i bought because of the cute main character. its hollow knight but cute. the devs are also hard at work and updates the game several times in a day. combat is fun and challenging, the time looping is quite interesting (i am not aware if there is any other metroidvania that does this). despite the looping, you rarely need to backtrack on previously-explored areas. the game tries unique traversal methods instead of the usual double jump and wall jump. based on the inventory, there's 8 of these to be unlocked. no contact damage. i always hated having to constantly keep track of how the boss moves so that i don't bump into them and get hurt. the game is very cheap, but there's way more content than the price suggests. 10 hours in and i believe im only about 30%+ into the game. i do explore, but not to 100% everything. soundtrack and english translation could be improved. but the music does kind of grow on me after awhile. overall, i like this just as much as hollow knight, if not more. i may use HK as comparison, but both games play differently. EDIT: the english translation has improved alot since i first posted this review. there's also been fixes to the soundtrack so that it loops more properly. please do give it a try, it's a really charming game.

Dragonloop was a pleasant surprise. I think any MV player should check it out, especially at its low price. Translation: On launch there were some complaints about bad/missing translations but they have significantly improved it. Occasionally I found some small things which still could be improved but it did not negatively impact my enjoyment of the game. The time loop mechanic: You start the game on “Day 1”. As you traverse the map you will find gates where you must progress a day to pass through. These points also act as checkpoints. You cannot progress further than “Day 5” and you must go back to day 1 after that. How this system works is that sometimes while traversing you need to think WHERE to go and WHEN to go there. A pathway to progress may be blocked on day 5 but not day 4 for example.. In practice how this commonly works is you will unlock abilities and shortcuts that allow you to progress through an area again in a different route allowing you to get to a given place on a new day. It sounds more complicated than it is because they give you an area map and a “time map” which shows you the flow of days you have taken to help you understand what “time order” you should do next. This mechanic made traversel feel very different to any other MV Combat: Combat is simple but fun with a basic slash. The bosses can do alot of damage and it takes awhile to heal so it is quite easy to die quite fast. You will gain a damage boost if you hit the enemy many times in a row rewarding aggression. In practice I think for the bosses you either die fast or kill the boss fast. Because you die fast it definately has a “just one more try!” feel when you die. The boss attacks are not super complicated but you definitely have to pay attention and learn how to dodge them. You also get a variety of equitable spells. There were a lot of them but I found mostly sticking with a floating sword that auto attacks for you. Some of the spells seemed quite similar, I think they could have reduced the number without losing anything: You find “Beads” via secrets/challenges in the game which can be used to upgrade different things like HP/Damage/etc. It allows you to re-assign these beads at checkpoints which is nice. Abilities: Without spoiling too much I enjoyed the variety and uniqueness of the abilities. Some of them are platforming focussed and some are used for puzzles. Most of them can be used during general traversal but some do function as keys. Even ones that are close to keys they find ways to make them a bit more interesting than that Sound: One of the small cons of the game. I found the music a bit tedious and some sound effects were missing. But I frequently play MVs on mute so it didnt bother me too much. This is a small solo team so it is understandable how this part can be lacking. Platforming: There is some tricky platforming but you dont have gauntlets of platforming challenge after platforming challenge, they are usually just small ones. They were enjoyable and you get some unique. Some platforming challenges were also partially puzzles Overall: I played the game for 15 hours and really enjoyed it! It was not a 100% playthrough. I think it is more unique than most MVs and worth checking out for fans of the genre. Its price is extremely cheap too. I think if the price was double it would still be a fair price

Redoing my review after 19 hours played and getting the True Ending. For the price, this is an amazing value experience and while it has a couple of issues, in many ways they are secondary to the core gameplay experience. - I originally had a gripe with the game's English localisation, but that's no longer an issue as I've spent a couple of weeks working with the devs revising their text for them. - The game audio/SFX are a bit lacking in places and could really do with some additional work. But the gameplay and systems, my Lord they just kept on going and opening up and I had so SO much fun with them! I went in with mediocre expectations and, frankly, came out thinking this is one of the best MV experiences I've had even WITH the flaws. It might lack the polish of HK, but in my honest opinion, its gameplay and systems are more fun. No contact damage — well telegraphed enemy and boss attacks instead. No hard checkpointing — a more interesting time corridor/temporary checkpoint system instead. No consumable potions/food for healing — a more thoughtful and tactical healing flower planting system instead. A solid and mechanically deep game with a fun time looping mechanic. Recommended.

Honestly im having a good time with this game. its a little on the easier side but im one of those people that likes backtracking to make sure i went through everything before moving on. I would like it if i was able to quickly skip through the soul realm etc. and just jump right to starting from a new time line because ive went to the wrong spot and had too go through all the loadiung screens again just to go to the right timeline start.

WARNING for English players: The translation is serviceable at best; you will find text boxes that haven't been translated, or character names changing because the translator didn't understand it was a name and not a word. An egregious one is when you die you have 2 options "Respawn At:" and "Respawn At:" so even a basic death screen doesn't have translations That said, I'm having fun.
