Game is fun and content seems about right for the price, but it is buggy/unstable to the point of frustration. After an hour or so playing smoothly, now anytime randomly while playing during the card forge mechanic, maybe an hour, maybe 2 minutes, the game crashes. Restarting the game may or may not be stable. Rebooting the entire system changes nothing. Once a lot of stability fixes are done it will be worth it, but not now. **Update** Played for a few hours with no crashes, so happy to change my review. Strong runs are very luck based, but when you get a good combo going, it's a ton of fun to see.

In Broad Strokes: A Deck Building Roguelike that knows its audience Reviews aren't normally my shtick so pardon me if I don't go to the effort of adding a bunch of overly descriptive fluff. I just cleared Difficulty 15 with all three characters and wanted to take the time to leave an overwhelmingly positive review. I purchased this at the recommendation of a friend that knows what kinds of games I like and it ended up being the highlight of my month. If you're into the roguelike genre, this is a worthwhile pick up. It took me about 2 weeks of on and off evening gameplay after work to effectively 100% the game. I can only think of one negative that's worth mentioning - content and it really isn't all that negative - it just isn't good yet . Roguelikes are my jam. I've got several thousand hours in the genre at this point in my life and I'm happy to give more of said life to the games that deserve it - and this one certainly deserves it. However, the content just isn't there yet. The devs still seem to be paying attention to it and I'll definitely be doing a playthrough on the 4th character once it comes out, but beyond that we'll have to wait and see. Overall Rating - 9.5/10 Buy this if you're looking for an engaging but not mentally taxing roguelike to play after work Do not buy this if you're looking for your next grueling climb to the top armed with only a spreadsheet and your choice of energy drink, you'll be vastly overequipped.

Arcane Trigger is a roguelike shooter that distinguishes itself not through frantic gunplay, but through the deliberate act of crafting the bullets you fire. Developed by MiniWhale and published by MiniWhale and Anotherindie, the game embraces a design philosophy rooted in preparation and experimentation. Instead of relying on randomized weapon drops or traditional firearms, players assemble their ammunition before combat, shaping the outcome of each fight long before the first enemy appears. This shift in emphasis gives Arcane Trigger a strategic personality, making every run feel like a customizable build rather than a reactionary scramble for upgrades. It rewards curiosity, system mastery, and long-term planning—traits that place it closer to a deck-builder than a conventional action shooter. The structure of each run unfolds in waves, with magical enemies spilling out of rifts that threaten the world. Players must survive encounters, collect resources, fuse bullets, unlock stronger variants, and reorganize their magazine to create meaningful synergies. With more than two hundred unique bullet types and a huge pool of seals, modifiers, and upgrades, the possible configurations feel almost overwhelming at first. But the game wisely lets players grow into its systems, revealing how elemental effects combine, how buffs and debuffs stack, and how different attack patterns behave in live combat. Even small adjustments to a build can dramatically alter a run’s rhythm, making experimentation feel rewarding rather than punishing. Progression continues across playthroughs in the form of runes, characters, and unlockable magic carpets, providing a sense of long-term achievement beyond the cycle of life and death. Combat itself plays out like an action-shooter arena, but behind the flashy effects and colorful destruction sits the careful craftsmanship of the player’s loadout. Because every bullet has intentional behaviors—piercing, bouncing, detonating, chaining, spreading—survival depends on understanding how your build interacts with enemy formations. This makes positioning, spacing, and timing just as important as firepower. The result is combat that feels dynamic and expressive, where a well-planned magazine can dismantle overwhelming swarms in seconds. And when a build fails, it rarely feels unfair; instead, it sparks curiosity about what could be adjusted, combined, or upgraded next time. That constant feedback loop is what gives Arcane Trigger its staying power. Aesthetically, the game leans into stylized pixel art enhanced by vibrant spell effects and detailed animations. It has the energy of a magical fireworks display, with bullets coloring the battlefield in swirling patterns and explosive bursts. The visual clarity is particularly impressive given how much information travels across the screen at once. Interface design supports the crafting focus, presenting menus, fusion systems, and inventory layouts cleanly enough that players can experiment without feeling overwhelmed. The soundtrack keeps the action moving without overpowering the thoughtful preparation aspect, striking a tonal balance between intensity and contemplation. However, Arcane Trigger’s strengths also shape its limitations. Because the heart of the experience is the crafting system, players looking for a more traditional roguelike shooter—one defined by reflex-based dodging or spontaneous weapon looting—may find the pacing slower or more cerebral than expected. The learning curve can also feel steep early on, especially for those unfamiliar with synergy-driven progression. Certain bullet combinations clearly outperform others, and balancing updates will likely be needed to ensure long-term variety. The game also focuses more on mechanical expression than storytelling or world-building, meaning narrative-driven players may not find much to anchor themselves emotionally. Despite those caveats, Arcane Trigger succeeds in offering something distinct within a crowded genre. It doesn’t simply remix roguelike fundamentals—it redefines the relationship between preparation and execution. It encourages players to treat combat as the payoff to a carefully constructed plan rather than the starting point of improvisation. That identity gives it a niche all its own, one built on creativity, iteration, and strategic imagination. Each failed run becomes an invitation to tinker, rethink, and rebuild, and each successful one feels earned not just through reflexes, but through craft. For players who love experimenting with builds, discovering system interactions, and shaping their own playstyle through layered mechanics, Arcane Trigger offers hours of engaging depth. It’s a thoughtful, visually striking, and cleverly structured roguelike that values intellect as much as agility. And while it may not appeal equally to every action fan, it stands out as a confident, inventive entry in the genre—one that transforms bullets from consumable ammunition into the core of its identity. Very fun, but if you're not familiar with roguelike deckbuilders, you're going to get lost. Like with many translated indie games, it has text elements that lost something in translation making the effects cumbersome to learn. Boost, Power, Energy, High Energy, are all separate mechanics. To elaborate, Energy is basically money to buy new bullets (bullets are cards), whereas High Energy boosts Lightning damage. Boost is... well you get the point. If you can get past all that, the gameplay is unique and it has just enough luck protection to make drafting a winning build feel strategic rather than random. And its just plain fun to click "shoot" and watch a cascade of numbers as your bullets destroy everything. I play a lot of indie roguelikes and deckbuilders, and I can say that barring learning curve, this game is a solid experience and is well worth full price.
