The problem with Ace Combat is just convincing people to try it. A lot of people look at it and just see plane military game, and expect something vaguely CoD/BF flavored, but in jets. It couldn't be further from the truth. Ace Combat is more like Macross or Gundam than it is CoD. Sure, there's military jargon, battlefield chatter, you're using licensed planes, blah blah blah. But it's not on Earth, the geopolitics are completely nuts, there's lore that dates back to the first Ace Combat and Zero set in 1995, and all the way up to the 2040s in Ace Combat 3, which is even after 8. Shadowy corporations, AI takeovers, drones--but then all the way down to the most personal relationships and rivalries between fighter pilots on opposing nations, the people in those countries, anti-war messaging, I could go on and on and on. All of it is set to some of the best music you'll literally ever hear, ranging from classic rock to symphonic orchestra, half the time mingled together. The gameplay this time around is explained far better for newcomers this time with so many tutorials and pop-ups explaining how things work, what to focus on, there's even campaign training modes. It has a such a great weight and feel, looks fantastic, feels fantastic, and has surprising depth too. Choosing the right plane for the right mission, the right loadout of parts and customizations too, setting up your wingmen in theirs, interacting with your wingmen mid fight and giving orders and responses. All of that alongside basically a movie in cutscenes spread across thirty missions, each running about 15-35 minutes each. You get a LOT of excellence in the campaign for the price. Honestly, just... just TRY it. Try the first two hours, seriously. The vibe is immediately apparent, and I almost guarantee you'll get sucked in.
This game made me feel things I haven't felt from a game in a long time. Every time I thought it had reached its peak, it pushed even further. Honestly, most of the late-game missions could have been the finale and I wouldn't have complained, but it just kept raising the bar. It's rare to play something made with this much love and care. You feel it from start to finish.
Wow..... I'm new to the Ace Combat series with my intro being AC7. As much as I enjoyed Skies Unknown, Wings of Theve blows it out of the water. The gameplay, the VA, story, the promotional mini series and extras, the MUSIC, everything is just wonderful. Its so refreshing to see a game release complete. No delays, no missing content, not buggy. Project Aces so obviously put heart and soul into this game. AC7 may have gotten me into the series, but AC8 cemented me as a fan. o7
It's actually so peak. I tell people that while DCS wants to simulate the reality of dogfighting, Ace Combat wants to simulate the fantasy of it. And being a Japanese game, it has a lot of corny dialogue and incredibly obvious story writing but the story is really just a vehicle to create incredibly ridiculous set pieces to satisfy every dogfighting and shonen trope there is. What it lacks in sophisticated writing it completely makes up in pure AURA. It's a fun game that almost revels in how ludicrous it gets.
While I understand many people have issues with the multiplayer, crashes, or zero's preorder inclusion, my priority has always been the campaign. This is far and away the greatest Ace Combat game in the series, a title I often jokingly gave to Project Wingman, but this blows that and everything else out of the water. The music, the characters, the gameplay, the sound design; everything is the best that PA has ever done, and while there are some flaws, this has quickly and become one of my favorite games of all time.
