So I found myself swinging between two extremes playing this game. One extreme was I couldn't really understand some of the design decisions being made, especially in regards to the combat. There are so many moments where the game sets the mood and tone for a boss fight really effectively, so to so easily one shot everything was really confusing. Bosses have unique BGM, and it would've been cool if I had time to hear any of them! It's beyond the game being too easy; one shotting every single enemy you come across in the game completely neuters any attempt the game makes at creating a sense of urgency or tension. Scary weird boss on a ship? May as well be one of the countless other AI mobs you spend the game mowing down; there is literally no difference in how their respective battles play out. At least give the bosses enough health to endure a few attacks. There are a few other odd choices, like title screens and opening (?) credits being placed randomly throughout the game for no reason I could figure out, poor grammar/translation and how oddly fleshed out the combat system was for being something that trivialized the combat if you interacted with it even slightly. On the other extreme, I can't really deny that playing this game was extremely enjoyable. It was so enjoyable the negatives weren't things I didn't enjoy; it was more that they were aspects that would've made this game a 10/10 if they were polished/properly implemented. It's just that good. Whatever crazy witchcraft truly great games do to draw you in and make you feel invested in the worlds they conjure? This game has that. And it has that pretty consistently throughout the entire runtime, in multiple aspects. The visuals, the animation, the world, the characters and soundtrack were all so good, and you can really feel the heart that's been poured into every inch of this game. It can be genuinely hilarious, meditative, dark, heartwarming, and swing between these all of these moods without warning. The ending wasn't amazing, but at that point I didn't care all too much. Very much a game about the journey. And being broke.

(I have not yet finished the game at the point of this review) The game really oozes out style with its great animations. It's just such a great game artistically. I personally find the game to be really enjoyable narratively as well. The story telling really exceeds when it's doing one of its many comedic bits. The overall world lore is pretty interesting too and leaves a lot of room to work with for future content. The dynamic between bot and akane is really entertaining to me. The biggest drawback is the combat. It was fine for maybe the first hour at most and then I just started to one shot everything with a single skill. It's such a shame because there's a bunch of different systems designed for combat/gearing up for combat and I just don't feel like I need to interact with them. If/When combat gets a rebalance/rework I will recommend this game to so many people. Right now, I still enjoy the game for what it is and what it's offering, but just temper your expectations if you're looking at it expecting any form of satisfying combat balance and progression.

Its a fine product but it feels rather unfinished and incomplete. Wish there was more to the game and the story. If you're in for silly animations and a lil bit of lore you can get it, but i cant completely recommend it if you're expecting anything else.

Based on 20 hours spent in the demo (combing over it for all secrets, events, etc. over two playthroughs) pre-release: Endlessly charming, with an unusually lively world and a strong sense of personality. Akane is distinct, an original creation, and most of my interest in this game is driven by my desire to see what she gets up to, both because she's fun and because the animations of the things she gets up to are gorgeous and extremely detailed. On the gameplay side, Artis is messy, and not very deep (at least as far as I've gotten). If you're the type of player that likes to dig into stats and needs to understand all underlying systems to feel comfortable, Artis is gonna let you down. But that honestly doesn't matter. This game is about the V I B E S. It's about finding secrets, cutscenes, animations, character interactions, locations...goofing off, mostly. It's about Akane goofing off. And you're Akane. I'll update this review as I get past demo content, but based on experience thus far, a definite recommend.
