This game TOOK OVER my life for an entire couple of months. If you play the demo or only the first two or three hours of it, you might be mistaken into believing this is just a generic 2D action RPG that sort of captures the aesthetics of 90s PC games, especially some PC98 or X68K or FM Towns titles. It is not. It is one of the most satisfying journeys you will experience in gaming. And it is a labour of love, 15 years in the making. Also, it shows that something fantastic can be made out of generic assets and just pure passion - and then just polished with help by the community. The Shigatake art is gorgeous, of course. The music is insanely diverse and shouldn't make sense but it does. The writing is weird but endearing. Karon is the GOAT. Shiro is insane. Nagumo is the man. All the characters, really, have something about them. Buy it. Play it. It will ruin your life, it will frustrate you, it will troll you into believing it's finally over to hit you with 20 more hours of game, and it will give you some of the best suffering you have ever experienced in a 2D game. Also, Kuro is best girl.

Incredible game. Good gameplay, interesting story, good music, nice art and so much content in it. After 120 hours I haven't done everything yet. I spent all that playtime on the steamdeck, on which the game ran really well. Quality through and through and given the amount of content, the price is an incredible deal.

A labor of love made over 14 years, and it shows. Absolutely fantastic game. If you like action RPGs at all, or if you've ever found yourself thinking "What if Ys III: Wanderers from Ys was good?", this game is for you. The gameplay is fun, fast, and there's a huge variety of different character builds and ways you can approach combat. The game is constantly throwing new mechanics at you, and it continually evolves over the course of nearly 100 hours; it never feels like you're just doing the exact same thing that you were in the previous chapter. The only caveat here is that it takes a little bit to get going; your abilities right at the beginning of the game feel a little stiff and slow, but just be patient and give it a chapter or two. The story is also absolutely wild. It starts off feeling like a pretty normal fantasy JRPG, but it doesn't take too long for it to begin pulling out crazy plot twists, and it keeps going all the way through the post-game. It takes every JRPG trope you love and cranks them all up to 11. This game knows what you expect from a JRPG, and it's going to both deliver that and give you some really good surprises. I will again give one caveat here, that there's a point in the game around chapter 4 where the writer must have just been really horny because there's some pretty offputting sexual humor; but after you get past that, the rest of the game is a blast. I can't forget to mention that the soundtrack is filled with banger after banger, too. One of the most interesting things here is that it's almost entirely music sourced from royalty-free archives on the internet; you may have even heard some of it before. Even though the dev didn't make it himself, he did a great job at finding appropriate tracks and incorporating them into the game. I don't know what else to say other than this game is a testament to the power of human creativity. I hope I can make something this good someday.

Astlibra Played the game awhile back — 15 year Solo dev, passion project, work of art, top-tier in its class. If I had a list and ASTLIBRA was on it, you would also find: DUST an elysian tale, SOTN, afterimage, Lunacid, valdis story, neir automata, the vagrant, on that same list for various reasons. Pros: Music, story, pacing, gameplay all top tier. Cons: Nothing memorable enough to mention. Recommendation: watch 5 minutes, if you appreciate the genre/music/art direction or if you recognized the other listed games, you will likely enjoy Astlibra.
