The game is good but don't buy it here if you have a phone that can run it, it has been planned for phone gameplay, and tends to pale in comparison with other PC games Gameplay: 8/10 Graphics & Sound: 6/10 Narration: 4/10 ✔️ Very fun roguelite mechanics with a surprising depth for its minimalistic aspect - the ability to give individual equipment to all your followers / summons really expands a lot on the various possibilities. ✔️ Nice deckbuilding elements and progression mechanics that reach a good middle ground between being able to customize your runs and still being submitted to the random aspect of the roguelite. ✔️ Cute graphics. ✔️ A bunch of unexpected environmental interactions that open up some welcome tactical possibilities. 💭 The general ergonomy of the game is... fine, but there's a bunch of minor issues, like some lack of clarity on the amount of items of a kind in your inventory, menus readjusting their position while they are already displayed making misclicks pretty easy, impossibility to cancel started exploration movements... Nothing too annoying, but the sum of it damages the user experience. ❌ The narration is existing, but not noteworthy in any aspect. I recommend it as a fun mobile game, that can be played off-network :) If you really want to play it on Steam, I guess you can, but you have a lot of options better adjusted to desktop gameplay than this game. I started playing it on PC, it immediately played like a mobile game which made me go look for it on App Store and here it was!

Hidden gem right here. Great replay value, intricate mechanics despite the simplicity. A few misses here and there, particularly trusting a bit too much of its design to "bouncing" enemies (good with weapons, absolutely not worth investing cards on it). Competitive leaderboards, lots of variety and playstyles. In all honesty, the DLC is not worth it.

This hits many of the itches you had being a nerd from the 90s, or oldschool dnd type. Has a blend of deck building, but its more like "spell slots" or limited resource as you don't automatically get your discard back like many slay the spire clones or similar. You have a bit of light party building with guardians you can pick up per run. Additionally you can equip all those that join you. I realized after playing a bit, due to how few guides there are, and basically its more or less obtuse what a good build is, that its the joy of it. Actually having to puzzle solve builds or tactics, retreat to scope out areas, and/or picking a primary hero you like is the main thing.

I'm pretty tired of roguelites forcing the player to grind to get to where they can play the real game. It was cute when Rogue Legacy did it in 2013. The novelty kept up for a while as the genre blew up, especially in the indie space. Nowadays, most roguelites feel like 10 hour games stretched out to 50+, padded with grinding unlocks before you can hope to win. Of course, there are roguelites that buck this trend, and they tend to garner glowing reviews. It's no wonder then that Abalon with it's Overwhelmingly Positive rating is one of those. The speed I'm unlocking content far suprasses what I can actually use. On top of that, this is a highly tactical, challenging RPG with and...deckbuilding...oh boy, another subgenre that's gotten stale. I typically ignore anything with deckbuilding because I've got Slay the Spire, Monster Train, and Chrono Ark to satiate those needs and they are still going strong years later. Hell, 2 of them have sequels now that I haven't even dipped into. But Abalon again does something cool. You don't get your full deck every fight. Cards you use stay in your discard until you use one of the limited resting spots on the map. Instead, you must manage your deck wisely, always trying to maximize efficiency without dying as you are limited to 20 cards in your deck. You can change these out with other cards you've acquired (or sell the bechwarmers) which makes it easy to "respec". While I'm on my 3rd run and haven't won yet (bouncing between hard and normal), I can honestly say that I'm losing because I didn't play well enough. Some of this is simply needing experience with the system, which is fine. What matters is: I haven't lost because I didn't unlock the "good cards" yet. (EDIT: I've now beat Hardcore with 2 different characters at level 1 so yeah, it's balanced fine). Oh, I also love acquiring d20s for the events. Gives it a D&D-lite-lite feel where you can roll for MEGA ADVANTAGE for a key event (like just dump 10 d20s to up the odds of rolling a 15+ for that key event). Anyway, great game, great modern roguelite. If I had to list cons, I don't care much for the art syle and music is just OK (but it's fitting background music). I'd love it if the lore felt less generic and more like a lived in world. But again, the gameplay more than makes up for this. The 3 hour runs are perfect length for the power progression it provides. There is a bit of a grind for unlocking higher level difficulties, but no worse than Heat progression in Hades or Ascension in Slay the Spire.

I enjoy the games out there trying to combine my favorite genres, rpg, deckbuilding and roguelike. This is another fun entry! In Abalon you pick a main character each run and then walk around a map gaining cards and other semi-permanent characters while fighting battles on tactical grids. It has a similar mechanic to dungeon crawlers where each room is an unknown encounter except in Abalon each map is a grid of square areas you walk into to uncover the map fog, however you can always retreat for free the first time you reveal a square. There are 3 maps per what I would call the standard run as well as different run types. RNG haters will likely not enjoy it as much since you have little control over what cards you get. As others have said, the meta progression is perhaps a bit slow and you may not win the first couple runs, but you can adjust the difficulty each run. It did take me a few runs to see the game open up more with unlocking cards and items and characters. After that I started enjoying the variety of characters and cards more. There isn't really a story so the rpg elements are more theme and level up progression. I'd say it mostly feels like a lighter rpg tactics game with cards instead of skills or timers and such. The demo was enough to interest me so I think you can likely tell if you would enjoy it from trying the demo. If you have played Our Adventurer Guild, it reminds me a bit of a simpler version of that and with cards instead of skills per character.
