It's okay. It pales in comparison to Battle for Bikini Bottom. It's gameplay is good and collecting can be fun. The challenges really keep you going. The locations are fun to explore. Some of the movement feels wonky, especially with the glide ability. Enemy hitboxes will remain after the animation ends, so you end up getting hit when you think it's safe to dive in. It doesn't feel rewarding to explore as the maps are designed with tons of empty nooks. If you like BfBB, then try it out. Just don't buy it at full price. It really isn't worth it.
after 100%ing this game i have a lot of opinions about it, mostly positive. the game feels great with fun level design. while the movement and combat feels wonderful the fun components arent given to you immediately making early levels feel a bit sloggish. but as you gain abilities the movement gets FUN. easy game to 100% just try to get some of the awards going through levels for the first time as some of the awards are a little tedious to get after the fact (not hard to get just a mild inconvenience). IF I HAVE TO HEAR SPONGEBOB SAY "a lil dab will do ya" ONE MORE TIME, MY HEAD IS GETTING BLOWN SMOOTH OFF 8/10
A faithful sequel to Battle For Bikini Bottom, occupying a space that feels almost like a reboot due to how much of its 'DNA' and makes it its own. I will say though, having grown up with BFBB and just recently playing through the remaster before this, I much prefer Cosmic Shake. It is multiverse slop done right and better than Marvel, the DCU or Rick and Morty. A loving tribute to everything Spongebob, as well as a stunningly impressive game performance despite running on the unreal engine. Perhaps, that is the most impressive part of this game's development. For one of the rare occasions in history, a developer made an unreal game with stylized, show-faithful graphics and it actually runs smooth due to the genuine effort of a real optimization. The game is very faithfully built on the same engine of the BFBB remake, but it also feels a bit too much like an actual PS2 game of that period. All in all, its a AA game but its more fun than most AAA ever will be. An actual treat for children, adults who grew up with the show and want to relive the magic, or introduce their kids to the same nautical nonsense. That being said, the gameplay loop can at times be frustrating and at worst, can be outright infuriating when some of the mechanics or controls work against the player. Despite that, the game is truly an upgrade in every single way. The level design is a lot more linear, for the better, as well as far more fair in its placement of checkpoints. The original Spongebob games had many limitations for memory due to the console hardware at the time and thus, the biggest enemy in that game was the camera and the long distance between checkpoints. For the most part, this game is not just a love letter to the old games, but proof that the IP and spirit of the game is in the right hands. Every complaint I had for the last game is completely rectified here. The painful slide races are far more forgiving, far more fun and still have just enough challenge to build tension, the combat is a lot better and virtually, all the minigames and mechanics are more responsive. Unlike most games, the fixed difficulty of Spongebob forces you to actually learn and master these mechanics, which doesn't feel like as much as a chore as you may think. As a result, the game feels varied and genuinely enthusiastic in every level. Another great thing is that, despite it being far less punishing than the last game, it also is twice as rewarding for going off the beaten-path and taking on some challenging obstacles. Combine this with the costume system, the replayability is actually very high and a treat for collect-a-thon-fans. The boss fights are not for wimps either and even with generous checkpoints, are a challenge that remind me a lot also of the Batman Arkham game fights. Oh, and the music? They went all out again. I especially love that Patrick is a Paimon-esque/Puck from Berserk/Link's Navi/pods from Nier Automata tribute that actually is a good excuse to have Patrick providing constant commentary and hints. Also, the fact that Patrick actively helps the player in several ways is so convenient and true to character. All of these interactions are funny, endearing and/or wholesome. Some of the jokes or memes may be mere smirks for some jaded adults, but the game is so faithful to both new and old Spongebob, it is entirely impossible to not be taken in by the joyous nostalgia of it all, while still experiencing something new. It definitely leans more toward new-spongebob than old, which makes sense, but it actually benefits the silliness factor of the game in all the right ways. Also, fan favourite THQ's THE PRAWN has a return. The devs really know their audience. One of the level scenarios literally has the camera as your main obstacle, another level is happy to poke at old conventions of the last game and Rock Bottom, Kelp Forest, etc, all return as well as some elements from BFBB's "Spongebob's Dream", the bane of many of the original players, myself included, but all in a new, fresh, shiny package that is actually fun. It was a relief knowing this game would be actually enjoyable consistently. I never got stuck too long on any part and every level knows when it has outworn its welcome. The pacing for the game is perfect. It doesn't try too hard to be too epic, but the music, presentation and everything else, as well as the visual fidelity and artistic vision, simply carries it above and beyond all expectations. And fans who were disappointed that certain elements of BFBB remaster didn't restore certain cut content, restashore, this game makes up for that half-fulfilled promise in a unique way. So really, what else is there to say? Cosmic Shake is fun, actually really funny with most of the jokes and trademark Spongebob humour hitting exactly right, complete with all the essentials of classic and new Spongebob, and most importantly, it is an unreal engine game that doesn't have frame issues or performance issues at all. No crashes, no jitters, no hitching, graphics automatically on epic. Whatever the boys at THQ are doing, let's all hope they keep doing it. Oogh, the hook grapples though still give me PTSD from the Sandy parts of Downtown Bikini Bottom tho.
Grab the game while its on sale that's the only time its worth to buy i did enjoy the game its a great game after battle for bikini bottom to be honest i was expecting more in the game i was able to beat it within 9 hours but i kinda wish the game went for 30 hrs when i got to the end i was disapointed they didn't add more or that there wasn't more to the game like new game + which would have tied the ending up great overall was really fun and nostalgic
