Dec. 2025
For my 100th review, I want to talk about my favourite game of all time: Ancestors: A Humankind Odyssey. Not only is this the only game I know that uses the prehistoric era as its setting, but it also offers an extreme level of immersion unlike anything I have ever felt before. This is thanks to a game design focused entirely on making you understand our ancestors' point of view during their million-year journey toward humanity. This journey isn't a "classic" gaming experience; instead, it emphasizes learning things for the first time, just as our ancestors did. The game purposefully offers almost no tutorials, which motivates you to act out of pure curiosity, leading to numerous "Aha!" moments. These moments act as rewarded milestones, allowing you to leap forward in time and progress toward the end of the game. While there are main missions, they mostly serve to ensure you don’t get stuck. For a single-player gamer like me, who loves completing main and side objectives, this fits perfectly. I do have one criticism, however: The milestones that require you to watch fights between different animals are too many of these, and it’s not always clear why this knowledge is vital for evolution. Plus, it’s largely luck-based whether these animals even meet. Fortunately, you don’t need to achieve all of them to progress. Beyond the mechanics of knowledge, exploration is key to the immersion too. You start in a dense jungle where the trees provide safety, giving you room to learn the basics. As you venture further, those trees appear less and less, forcing you to expand your horizons and eventually adapt to life on two legs. Exploring with AI tribe members also works flawlessly. They follow you easily across the ground and through the trees, and you can even give them orders to gather or craft, which is incredibly helpful for group resource farming. Speaking of the characters (where everyone is playable) I can honestly say these prehistoric humans are the most relatable characters I have ever encountered. When they fear the unknown, I am scared too, because I don't know if we will survive on the way there and on the way back. When they celebrate killing a predator, I feel that joy with them, especially after being forced to flee so many times before. I truly began to understand their place in the world. While it's a survival game, it isn't about building a base to someday return to modern civilization. You are the most modern civilization there, sleeping in the open air, constantly exposed to predators. Supported by a great soundtrack, this type of immersion is really on a maximum level. How can I best sum up this game? Imagine like sitting at a campfire with your oldest ancestors while they tell you their life story in such vivid detail that you could feel exactly what they experienced, as if you were literally there. That is Ancestors for me. It was the most awesome journey I’ve ever had in gaming. If you love immersive games, are interested in historical or scientific settings, and are open to gameplay that doesn't take you by the hand, I cannot recommend this game enough.

As someone who’s spent countless hours exploring the roots of humanity in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, I can say without hesitation: this game is an absolute gem — a bold, intelligent, and emotionally rewarding journey that deserves far more recognition than it gets. What Ancestors does so brilliantly is challenge everything you think you know about survival games. It drops you into prehistoric Africa, not with a tutorial or hand-holding mechanics, but with instinct, curiosity, and the raw, unfiltered experience of evolving as a species. It doesn’t just simulate evolution — it feels like evolution. Every discovery, every mistake, every leap through generations feels earned. And that sense of earned progress is deeply satisfying. The world is lush, dangerous, and alive. From dense jungles to sun-scorched savannas, the landscapes are breathtaking and brimming with detail. The sound design — whether it's the chirping of insects, the calls of predators, or the heartbeat of your primate clan — pulls you right into the moment. Combine that with the hauntingly beautiful music, and you have an atmosphere that’s deeply immersive. What I love most is how the game respects your intelligence. It doesn’t tell you how to evolve — it invites you to explore, to think, to experiment. You learn by doing, just like our ancestors did. When you figure something out — like how to use tools, how to intimidate predators, or how to care for your clan — the reward isn’t just mechanical progress. It’s a real, almost primal sense of achievement. I’ve lost track of how many hours I’ve put into this game, and every playthrough still feels fresh. The emergent storytelling — the triumphs, the tragedies, the near-death escapes, and the victories over nature — creates a narrative that’s yours. No two journeys are alike, and that’s part of what makes Ancestors so special. If you’re looking for a game that dares to be different — that pushes you to think, to feel, and to grow — then Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an unforgettable experience. It's not just a game — it's a meditation on survival, on learning, and on what it means to be human. And for those willing to embrace its challenge, the rewards are profound. I genuinely can’t recommend it enough.
