RPGmaker is likely my favorite platform for game development and this title is one of the perfect explanations as to why. Ideally I believe that RPGmaker games should reach for timelessness, and Artis Impact does so fairly perfectly. This game could have released yesterday, or could have released thirty years ago and this wouldn't matter at all. The art direction is still lovely, the story is still whimsical and adventurous and cool and most aspects of this game are so freaking cute, especially Akane and her beautiful uniform + weaponry ~ I had lots of fun gallivanting around as part of her continent-trotting, and the soundtrack was cool + cute as well. This sort of literary adventure in RPGmaker binds all those enchanting books I've read as a child together with all the natural exploration of a good childhood & every classic pc and ps1 rpg/metroid memory a kid could have is brought freshly and newly to the mind of your adult self, leaving me in renewed awe, wonder and mystery for the world. I only wish I could keep playing after the final mission ends without the requirement of beginning the entire game again, and mayhaps post a soundtrack listing on Steam + add Steam overlay on top of game pls. These are my only rooms for improvement at present. I had an incredible time with this artistic work & would love to continue if a future update would have me someday ^-^ 10/10 rating for the warm fuzzy feeling the game herein oft gave me <3 Keep making games if you can pls

Funny, Sad, Intense, Calm, Inspirational, and Disappointing Artis Impact TLDR : if you like slice-of-life and pixel art animation and don’t mind poor gameplay – this game is for you. However, I have so many feelings about this game, I can barely fit them in an adequately sized review, so here we are. A game made by a solo-dev is always interesting to analyze because the dev’s skills and personality directly shape how the game feels. The larger the team, the less this effect is pronounced. The creator of Artis Impact is an animator, and you can tell: both in good and bad ways. On the positive side, the animation is stunning. I don’t know much about animation, I am not sure how it’s achieved, but the game can show more dynamic with a handful black-and-white pixels than some 3d games do. And the pixel art itself is very decent. The OST is amazing. Every track makes you feel like a part of an adventure and fits any scene pretty well. On the other hand, everything beyond the visuals is unorthodox. Not always in a bad way, but some things could be done better. The most frustrating one is gameplay. The combat system is far too easy to break in either direction: with small changes to your build, you can go from nearly useless to overwhelmingly overpowered. Most abilities actually do nothing special. Yes, some of them are solo-target, some of them target several enemies but in terms of actual combat they just provide different animations of you one-shotting the monsters in 90% encounters. And again, they are animated very well, but the game basically has almost no middle ground between effortlessly passing through the level and struggling to survive the bossfight. The dev clearly tried to balance things with stat-boosting consumables and activities. The most weird thing here is the “try again” mechanic, which lets you lose some money to immediately retry a fight after defeat. However, it does not reset the enemies. You just respawn with full HP, meaning you can die in every combat up to 3 times before losing it, which feels more like a cheat than a second chance. The story is a bit weird as many reviews pointed out. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing, I would rather say that the story is niche. Artis Impact is a slice-of-life game but this life happens in a pretty dramatic post-apocalyptic world with hordes of AI-driven robots that nearly wiped out humanity. The game focuses mostly on daily routines and small things in life, and yet occasionally it teases some larger narrative development – and does this so well that you become genuinely invested. And then Artis Impact just… leaves you there without a real closure at a very random point of the story. It almost feels like the game is missing an entire chapter, no, even a half of the story. It begins nowhere and ends nowhere. Which is not a bad thing for a slice of life but again, all this tension distracts you from the fact that it is a slice-of-life. As someone pointed out in steam reviews: [quote=Giulianosse]Artis Impact cares more about teaching you how to use an automated lemonade stand than about fleshing out the central premise behind the events that drive its narrative I couldn’t have said it better. But if you put aside this frustration for a moment you realize that Artis Impact is a very cozy little adventure – one you wish lasted longer. Moreover, it doesn’t feel like just your adventure. I noticed at some point, mostly in later parts of the game, that some backgrounds appear to use edited or traced real life photos. There are quite a few of them toward the ending, which makes me think the developer created them personally. The result is a curious sensation that you’re stepping into someone else’s memories rather than simply playing through a fictional world. It reminds me of another media – a niche slice-of-life manga Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. It also is about apocalypse, AIs, robots, and vanishing humanity. And it also ignores all interesting and weird things in its world that would be core points in a normal story. But instead of being boring it feels very natural and personal. If you are hungry for more Artis Impact i can recommend it. It has different pacing and is less humorous but if you liked the calm parts of Artis Impact you will like this manga too. I wonder if the dev drew any inspiration from it. I could not find any information on that but I would be glad if it was confirmed.

What a strange game this is. For starters, it's not a good RPG. The combat is completely unbalanced, progression is needlessly grindy and obtuse and the story loses direction at the halfway point, leading to a sudden non-ending that feels like an opening cutscene rather than a resolution. But those issues, to me, were just barely overshadowed by the sheer charm and coziness Artis Impact has to offer. The game is full of small, usually pointless bits of content whose only purpose is to allow you to spend a bit more time in the game's world. It feels antithetical to the very concept of a game, where every action the player takes should get them closer to some goal or objective. Not here. It's pointless but in a very fun way. Truly the Seinfeld of video games.

So I found myself swinging between two extremes playing this game. One extreme was I couldn't really understand some of the design decisions being made, especially in regards to the combat. There are so many moments where the game sets the mood and tone for a boss fight really effectively, so to so easily one shot everything was really confusing. Bosses have unique BGM, and it would've been cool if I had time to hear any of them! It's beyond the game being too easy; one shotting every single enemy you come across in the game completely neuters any attempt the game makes at creating a sense of urgency or tension. Scary weird boss on a ship? May as well be one of the countless other AI mobs you spend the game mowing down; there is literally no difference in how their respective battles play out. At least give the bosses enough health to endure a few attacks. There are a few other odd choices, like title screens and opening (?) credits being placed randomly throughout the game for no reason I could figure out, poor grammar/translation and how oddly fleshed out the combat system was for being something that trivialized the combat if you interacted with it even slightly. On the other extreme, I can't really deny that playing this game was extremely enjoyable. It was so enjoyable the negatives weren't things I didn't enjoy; it was more that they were aspects that would've made this game a 10/10 if they were polished/properly implemented. It's just that good. Whatever crazy witchcraft truly great games do to draw you in and make you feel invested in the worlds they conjure? This game has that. And it has that pretty consistently throughout the entire runtime, in multiple aspects. The visuals, the animation, the world, the characters and soundtrack were all so good, and you can really feel the heart that's been poured into every inch of this game. It can be genuinely hilarious, meditative, dark, heartwarming, and swing between these all of these moods without warning. The ending wasn't amazing, but at that point I didn't care all too much. Very much a game about the journey. And being broke.
