 1, but I can see where this story is heading. The narrative feels like a blend of Ys VIII and IX, both of which had strong storylines. The focus on character dynamics, cast chemistry, and overarching mystery is still a staple. While there hasn’t been as much platforming as I’d like, I’m hoping that changes. The grapple from Ys IX makes a return and is used liberally in both combat and exploration. And as expected of Falcom, the soundtrack is top-tier. I recommend the Japanese voices over the English dub, which, unfortunately, doesn’t sound great. NIS’s localization has been a weak point in recent Ys games, and while it’s serviceable, the translations aren’t the most accurate. Even 2 hours into the game, I can give it a solid recommendation; especially after the ending of chapter 1 showed what Falcon really has in store for this game (I will update this review with my final thoughts once I've completed the game). It also runs really well on the steam deck. If you’re hesitant to jump into Ys X because it’s the 10th entry, don’t worry. Each Ys game is self-contained, so you don’t need to have played the previous titles. Each story is presented as a chronicle written by Adol, our main character, years after the events, so the games don’t follow release order. Ys X, for example, follows Ys II chronologically and takes place before Ys: Memories of Celceta (Ys IV). Any references to earlier games are usually just Easter eggs. If you’re a fan of action RPGs looking for something fresh with surprises around every corner, jump into Ys with this one (or really any of the previous titles here on steam).
