Advent Rising is a game I remember coming out right when the big titles like Halo Combat Evolved and Mass Effect were taking the gaming world by storm. Sadly the game was overshadowed by the other two titles and was left to collect dust - never to be taken back up by any other gaming company and continued as the in-game story was left to have a continuing trilogy. From my experience of playing the game back when it was new and now when it is a beloved classic and a blast from my gaming past, it is one I would recommend fellow gamers to try at least once for the story alone. The gameplay of Advent Rising is... unique. The developers seemed to enjoy the act of endlessly locking on to your enemies no matter where you looked. So long as they were close and in your field of view or actively near you, every light nudge of the camera would send you locking onto a target you didn't intend to target in the first place. This also goes for items that can be picked up via powers and thrown at enemies. This can cause issues for gamers, especially of today, as it heavily restricts how one intends to play and can make combat seem difficult if not frustrating to do. If the lock-on function wasn't so strong, I think the gameplay could be enjoyable for a game made in its respected time. As for the storyline of the game, its one I enjoyed. It touched on an idea that I thought would be very interesting to pursue but I will not say anything more here for I would hate to give away spoilers. What I will say is that it is a concept I would have liked to have seen further explored if the game was given a chance to blossom but as it stands, that will never be and the storyline will remain unknown.

It's really good. A bit frustrating at first due to a weird and outdated combat control scheme. But the characters and plot are so likeable you can put up with it. Would definitely recommend having a good mouse wheel to save your sanity, because you have to use it to scroll through items and targets.

I played this game a ton when I was a kid. It was clunky and lacked polish. Obviously it was rushed and was missing bits here and there. But something just clicked with me - the setting was interesting, storytelling and dialogues were great, soundtrack was PERFECT. I especially liked the skill progression system - you level up the skills by actually using them. And yes, this means you can jump in one place a thousand times and level up your jumping. I ended up beating the game maybe 10 times, on the highest difficulty, I memorized everything about it. Was really devastated it never got a sequel. The game used to end with a "to be continued" screen which I think was removed in later versions. If you want to have a blast from the past, definitely pick it up for 2,49 when it's on sale. Even if you don't like it, you won't miss the money. But you might end up enjoying a good story.

Advent Rising the Halo Killer, the Star Wars Killer, turns out it didn't kill either, poor management and not knowing who your fanbase are killed them and Advent Rising is just another copy of a copy. The story is nothing great and nothing we haven't seen a million times before. It does the minimum to function and has it's moments, but it's definitely overhyped in the reviews. Visually it mostly takes from Halo, but there's definitely some Star Wars prequel vibes in there as well. Now the most important part, the gameplay. It's pretty much Halo at home mixed with Jedi Outcast at home a little Max Payne at home and some little RPG elements. You can play it in first-person and it's kinda like a yanky Halo, vehicles also drive like they do in Halo. Playing in third-person gives you auto-aim but it's the better way to play most of the time + the force powers only work in third-person. When you use weapons, you gain levels for the used weapon which makes them more accurate and add one new firemode for each weapon (same goes for force powers), you can even level up your jumping/max payne dodge jump. The force powers are pretty much what you expect from Star Wars, telekenesis, force- push and grab, shields, slowing down time, boost, projectiles and so on. Usually you forget about your old powers once you get a new one (except for boss fights). TL;DR: A mix of things that have proven succesful in a yanky port you wish Nighdive would get a hand on to turn into something actually good. Worth a playthrough, but forgettable is the perfect word to describe it. Time to complete: 9 hours

So, here's the thing-- this game is a sweet sweet hit of nostalgia... if you can get it to run properly. Thankfully, I found some things to help it run smoother on modern platforms. If you follow these steps, you should be able to play it without any crash issues. Step 1: Install the game from Steam. Step 2: Navigate to Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/advent rising/System and locate the file titled Advent.exe. Right click on this file and select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and tell it "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Step 3: Navigate to Program Files (x86)\Steam. Find the file titled "Steam.dll". COPY this file (DO NOT CUT IT, ONLY USE COPY). Step 4. Navigate back to Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/advent rising/System and paste the Steam.dll file here. The game should run properly after this. Hope this helps!
