April 2025
It's hard to rate this as fully positive, so this is going to be a mixed review. First off, I really liked the story of Firis and her sister Liane going on a journey together, as well as seeing Sophie and Plachta again. I'll always be happy to see Sophie anywhere. The open world was decent. It's nice that the developers experimented with that. It's a nice change from the rest of the series. I haven't completed every map yet, because I only beat the license exam and decided to call it a day. I'll come back to complete everything later. I love the opening song so much. There was never a time where I skipped it. I even let it play multiple times before actually getting out of the title screen. This alone made playing Firis worth it. Now for the negatives, which there will be a bit more of than positives. No fast travel until you get to the endgame and complete a quest chain to get the ability to teleport to places. This makes it really annoying to have to run back to specific locations. That's the worst part out of the way. (This section was originally me complaining about how the alchemy was done. Then I changed my mind after starting a second playthrough) And another thing that really bothered me, is how small the inventory is. We're supposed to be gathering a ton of materials, just like we did in previous Atelier titles, and we can't have a storage box with enough space to fit lots of stuff? I had to discard 40+ items many times when returning to the atelier. Maybe you can craft a storage box that fits way more? I never did that, so I could do better and craft one in my next playthrough. I found it difficult to get high quality items as well, since apparently you need to make the same item multiple times to level it up? I don't know why Firis is the only one they did this with. I personally didn't care about the characters as much as I did in Atelier Sophie. Other than Firis herself, Liane, Plachta, and Sophie. It was also nice to see Oskar again. Oh, and Ilmeria wasn't bad. I liked her more than the rest of the new characters. English dub is very lacking in here, as this is the last dubbed Atelier that was made. Most of the scenes, other than the story important scenes, aren't going to be voiced. It makes me wonder if that's why I didn't care about the characters that much. This is definitely lower on the list of cons for me, but it's worth pointing out if you like dubs. If you prefer playing in Japanese, this won't be a problem. I had many moments where I liked Atelier Firis, then I didn't like it. Then I started liking it again. Many mixed feelings. I know that not everybody is going to have a bad time with it, so I'm not recommending against it. In fact, I would definitely recommend picking up Firis, because if you are interested in the Mysterious series, you'll want to get the bundle for sure. That includes Sophie, this one, and the mischievous twins, Lydie and Suelle. All of them are worth it. I haven't played Lydie and Suelle yet, but I have a feeling that I will love it. With all of that being said, you may love Atelier Firis, you may just like it a little bit. So why not give it a try? I'm glad I still gave this a chance, despite how it was for me at times. I will absolutely be back in a few months to play this again, and maybe have a better experience. There are still many endings I haven't done yet, and I got a pretty bad score on the exam. Next time, I will be more prepared. I'm sure the endgame experience won't be as bad for you, if you prepare some good items, and get a good or decent score. Edit: I'm currently playing through the extra content right now, and I do want to say that I'm enjoying it! So I might be updating this review soon, to add more positives. I'll wait until I'm finished and then come back later! I feel like I should have actually played through the entire game before writing a review.

Atelier Firis is a different approach to the original Mysterious trilogy. It had a time limit, which isn't present in the other games. It didn't focus on a particular mysterious object, but instead what is mysterious is the world in Firis' eyes. It experimented with a larger world than any previous entry. The means of mastering alchemy is odd to say the least. It was extremely ambitious. They took a lot of risks with Firis' design and it failed in a lot of regards in the eyes of the fans. However, I love Atelier Firis. I originally played this game on PS4 and fell in love with the world and Firis as a character. Firis is by far my favorite alchemist in the entire series. The different means of exploring the world just made it feel so unique as an entry. Do I think Atelier Firis is the best game in the franchise? No. But it's a game I keep coming back to for more because of how much there is to do in it and for Firis. For me this is exactly what I want from an Atelier.

It's more Atelier. I'd recommend it to fans of the series, sure. If you're a newcomer, please steer far away from this entry and play either Sophie, Lydie/Suelle, Ayesha, Escha/Logy, or Meruru, and then a couple more titles in the series, before you even think about diving into this game. It is the messiest/worst game in the series, but the formula still works on its own.

Firis is one of the most controversial Atelier games. And yet when I played it myself, it quickly became my favorite. One thing that I noticed right away, was the vastly improved graphics compared to the previous games. Everything looks so much more detailed and colorful. The world itself is also a huge improvement. I like the wide variety of maps with different climates, as well as there being multiple cities and smaller villages. The standard Atelier formula of one city and small, isolated gathering areas always felt a bit artificial. Firis's world felt more realistic, to the point where I felt immersed in the world as I travel through it. The Atelier series isn't known for deep characters , but Firis's cast is at least a bit better than most others. The characters rely less on a gimmick, feel more grounded, and end up being more relatable. I like that quests are taken in person, rather than from a bulletin board. I'll never forget the time I handed in a special nutrient, and some beautiful flowers instantly grew. Or a chain of quests about a guy that wants to make a statue. Or the old woman who made clothes that can withstand the cold. These small touches and bits of dialogue, turn otherwise generic fetch quests into something memorable. As a result, the world feels so much more lively and real. The music in Atelier games has always been great, and Firis is no exception. Several soundtracks, like the starting town song, battle music, and especially atelier music, were especially memorable. As a result of the improved graphics, map design, characters, and quests, I felt far more immersed in the world of Firis than any other Atelier game. The gameplay is great too. I like that you're given an overarching task, but the game is open-ended about how to achieve it. For the most part, you could go wherever you want, do whatever you want, in whatever order you like. A welcome change of pace from all the linear stories. Exploration is a major theme of this game, and it's reflected in the gameplay by making every location worthwhile to explore. In fact, maps that don't directly contribute to the main objective, are actually some of the best places to explore, as they often contain rare and valuable ingredients that are difficult to find elsewhere. The game encourages you to explore, and no matter where you go, it feels like you made the right choice. The Mysterious series is famous for its tetris alchemy , and IMO, Firis has the best version of the tetris alchemy system. Crafting every item felt like solving a puzzle, and I always feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement when I finally figure out the right materials, and put them in the right locations and order, to get the effects I want. You can strip out 90% of the game, leaving behind just the alchemy, and I would still have a ton of fun doing nothing but create items with Firis's alchemy system. The Atelier series isn't known for its combat system, the main problem being how easy it is to trivialize the game. Firis doesn't exactly solve this issue, but at least manages to tone down the severity. Stat inflation is minimal in this game, and while you can still get very powerful, it takes more work, and even with good gear, later enemies can be formidable. It's quite telling that in many Atelier games, I can break the game so hard that even the hardest difficulty is trivialized, whereas in Firis, I stayed on normal difficulty for the entire first playthrough, and enjoyed a fair and consistent difficulty from start to finish. The more balanced difficulty also means there is value in trying out different party members, and as a result, Firis is the only Atelier game I've replayed. All in all, Firis is easily my favorite and most played Atelier game. This is a reminder that even when a game faces heavy criticism, it can still be worth checking out. There's always a chance you'll be like me, and end up liking the game in every aspect.

this is by far the most comedic anime rpg game i have ever played. unlike the previous titles, Firis as a character is an innocent gullible and a not very bright alchemist. and in her adventure she does meet a lot of characters which lead to events that are comedic due to her character. Pros: -the game is a solid rpg that follows the steps on the atelier spirit. but in this game they divided the game into segments where it seems your goal is become an alchemist and pass the exam with a time limit BUT that is only a tiny portion of the game/story in which the game gives you hints toward your next objective. -the comedic element to this game (for my taste) was good. Cons: -one flaw i found is the early small bag size which limits your exploration because you wouldnt want to explore new areas and miss out on new items due to having full items in your base. later on you could craft bigger shelves/storage to store more items but for me it never seemed enough. althought almost 60 hours in the game and I think iam only midway thru. -another flaw is the equipment, if you equip a character and tell them to leave your party, they take the equipment with them. so you need to remove their equipment then ask them to leave your party so you can use their equipment. overall the game is great, its just I reached the age where games hardly keep me attracted and 60 hours for me is a job well done. who ever did the scripts and specially the voice acting (in japanese) really enjoyed their work.
