I discovered Astlibra Revision completely by random during a sale. The overwhelmingly positive reviews drew me in, and I am so glad I took the chance. This is easily one of the best games I have played in a while. The gameplay and combat is incredibly fun and the story kept me hooked from start to finish. The only downside for me was the specific style of Japanese humor and "perviness" in certain chapters. There are definitely some awkward moments that felt jarring compared to how great the rest of the game is.
Honestly, don't let the weird title or the mix-and-match art style throw you off. ASTLIBRA Revision is one of those rare games that reminds you why you started playing RPGs in the first place. It’s a side-scrolling action game that feels like a massive labor of love, mostly because it literally took the dev 14 years to make. The combat is super fluid and flashy. You’re constantly getting new loot, mastering gear, and filling out this massive skill tree. Every time I thought I had seen everything the game had to offer, it threw a new mechanic or the story just surprises you.. yet again. I would actually recommend starting on a harder difficulty (free achivemnt) to really appreciate the mechanics. It's easy to pick up but very hard to master, and it's one of those rare games that makes me want to go for 100% completion. 25/06/2026 I just finished the DLC and my positive impressions still stand, even though it’s a bit of a different experience compared to the main game. It leans heavily into being a classic dungeon crawler, shifting the focus away from traditional exploration and more toward clearing floors, grinding, and constantly upgrading your build. There is still a decent amount of story thrown into the mix that adds some nice lore and context to the world, so it never feels like mindless hacking and slashing. Overall, it’s a really fun and solid package that delivers exactly what you want if you just can't get enough of ASTLIBRA's combat and lore.
This game TOOK OVER my life for an entire couple of months. If you play the demo or only the first two or three hours of it, you might be mistaken into believing this is just a generic 2D action RPG that sort of captures the aesthetics of 90s PC games, especially some PC98 or X68K or FM Towns titles. It is not. It is one of the most satisfying journeys you will experience in gaming. And it is a labour of love, 15 years in the making. Also, it shows that something fantastic can be made out of generic assets and just pure passion - and then just polished with help by the community. The Shigatake art is gorgeous, of course. The music is insanely diverse and shouldn't make sense but it does. The writing is weird but endearing. Karon is the GOAT. Shiro is insane. Nagumo is the man. All the characters, really, have something about them. Buy it. Play it. It will ruin your life, it will frustrate you, it will troll you into believing it's finally over to hit you with 20 more hours of game, and it will give you some of the best suffering you have ever experienced in a 2D game. Also, Kuro is best girl.
I beat this a while back and it pops in my head from time to time, so I decided to write a review. The most important thing I can say is this: I am not normally a 'play the demo' kind of guy, but if you are on the fence or have *ANY* interest in this game whatsoever, play the demo. It plays just like the purchased game, you save transfers over, and it's the first chapter in it's entirety (around 2 hours of gameplay). It will give you a better idea of the art, story and gameplay and whether or not this game is for you than any review or description can. All that said... this is a pretty incredible labor of love. If it wasn't for some guy raving about this game somewhere, it would have completely passed me by. I am thankful that random guy made this game sound so appealing for me to toss on my wish list. This is one of the best 2d action rpg's ever made. Great gameplay, great soundtrack, a cool art style that occasionally clashes with itself in a way that enhances the overall style, and a story that is pretty decent, much better than the average indie rpg. If you consider yourself a gamer, you owe it to yourself to at least check out the demo for this masterpiece. I pray KEIZO makes another game after this, but with how many years they put into this one, I won't be surprised if they decided to call it one and done. Still, I'm thankful this work exists at the very least. It's a toss up on any given day which I'd pick between Fortune Summoners and Astlibra as my favorite indie 2d arpg (although they play completely differently).
