Its a good game for sure but it really does not hold up to the previous 2 entries in the series.

Great game. The most I liked about this game is the gameplay, exploration, and combat (Perfect Parry mechanism I love you). Epic bosses and interesting side story. Easily one of the best Ys I've ever played. Although the pacing of the story is kinda...too slow. The story is good don't get me wrong, but they keep the "Mystery" too long that in the early to mid game I find quite difficult to have "motivation" to beat the main story if you know what I mean. Thankfully the gameplay made me to keep playing :D

Gameplay-wise, the modern series (that is to say the current versions of the games available in the West) can roughly be divided into three kinds of games: the original duology with the bump combat system, the early games with sprite art and some platforming elements (Napishtim, Origins and Fhelgana), and then the modern fully 3D games with a three-character-party system which may or may not have some platforming elements. This one is the first entry since Ys Seven that changes the gameplay enough that it no longer quite fits with the previous games. Now instead of a three character party, it's just a duo and sailing is a big part of the game so that, instead of a village like in Ys VIII or an inn like in Ys IX, your "home base" is the ship itself. Fishing, crafting, cooking, upgrading gear, recruiting NPC's to offer services in your home base, side quests, reporting mapping and other exploration-related stuff, and other familiar mechanics from the immediate prequels are present here with a few tweaks. As for the story, this one goes back to Adol's early days adventuring with Dogi just after the events of Ys I & II as they sail along with Dr. Flair in search of new adventures and find themselves stranded in an unfamiliar island, though not because of the usual shipwreck. This time, it's due to a pirate raid. And of course, Adol almost immediately finds himself in the middle of some "chosen one" B.S. when a mysterious voice talking to him through a sea shell apparently bestows upon him the ability to wield mana, which allows him to kill the strange undead monsters that soon start attacking the settlements. If you liked Ys VIII and Ys IX, you'll probably like this one because it resembles them a lot. My only complaint is that, at least before you manage to upgrade it a bit, your ship is slow AF and the map of the region is huge. Once the story picked up some steam I really liked it. It felt like familiar without being a re-tread of a previous game, and the new co-protagonist Karja grew on me a lot as her character arc unfolded, so that by the end of the game I liked her just as much as I like my boys Adol and Dogi.

"Do you know the name Adol Christin?" (Note, a lot of the negativity around this game is the fact that shortly after the US got YS X, an enhanced version was announced. While shitty, below is based purely on the game itself.) For those who are not familiar, the YS series chronicles the adventures of Adol Christin, a wandering swordsman who's sole purpose in life is to explore the world. After his adventures were complete he recorded his thoughts in nearly 100 journals called "Travelouges" that were found years after he died. Each game in the series is framed as someone reading out of one of these "Travelouges". Ys X takes place early on in Adol's days. Having just finished his first adventure, he departs for his intended destination of Celceta only to be flung into an unexpected adventure in the area of Obelia Gulf. This being the 10th entry in the series, it's often asked if this can be a good starting point for newcomers, and my answer is yes. The only major references to past Ys games are mentions of the first two games, since timeline wise that's the only adventure Adol has been on. You wont be missing much if you jump right into this. As for the game itself, I quite liked it. Gameplay wise it's very similar to Ys VIII and IX, where you have basic attacks and skills to use, with some of Adol's being similar to skills used in previous games. The combat is fast, frantic and feels really good to play, just like the games before it. Here though there is a little twist. You get to play as Adol and one other character, Karja. She and Adol work in tandem to fight their foes, and I found that switching between them on the fly was really fluid and kept the combat's tempo going constantly. Compared to VII, VIII, and IX that had multiple party members. With those games I felt like I didn't make use of every character because there were simply too many. Here with only two characters to manage and use I found using them equally which was a plus for me. There is a skill tree of sorts. You collect or create gems to allot in nodes in a skill tree that can boost stats and give various passives. Here though I found that it didn't matter whatsoever in terms of giving you an edge in battle. I just threw whatever gems I had into the nodes and moved on and beat the game on Hard without any issues. Maybe I didn't give the time it needed to fully realize the potential. Oh well. You also spend some time sailing a ship, your main means of transportation through the world. If you find the ship traveling tedious, I did too at first. As you play on and upgrade the ship traveling gets a lot faster and more enjoyable. It doesn't take too long before you stop going slow as shit. Ship combat is also present and it was... fine. I don't have much to say about it other than it was there and it was passable. I didn't hate it but it could be a lot better. The final thing I'll say is that the later Ys games really do a good job at developing Adol as a protagonist and even though he is silent, I find myself connecting with him as a character more and more with every installment. The series does great at showing what he is thinking, what his past was like, and who he is as an individual. The places he goes and the people he meets always leaves a lasting impression one me, and makes me sad to see him leave everyone behind to go on his next adventure. It's hard to put into words, but if you jump into Adol's adventures yourself you will see what I mean. With the release of Proud Nordics coming up, there isn't word on when it will hit the US. To me it was worth the full investment but that's coming from a long time fan of the franchise. If you want to wait to see if Proud Nordics comes here before buying that's perfectly fine.

-Ys 8 was incredible, from exploration to music and characters it was Falcom firing on all cylinders. -Ys 9 was pretty good but kinda flawed, and the party system was kinda starting to outstay its welcome. -Ys 10 is aaaaalmost incredible, the duo combat is a little more weighty and interesting, and the exploration is probably the best in the 3D games yet. Despite that, sometimes the story makes weird choices, and the Music is good but not their best. From a technical perspective this port is basically flawless, runs great, no framerate dips, and I experienced no crashes. it loads incredibly quickly, and there's a feature that lets you launch the game DIRECTLY into your most recent save!!! Also theirs a new version of the game coming out, people seem mad and they're probably right to be mad but that doesn't really change my opinion on THIS release of the game. 8.5/10
