Going to give this a thumbs-up because it does a decent job as far as it goes, and it's obvious that efforts have been put into making it fun to play, but.. Be aware that it's mostly-scripted, mostly hand-holding, and kind of the equivalent of a walking sim but with typing instead of walking. You do have to type the right commands to get the results, but you're not really required to acquire a mastery of realistic tools and attack strategies or anything like that. Recommend playing the demo before you buy - if you're looking for a sandboxy hacking sim you might want to look elsewhere.
I gave this a positive review because it is a good game, BUT!!!!!!! There are bugs and things that are irratating and need to be addressed. What I like about it 1. Hot keys, I love Hot keys and the game implements them 2. Auto fil, for when your mind and fingers don't connect and you need typing fast. 3. I have done the Novice Hacker and I love that you have clues to help you, but they don't hold your hand. You still have to use your own investigating and problem solving skills. What I don't like 1. You can't delete saves 2. I think the data from some previous save leaks into the new 3. Sometimes what you need is not there. For example, when I was doing the trial run with the roof top party, I could not get into the DJs music to delete it. 4. There is a morality gauge which I like, but I don't know if it actually works. I just did the David Wilson gig and honestly the guy seemed like a good guy and didn't deserve to be pranked, but you couldn't not do the job. All in all, I got this game on a DEEP discount and I am glad I didn't pay full price for it and would encourage others to do the same until the fix the bugs.
perfect for beginners. I would not say it teaches exact codes or mechanisms but it teaches one how the principles of cyber security work, and gives you firsthand feeling of using its tools. So if you want to start cyber security, then you should definitely play this game till the end.
